  • Inconsistent build quality & significant background noise on all but -10dB cardioid setting. Great for quiet settings or YMMV.
Style: USB Microphone
Highly inconsistent build quality. Extremely sensitive to room/background noise. If you use a Logitech c920 for casual camming and chat where you are more than 12 inches away from the microphone, then don't bother with the Go Mic. You will get better overall sound from the c920s built in stereo mic. The Go Mic does, however, provide excellent sound(better than the c920 and akin to the Meteor and popular Blue mics) with acceptable background noise rejection when on the -10dB cardioid setting and positioned within 6-10 inches from the user. Let me expand on all of the above criticisms. In the past 10 days, I rec'd and returned three different Samson Go Mics. The first and the third ones came in the style of box pictured below which was smaller and had a shelf hanger display tag and did NOT include mini CD/DVD with some sort of "creator" software. Both of these mics suffered from loose swivel ball joints which could not be tightened. The mics would just flop down when in certain positions.unable to support their own weight and even less able to do so with the cable attached. My older laptop, an HP-DV9000 series has a relatively thick rounded at the top, and very slick surfaced LCD screen and both of these mics would just barely clip onto it and would slowly squeeze themselves off it over the course of a few minutes. I did not bother trying to jerry-rig a roughened surface or other solution to this issue because the floppy swivel was enough to warrant their return. Both of these mics provided decent sound quality, but neither did well for my particular usage as far as background noise rejection which I will discuss more later. The second mic I rec'd after returning Go Mic #1 came in a considerably larger, more square box with included CD/DVD bonus software(not used, not linux software) and was the type of box/packaging meant to be stacked rather than displayed on a shelf hanger. I assume that his particular unit must have been from a different production run or factory because its swivel ball joint was nice and tight and firmly held the Go Mic in any position supporting both the mic and the attached cable nicely. The clip opened just a bit wider than the other Go Mics I rec'd and it clamped snugly to my old beast of a laptop and stayed put. Go figure? I was happy at first and ready and expecting to love this mic now that I had one with better fit and construction until I plugged my new Samson sr950 headphones into the monitoring jack on this cute little mic. Snap, crackle, hiss and pop! It was obviously a defective jack or had been improperly connected internally. Both the first and third mics I rec'd/tested gave me clear, latency free sound to my headphones, but this one was a dog, so back to Amazon it goes, click return. Refund or exchange, well third times a charm, right? I was really enjoying and was satisfied with my Samson 950 headphones, so why not give the Go Mic a third and final chance. Great customer service from Amazon as always and I literally had my third Go Mic in my hand 32 hours after requesting the exchange. Third Go Mic arrives in same type of packaging as the first and it has the same weak floppy swivel and inability to stay clamped onto my LCD screen. Very disappointing, I was really excited about this product and wanted to use it everyday and love it. After receiving three mics in a row with some degree of build quality issues I started having serious reservations about this product even if I might be able to find a way to rig solutions to the mic fastening/positioning issues I was having. Not willing to fully give up on it yet, I decided to do some decidedly unscientific(I am a scientist...lol) sound recording tests using audacity to see approximately how much better sound I would be giving up by sticking with the on-board stereo mics of my c920 webcam versus the Go Mic. All non-metered audio reviews are subjective and your perception of my audio would be even more subjective, and I did not save the audio test recordings, nor am I willing to recreate them and edit a full video review/comparison. Such a demo would not be double blind or scientific or repeatable under your conditions anyway. Suffice it to say that my personal bias was in favor of loving the Samson Go Mic's performance over the c920 webcam, but that bias was not sustained under my test/use conditions I am not a podcaster, wannabe broadcaster, singer, musician, or voice over artist. I use a microphone for Skype, Chaturbate, Yahoo voice/video calls, and Google Voice mostly. Most of the time, I am positioned 18 inches to 4 feet away from the microphone/webcam and using a wireless keyboard. The omnidirectional setting on the Go Mic was incredibly sensitive. It picked up not only my voice, my laptop's fan, the airflow through the AC duct10 feet away, but also voices of other people through a mostly closed door, in another room down the hall over 75 feet away! I'm not exaggerating, I know my home's dimensions well. New uses for eavesdropping and using this mic as part of a directional parabolic reflector project popped into my head. I was truly amazed by its sensitivity and ability to allow me to actually hear a conversation at normal speech level from such a distance. If I really wanted or needed such functionality this mic would be a keeper. It would also be a keeper if I wanted a small, cheap, portable mic to do podcasting in controlled and quiet environments on the -10dB cardioid setting where I could always position myself 6-10 inches away from it. With the levels properly adjusted, my voice sounded great on this setting with minimal background noise, but this was not my intended use for this product. On the regular cardioid setting without -10dB attenuation, I was actually quite surprised at how sensitive the Go Mic was from 4-8 feet away. It picked up my voice well and gave a warmer/deeper and more "professional" sound to my voice than the mics on my c920(under normal setup). I was not expecting it to do so well on cardioid setting with me at that far a distance from it, but unfortunately that level of sensitivity came at the price of significant background noise. So, I started tweaking mic position, rigging a makeshift vocal box/shock mount, adjusting levels/EQ, pretty much trying any and everything I could think of to make this mic work for me in my conditions on the regular cardioid setting. At best, I was able to get decent sound when the Go Mic was partially isolated in a makeshift "enclosure/isolator/dampener" that was clearly superior in quality to my c920 as it sat on the top of my screen, but there was still an unacceptable level of background noise, noticeably greater than that of my webcam mic. The c920's stereo mics gave a thinner, not as warn sound as the Go Mic, but reduced background noise to less than half the level present with the Go Mic. It would be a trade off, a compromise and one that I did not think was worth dealing with. I did still want better sound than I had been getting with my webcam, so my first thought was to consider giving in and just getting the Blue Yeti or giving the Audio Technica AT2020 a try and seeing how it would perform with me speaking 3 feet away from it. My personal preference from listening to many different podcasters and online reviews is for the AT2020 over the Yeti, but it is suposedly designed with a tighter cardioid pattern not ideal for my use. There is no denying that the Yeti offers great versatility and control options and very good, if not broadcast quality sound(a matter of tonal preference not quality). Both of those choices would cost me more than 3 times the $32 I spent on the Go MIc. While pondering this possible unnecessary expenditure and packing up Go Mic #3 for return I decided to try remove my webcam from atop my laptop's screen and placed it in the same homemade impromptu "isolator box" that I had just tried with the Go Mic. I hope you all get a good laugh seeing my c920 webcam perched on a foam coffee cup on top of a roll of Costco's finest Kirkland toilet paper in front of a curved fruit tray on its side with a thick terry cloth towel doubled over it and a square cork tile balance over it with a toenail clipper used as a counterweight to keep it there. Hey, I was herbalized, it was what I had on hand, it was good for a laugh, but most of all it WORKED! This set-up will not be making a debut on Instructables anytime soon, but I was shocked by what it did to improve the sound of my webcam's stereo microphones. This hodgepodge of materials reduced echo, and tightened and warmed up the sound of my already good but nowhere near great webcam making it the best option for me given my usage and environment. Summary: Go Mic on -10dB cardioid setting is a great little microphone and a great value. YMMV as far as build quality. The regular cardioid setting is highly susceptible to background noise and in my opinion not usable unless you are in a very quiet environment. Omnidirectional setting turns this mic into a piece spy gear. My advice to others who are already using a Logitech c920 webcam and looking for better sound is to not bother with the Go Mic. The c920's microphones are quite good and can be even better with a few tweaks... lol. I plan on constructing a nicer well thought out isolator/surround enclosure that I can use with it either right beside or above my laptop screen. For casual chatting and camming it will more than meet my needs along with the occasional use of an inexpensive lavalier mic. If I choose to step up it will likely be to an AT2020 on a boom arm. ... show more

  • the Samson SAGOMIC Go Mic
Style: USB Microphone
The media could not be loaded. As a content creator , finding the perfect balance between portability and performance in audio equipment has always been a challenge. However, my search has taken a promising turn with the Samson SAGOMIC Go Mic Portable USB Condenser Microphone. This pint-sized dynamo has proven itself as a versatile companion for capturing high-quality audio on the go. Right out of the box, the Samson Go Mic impresses with its compact size and sleek design. Crafted from durable materials, the microphone feels sturdy and well-constructed in hand. The attention to detail in design is evident, and it exudes a professional vibe that's essential for any serious content creator or musician. The microphone's finish and accents contribute to its aesthetic appeal, making it an attractive addition to any setup. One of the standout features of the Samson Go Mic is its plug-and-play simplicity. With USB connectivity, setting up this microphone is a breeze – perfect for those quick recording sessions or live streaming events. The microphone's ability to switch between cardioid and omnidirectional pickup patterns offers flexibility, catering to various recording scenarios. The cardioid mode effectively isolates the sound source, while the omnidirectional mode captures a wider audio field, making it suitable for roundtable discussions or capturing ambient sounds. Despite its small size, the audio quality produced by the Samson Go Mic is commendable. The condenser capsule delivers clear, detailed recordings with a balanced frequency response. Whether recording vocals, instruments, or even podcasts on the go, the microphone captures nuances well, creating a professional impression with minimal post-processing required. The built-in headphone output is a convenient addition, enabling real-time monitoring without latency issues. The portability factor of the Samson Go Mic is undoubtedly one of its major strengths. The folding design allows it to be easily stowed away in a laptop bag or backpack, making it a perfect companion for vloggers, podcasters, and musicians who are frequently on the move. Additionally, the included carry pouch offers an extra layer of protection during travel. However, the microphone's small size also brings a few limitations. While the audio quality is impressive for its size, it might not fully satisfy audio purists seeking studio-level recording precision. The small diaphragm limits its ability to capture the full depth of certain sounds, resulting in a slightly condensed sound profile. In conclusion, the Samson SAGOMIC Go Mic Portable USB Condenser Microphone is a commendable tool for content creators who prioritize portability without compromising too much on audio quality. Its compact design, easy setup, and versatility in pickup patterns make it an ideal choice for on-the-go recording needs. While it may not replace high-end studio microphones, its performance and convenience factor make it a valuable addition to any content creator's arsenal. If you're in need of a portable affordable microphone to capture your creative endeavors wherever you go, the Samson Go Mic could be your next go-to companion. ... show more
