  • Best childproof locks - simple, innovative, EFFECTIVE
Our little guy has finally discovered the magical world of cupboards which made us realize additional kid proofing was needed. I tried to install the "hook-latch-push down to open-thingys". Yeah, those suck pretty bad. No matter what I did I couldn't get those things to work because of physics. They might work in a parallel universe with parallel universe cupboards but not in this universe. The reviews for all the other options were mixed at best. However these got great reviews. So we decided to try these out. Are they more expensive? Yes...yes they are. Do they work awesome? Yes...yes they do. These lock the cupboard nice and tight. No chance for smashing little fingers, or weaseling something harmful out of the cupboard. The only way to open these is to use the included magnetic key (however any strong magnet will work). I love that you can disable the locks if needed returning your cupboards essentially to pre-rugrat glory. The only downside is forgetting the cupboards are locked which could potentially result in a dislocated shoulder. "Oh right...locked". Okay, okay...not that bad but realizing your cupboards are locked takes some getting used to. There have been times when finding the key took a few minutes. So investing in a few extra might be smart. As others have mentioned, the fridge is a GREAT place for the key. As an alternative, hidden in your son's toy basket can be fun too. If you have anything other than flat front doors the magnet key might end up in a weird place. Ours for example ends up on an angle because it rests on a router bevel in the door. No big deal, it just looks a bit weird. Beyond these few small issues we love these. Installation can be tedious but not nearly as bad as the aforementioned plastic-hook monstrosities. Have a baby? Want to keep him/her safe? Buy these. :) ... show more

  • Easy to install and keeps our 3 year old out which no others have.
The multiple engineers in my family all geeked out over the simple but very effective paper template that makes installation so simple. Once installed you cannot see them from the outside at all which was so nice after years of big bulky plastic things looking awful on our cabinets. Plus these are the first lock to totally keep my highly intelligent 3 year old out. The spring loaded ones similar to this she had figured out in under 10 minutes by just reaching her hand in through the little gap and pushing the lever down. These keep the cabinets shut much tighter so you cannot reach through at all. We just make sure to store the magnet key at the very top of our fridge. Also I appreciate that you can toggle a lever on the lock if you want them to stay unlocked. That way if you are going in and out of a cabinet over and over for a few minutes you don't have to use the key each time. Really nice lock overall and I have already bought more. Only thing I was slightly disappointed on (but really I should have asked about it first so it's my fault) is that I had planned to put some of these on metal storage cabinet doors in our garage but the metal doors activated the magnetic lever and so they were stuck in the unlocked position. It didn't occur to me that the metal doors would do that as I thought it would have to be a magnet not just a piece of metal. Not a big deal I just had to get another solution for the metal doors but just something to be aware of if your cabinets have metal doors too. So long as they are wooden you should be good. ... show more

  • Work well compared with others, but require a little patience to install
We have a very curious 19 month old, who has discovered the joy of rummaging through everything he can get his little hands on. The need arose to lock some of the kitchen cabinets and drawers, and after much time doing research, I purchased 2 4-packs of these based upon the reviews of others. The distinguishing features of these are: easy to disable auto locking feature, quality of construction, and strength of lock when locked (FYI: NONE of the adhesive mounted locks work well at all). Each set of 4 comes with 4 mounting templates, screws, and 1 unlocking magnet key. In addition to the 4 screws used to mount the lock to the drawer/cabinet and the 2 to mount the strikeplate to the frame, it is necessary to drill a 9/16" hole under the lock body to accept the unlock pin, which protrudes into the cabinet material and is activated with the key. This hole must be deep enough to have it's floor about 1/8" from the outside face of the cabinet, in order for the magnet to successfully penetrate the depth of the material. I tell you this because if, at some point in the future you no longer need these and remove them, the locking pin hole will need to be backfilled with wood putty, as it is large and deep. That said, these do work very well. The first lock took about 45 minutes to install, and subsequent ones about 20 minutes. The included templates work quite well, although some manual adjustments will be necessary for drawers with false faceplates, etc. ... show more

  • Keep The Kids Out
I used these for three kids. Great at keeping knives and pills out of reach. Magnet lock works great!

  • Nothing beats these
These work great and despite the 4-star rating, there is nothing else I'd rather buy. Four stars because of their size/bulk, which impacts the ability to install on some drawers that have a face mounted to the drawer box. I had to route out a bit of the drawer box on some drawers to get them to fit properly. Once installed properly, they do a pretty decent job locking the drawer or cabinet. I've accidentally yanked one open a couple times forgetting they were installed and feared I might have broken something, but was able to improve the hold by ensuring my cup-hinges on the cabinet were tight and didn't allow any downward rotation of the door. Also, my cabinets are mitered at 45 at their rail/stile joints and secured in the back with an invisible staple (or something else metallic). This causes the locking mechanism to unlock if placed near the joint, so I have to place it about 3" in from the edge, which reduces the strength of the lock (shorter lever). ... show more
