Description

A case of mistaken identity throws two lackluster singers into the world of professional safe-cracking. Before long they are "persuaded" by local gangsters to rob three different safes around town, and failure is not an option.“Safe Men opens up comedy's combination lock on safecrackers, Jewish gangsters, and abysmally bad singer-songwriters.” – Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle“...writer-director John Hamburg grants even his least significant characters a humanity that gives the film a sort of warm, fuzzy glow.’ - Nathan Rabin, A.V. • ONE OF THE GREATS!!!!
I first saw this movie in 1999 when it came out on VHS. I was at 'Blockbuster Video' and they used to have a section in the video store called 'Sundance' and all the independent movies were bunched together on a few shelves. I rented a couple other movies from this section and noticed a common denominator that Avy Kaufman was the casting agent on all of them. I picked up this movie not knowing what it was and noticed that indeed Mrs. Avy Kaufman was again the casting director so on that basis alone I decided to take the plunge and rent this movie. I put it in my VHS player as I sat in my depressing little apartment and laughed many times and the times I wasn't laughing I had a big smile on my face. This movie was and is SO FANTASTIC! The dialogue and characters had me giggling and engaged. I tried showing it to some of my friends, I would tell them, "this is the best movie ever, you're going to love it" and many of them didn't, they told me I was "stupid" and they just couldn't see the genius of John Hamburg (the Writer/Director). I kept talking about the film whenever and wherever I could until I found two friends that had already seen it and loved it as well. In 1999 none of the actors in this film were even remotely famous even though many of them are huge names in TV and Film today, but even in 1999 they were all excellent actors. I still love this movie and have probably seen it a hundred times. I'll still watch it a few times a year and it still brings a smile to my face. If you decide to take the plunge and watch this movie check for the great speech by Harvey Fierstein about whether or not he has killed a man, and also look out for a masterful performance by Mr. Veal Chop himself Paul Giamatti. There are too many good things to list in this film from Sam Rockwell to Steve Zahn, to "Victor the dance guru" teaching "little big fat" some moves for his Bar Mitzvah, so just watch it and make your own list about the greatness of this comedy masterpiece. ... show more

  • A classic comedy gem!
One of my favorite comedies of all time! A must watch. I turn everyone I can onto this fantastic piece of finished finery.

  • " What a great actor. Now he's everywhere
Sam Rockwell kind of snuck up on me over the years, starting with "Box of Moonlight." What a great actor. Now he's everywhere. But in this early indie called "Safe Men" it's the dialog that was a revelation to me-- yeah it's a 'crime flick.' a caper, but me the fledling screenwriter got a big kick out of this dialog that covers everything else in the universe except safecracking. ... show more

  • A good Holiday Stocking Stuffer
GReat movie. Giving it as a gift. I think more movies should be made that are wholesome and have true meaning. Very funny.

  • An acquired taste, but a gem nonetheless
I searched out this movie after it appeared on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 Best Movies You've Never Seen. Being a Sam Rockwell fan, I'm always interested in his work (BTW, Rockwell is in 3 movies on EW's list). I found it on demand from my local cable provider, and watched it twice. Great early work by Rockwell, Paul Giamatti and Steve Zahn (who was young and GORGEOUS in this film). If nothing else, you've got to see it for the best bar mitzvah party EVER. ... show more

  • By the time I get home, flip on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, I'm looking at 36 thousand of his hard earned female deer
Safe Men is a very lame comedy starring Steve Zahn and Sam Rockwell as Eddie and Sam, two wannabe Simon & Garfunkels who get mistaken for safe crackers and coerced into cracking safes for Big Fat Bernie Gale Jr. (Michael Lerner) and his henchman, Veal Chop (Paul Giamatti). They are in the Jewish Mafia. -------- Sam: He's in the Jewish Mafia. It's probably more like a club than an organization. ================ If Sam & Eddie can't get crackin' and start cracking those safes, they will be killed. Meanwhile, Frank (Mark Ruffalo) and Mitchell (Josh Pais) are the real safe crackers, but Frank is off his game since being dumped by Hannah, Leo the Fence's (Harvey Fierstein) daughter (Christina Kirk). -------------- Hannah's dad: I once sold a woman a pair of exploding slacks. ================== Sam & Eddie keep running into Frank & Mitchell, as they are sent to crack the same safes. Sam meets Hannah while trying to crack her dad's safe. He keeps trying to ask her out. Hannah doesn't date safe crackers anymore, but Sam is persistent. He is doing at least a little better than the lovelorn Frank, who keeps trying to win her back. --------- Sam: Sweet 'stache. Frank: Thanks, bro. ================ Safe Men has a few laughs, but the half baked concept mostly has you wondering why this movie was ever made in the first place. Rockwell, Giamatti, Ruffalo, and Zahn will go on to bigger and better stuff, so it is a chance to see them in their formative stages, but hardly worth the trouble. There are lots of whacky ideas and riffs in Safe Men, but it is really kind of a mess. Giamatti tried the hardest, with his character, Veal Chop, but his accent reminded me of Dan Ackroyd at his most annoying. There were some funny moments when Jewish Mafia boss Big Fat Bernie Gayle's son was bar mitzvahed, but it couldn't make up for the many other jokes that went nowhere. -------------- M.C. Victor: From the floor to the ceiling, how ya feeling? From the bris to this, he can't miss. From the Wailing Wall to the reception hall, to all y'all. Put your hands together for Big Fat Bernie Gayle Junior. ==================== Bottom Line is Safe Men takes a few risks, and doesn't just play it safe, but the risks don't pay off. Choke (2008) Sam Rockwell was Victor Mancini Matchstick Men (Widescreen Edition) (Snap Case) (2003) Sam Rockwell was Frank Mercer Management (2008) Steve Zahn was Mike Art School Confidential (2006) Michael Lerner was Art Dealer Sideways (Widescreen Edition) (2004) Paul Giamatti was Miles American Splendor (2003) Paul Giamatti was Harvey Pekar Private Parts (1997) Paul Giamatti was Kenny Zodiac (Widescreen Edition) (2007) Mark Ruffalo was Inspector David Toschi Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Widescreen Edition) (2004) Mark Ruffalo was Stan Bullets Over Broadway (1994) Harvey Fierstein was Sid Loomis -------------- Veal Chop: By the time I get home, flip on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, I'm looking at 36 thousand of his hard earned female deer. ================== ... show more

  • A true overlooked gem, especially for fans of Wes Anderson
This has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it, back in 1999 or 2000. The cast is amazing, especially considering that so few people have ever even heard of this film. If you're a fan of sweet-spirited irony mixed with screwball antics along the lines of Wes Anderson, then this is definitely a movie for you. ... show more

  • great actors - terrible movie
Don't get excited by the collection of great actors. The movie is sub-par. Never really gets interesting and is painfully slow.
