  • Easy to Read version of Scaled Agile Concepts
This is a great easy to read and understandable documentation of SAFe 5.0 concepts. Everything they teach in the "Leading SAFe" training and more is included in this book. Highly recommend for folks who are new to Scaled Agile. Another book you may want to look in to is "Rollout" by Alex Yakyma which is a well written fiction around implementation of SAFe principles in a corporate environment. Believe it or not, it is like one of those thrillers you don't want to put down once you start reading. ... show more

  • Useful (essential?) for SAFe Agilist 5.0 exam
I bought this book as a study aid for the SAFe Agilist exam. My company required us project managers to take the SAFe Agile training and "encouraged" us to take (and pass) the certification examination. I did both, with the help of this book. Note that everything in this book is on the website referenced multiple times inside this book. However, I find that studying from a book is better for me since a good book organizes the data into common subject areas and helps compartmentalize the data presented. That said, the study guide provided by my trainer for my exam had links to web pages that pulled data from more than one chapter in the book. This is also helpful because each link gives you all the data for that subject on a single web page regardless of how many chapters that data is spread over in the book. An 11-page glossary of SAFe Agile terms and 18-page index are included at the end of the book, along with a few pages of ads. The website has capacity to store error corrections and supplements should the publishers wish to include any, so be sure to register your book on the site. If this book is so useful, why just four stars and not five? Content-wise this is a 5-star book. If you're reading for pleasure (why would you?) this book is the complete bible for SAFe Agile version 5.0. If you're studying for the SAFe Agile 5.0 exam this book has all the information you'll need to answer the exam questions correctly. The 4-star rating is for the entire product, not just the data content and this book could be improved. For example, the book is a paperback, and much thinner than I expected for this price. For a book with a $39.99 cover price, shouldn't it be a hardcover? And shouldn't it be more than 1 centimeter thick? They could have chosen thicker paper to give the book a better feel. Overall it seems well-bound and durable enough, but seems overpriced for the materials used. Another example is the book's table of contents. Sure, it lists the three main parts and the 16 subsections (numbered continuously between parts 1, 2, and 3), but there are many other headings inside the chapters that are not detailed in the table of contents. This makes searching for a specific topic more work than it needs to be. I've seen other books that have a table of contents that detail all the section headings, or have two tables of contents, one with an overview and another with detail. I ended up adding numbers (in pencil) to ALL the headings in the book and transferring that to a Word document. My Word file had numbering like: 6, 6.1, 6.1.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.3, and so forth, depending on how many subheading there were per section. This made finding stuff super simple. This outline also enabled me to keep additional notes on each section, like noting the key point of each section or defining key terms. The authors make sure to remind you several times how great Agile is, if you implement their conception of it, and as a big ego booster to themselves have their "About" page just before the real content of the book starts. More humble authors include this on the LAST page of the book. Should you buy this book? If you're planning to take the SAFe Agile 5.0 examination, then yes, you should buy this book. I don't know under what other conditions you would consider purchasing it, unless you work for a company that uses the Agile framework and you want to learn more about it on your own. I can't conceive of this book as pleasure reading even though it is well-written. ... show more

  • Jumping into SAFe Agile
I am new to Agile and I needed something that can bring me into the fold to understand the ins-and-outs. Though I understand this is something that requires practice, this book ABSOLUTELY gives me the head start I need.

  • Waste of money
Unfortunately nothing to see or learn that can't be found on SAFe website. Expected a better break down of the methodology but it's right of the website. Don't buy!

  • Excellent for learning SAFe
As part of my homework, I just completed the book SAFe Distilled 5.0, achieving business agility with the scaled agile framework by Richard Knaster and Dean Leffingwel. It was a very packed book. It covered three sections, the need for agility, the core competencies of a lean enterprise, and how toimplimented SAFe, measuer and grow. I had expected a dry, formulaic book describing the rituals of SAFe. I found that it covered a lot more, including lean / agile mindsets. It looked at multiple levels, from the individual mindset up to SAFe portfolio management. It goes into depth on many topics, including the principles, how they recommend applying agile at scale, and training multiple stakeholders and roles. Each chapter is a topic to review and contemplate. I got a lot from the first pass at the book, and I will need to review this book again and go a little slower. SAFe, like a few other methodologies, attempts to scale from individual agile teams to work on larger projects. While the typical scrum team works well for projects that only require one team, SAFe and other frameworks allow you to coordinate multiple teams on the same project. I have worked briefly in an environment that was in cadence with the SAFe teams although our team was on the operations side, supporting the development teams and owning supporting tooling. This book was an excellent overview of the SAFe practices, and, as stated, I will be reviewing it again. ... show more
