I use this to mark pickleball court lines on tennis courts. I find that going back and forth with a light touch works best. Originally, I was going in one direction with a firm touch; that did not provide a smooth line. Maybe it depends on the surface. Previously, I was using sidewalk chalk, which worked fine between rain storms. This stuff does not seem to be affected by the rain. Best cheap solid paint markers I've found, have no issues writing and the twist feature is nice. Only downside is that it struggles to write on wet surfaces.
