The only reason I didn't give the heater 5 stars was that it doesn't keep the water in the birdbath completely melted when the temp is below 15, but melts only 4-6 inches around the heater. Otherwise, it's an attractive heater and the cord is very substantial.

I thought this would be a dud when it came to the really cold temps, but I took a chance. It worked just as I thought it would. I used it in a small bird bath and it did keep the water open although it was just a small hole above the heater.

We are avid bird lovers but have never tried watering the little creatures during the winter. We live in Minnesota where the temperatures can dip from -20 to -30 degrees below zero so we had never bothered trying before. But since we had so many different types of birds in our backyard this year we wanted to try. This little heater has been the best $16 we ever spent. It has worked consistently since we started using it in December. We also have had a very cold winter this year with temps reaching -30 degrees below zero! I seriously had my doubts on a few occasions when I would hear the forecast but this little heater worked like a charm. Not once did the bird bath ever freeze over. I don’t know what to say about this, but they sent me a ‘new’ one as well as a ‘defective’ item. Since I only purchased one I was not sure what to do. I am trying out the new one, and may try the defective one later and will then submit an updated review.

It was -24* in Denver Thursday. I freeze protected the water supply at the feeder temporarily with a 1500 watt box heater. OnFriday, the "upgrade glazed stone" 60 watt bath heater arrived. I hooked it up right away. The tempreture got down to -6 overnight Friday. The bath was completely ice-free when I checked it Saturday morning. I haven't had it long enough to rate the longevity; but it seems well built. I looked at many other bath heaters on Amazon and liked shape and color of this one best. I have alot of birds and feeders. I have a concrete bath, small one. I never realized how much water birds drink. So I ordered this hoping to keep my bath thawed and from cracking. We just had negative 30 degree weather and it kept most of the water thawed. I did purchase a heavy duty outdoor extension cord for it as the cord is short.
