  • Before purchasing consider:
”A few observations to consider before purchasing. First, although this book is advertised as being suitable for beginners, save your money until you have a thorough understanding of the Swift language. You’re not going to grasp the concepts presented unless your Swift knowledge is well grounded in Object Oriented Programming. In other words, get intimately comfortable with how Classes and Structs are built, instantiated, and interact with each other. There are many nuances In the Swift language and the book will only cause frustration unless you become fluent before purchasing. Second, it’s not yet ready for prime time. As evident by visiting the forum that supports the book, you will find a number of consumers asking questions about errors only to be told they’ll be fixed during the next edition. Keep in mind that the length of time for an update appears to be a year or more. Further, if you purchased the printed version you’re not eligible for any future corrections unless you’re willing to fork out another $60 dollars, even though the publisher is aware of the errors in the current edition. On the other hand, if you purchased the digital addition - for the same price as the printed version - future updates are included in the purchase price. That said, after purchasing the printed version you can buy the digital version for an additional $32 dollars. They claim this is a discount for your patronage. Wow $32 dollars for the exact same book! All said, because there are known errors in the book Raywenderlich (publisher) should provide the updates free of charge to all customers - even if it’s just a digital errata that can be downloaded . Discrimination against those who prefer a hardcover book, in my opinion, is not a healthy business model especially when both versions are priced at the same amount. Lastly, as an older reader I prefer a printed copy because of the eye strain caused by bright screens. As someone who enjoys coding I already spend an excessive amount of time staring at monitors so reading a printed book is a welcome change. ... show more
