Parts of it did ice over but it did not freeze completely so the fountain can keep running g and the bird can still something to drink. It is in the single digits Temps here right now as well. I used one of these little heaters in the lowest level of my garden fountain and was able to keep it running until the 2nd week in January! Usually I put it to bed for the winter around Thanksgiving. The only reason I put it away in January was because we had extreme cold coming in and I didn’t want to risk having the resin fountain crack. I also had a concrete birdbath with the same little heater in it, and when the cold weather came, it worked amazingly well. We had negative temps for several days, and even when we had -17° the birdbath didn’t entirely freeze over! The edges had ice, but the center was still water. These little heaters definitely exceeded any expectations I had. Love them!

I have about 4 gallons in my birdbath, and even in a MN winter it's a bit too warm I think with this heater. I wanted it to not freeze, but I've given the birds a bit of a hot tub. Perhaps they love it, I'm not an expert, if so then disregard my claim. The downside is that the warm water evaporates really fast. I think this could go at about 50% of the current power draw and be perfect.

I purchased 2 in preparation for the ice and snow that we sometimes get in the south. I've had these plugged in for 6 weeks now. No problems whatsoever. They are weighted and rest securely in the bowls. I highly recommend these.

I’ve gone through so many bird bath heaters. The flat ones that you have to put a rock on to hold it down and they corrode, the metal coils that are too big for a shallow bird bath, etc. I have a carved stone bird bath and this heater looks like a rock, doesn’t corrode, is heavy enough that it stays under the water, and keeps the ice away. This is a real win.
