Description

A blackly funny, gloriously queer coming-of-age fantasy with love, beauty and necromancy by World Fantasy Award-winning author C.S.E. Cooney. WINNER OF THE 2023 WORLD FANTASY AWAY FOR BEST NOVEL Nothing complicates life like Death. Lanie Stones, the daughter of crown-appointed killers, was born with a gift for necromancy—and a literal allergy to violence. For her own safety, she was raised in isolation in a crumbling mansion by the family’s mouldering revenant. When Lanie’s parents are murdered, she and her psychotic sister Nita must settle their extensive debts or lose their ancestral home. When Liriat’s ruler, too, is murdered, it throws the whole nation’s future into doubt. Hunted by Liriat’s enemies, terrorised by family ghosts and tortured by a forbidden love for a childhood friend, Lanie will need more than luck to get through the next few months—but when the goddess of Death is on your side, anything is possible. • A wonderfully inventive world
I don't often write reviews but I felt compelled to do so for Saint Death's Daughter. It is as beautifully written as it is gripping and I love Cooney's worldbuilding which is both evocative and mysterious. Small hints are dropped throughout that only become clear as you continue through the novel. I highly recommend. ... show more

  • Dark and beautiful and amazing
This is the most beautiful, dark, terrifying book I have ever read. It is healing in so many ways. I originally thought it would he too tough to go through but thankfully I did. Seriously, it's like mystery, fantasy, Gothic art and poetry all had a baby.

  • 1st volume in a new paranormal romance trilogy focused on death
Teenage Laynie ( Miscellaneous Immiscible Stones) is a neuromancer from a family of psychopathic hereditary assassins to the rulers of Liriat. Dedicated to the Goddess of Death & raised by a ghost, Laynie finds herself the sole surviving adult following the murders of her father, mother, older sister & great aunt, responsible for preserving the indebted family estate & the lives of her niece & bespelled brother-in-law. The world-building is intricate, albeit didactical, but Laynie, her family, & the gods, ghosts, & magicians they encounter are both vivid & credible. I find myself looking forward to the next volume in this trilogy. ... show more

  • Likeable main character, but still fun & deadly
Great world building, a character that’s fun to watch learn and grow, and death magic - I’m furious that I misread the synopsis and thought the second book was already out! Will wait patiently, and look forward to a reread of this to celebrate book #2 being released.

  • Excellent
This book was in a Bookbub daily email, and the cover caught my attention, so I decided to give it a shot (despite having a TBR list 100 miles long). I loved it. The book gives a very dark Addams Family-esque vibe; a large family manor, family members that have strange (and sometimes violent) vocations, a rich family history with strange deaths abound. The book follows Lanie, the latest necromancer in the Stones family line. She's isolated from her family, as her powers also come with an allergy to violence. Witnessing violence, hearing tales of violent ends, or even being touched by family members that serve as the royal family's executioner and assassin give her echo wounds that could be fatal. She is raised by the family's revenant (a lady Lurch, if you will), and is educated partially by a ghost of a Stones ancestor and a proclivity for learning and experimentation. After both of her parents are assassinated, the massive debts they amassed are due in full, or the manor and lands are forfeit. Lanie has no other option than to call her older sister home from abroad. This unleashes a chain of vengeance that finds Lanie homeless and on the run. The journey that follows is full of tension, friendship, love, and sacrifice. I loved it. I could hardly put the book down. ... show more

  • A wonderfully imaginative tale that is somehow missing a protagonist
Another lyrical yarn by CSE Cooney, a marvelously conjured world filled with well-imagined personalities. It me half a book of increasingly jarring dissonance to realize what was missing. Maybe due to having such an extraordinarily abusive upbringing, the central character has no will at all. She clearly has wants of her own, but she acts on none of them, just dutifully delivering whatever other people want for her or from her. I don’t think she even initiates a kiss, despite several interesting prospects. And the most semaphored plot development in the book isn’t even resolved by the end of it. Presumably there is a sequel in the offing, but it just feels lame, or maybe forgotten. It wish it were otherwise, and it’s probably her editor’s fault, but I can’t count this amongst the author’s best work. ... show more

  • Sweet, sad, silly and sensational
This book surprised me with the depth of the relationships. I’ve read others comment on the world building and it is exceptional. So many interesting places that are only hinted that but I hope we’ll get to visit in the future books. But the people are fantastic. The joys and pains of raising a child. The crap that comes from having a dysfunctional birth family and the warmth of building a family of choice. Oh and cool magic and a protagonist that wields it with humility and grace. Great stuff. ... show more

  • Excellent world building
Loved the world building, loved the characters and how alive they felt. Magic systems were really neat, and especially everything about the Blackbird Bride was fascinating. Only thing keeping this from 5 stars for me is that it didn't really feel like an easy read. Normally I fly through books really fast, but this one felt like a struggle, like it took time to digest. Not a feeling I'm used to having from fiction. That being said, if more was written in this world I wouldn't hesitate to buy it! ... show more
