  • Perfect size, well built and great value
Just received my Blackbird Spotting Scope. First impression upon opening the box is how small it is. Was concerned that it was too small but after setting it up and looking at the landscape and some wildlife around our house there is no concern on the size. Large enough for what I need and yet small enough to not take up too much space and makes it very easy to carry with me whenever I go places. The zoom is perfect and the focus ring are both very smooth and easy to use without losing what you were looking at and have to readjust the scope. The unit itself feels very sturdy along with the metal tripod. I would not consider banging it around but it feels like it would stand up on travels and use. I love the coating used on it which makes it less likely to get dropped from slipping out of my hands especially in back country where conditions can get a bit messy. I took it out of the box and was able to use it fully without the instructions which I did read after playing with it for a while. Hands on kind of guy to see how things work first. Same as asking for directions. I purchased it for going to the shooting range but have not been able to get there yet. That comes next week end but I have no concerns that it will provide me with what I wanted. Not to have to walk 50 or more yards each time I shoot to see where my shots hit. All in all it is a great little scope for exactly what I need, the price is good for what you get, the scope is built to last and be used, I would recommend this to friends and I actually have a friend in mind to gift one to. Great product. ... show more

  • The size is perfect and deceiving
I'm a target shooter so I plan on using this Blackbird for spotting shots on paper targets at 100/200 yards and steel targets out to 1000 yards. The size is perfect and deceiving. I carry a lot of equipment so already loaded with gear it is very nice to know your scope won't add to the already regrettable load of equipment to haul. By deceiving I mean that despite the compact size and light weight this scope is amazing compared to other larger/heavier scopes I've encountered The rubber armor casing makes the scope feel really nice in the hand. It's not the thickest I've seen but because of the light weight it's not necessary to have a thicker rubber coat. Despite this the scope feels solid in the hand and the focus ring is smooth but firm. For those who have experienced the super snug focus and the hassle to get it to the perfect picture to then have the ring spring back out of focus you'll be in heaven with this scope. Because of its light weight you tend to forget that every other scope out there needs to have a lot of padding to be able to withstand shock. This scope is the way to go. Now granted, I do tend to take care of my stuff so I won't go kicking and dropping this scope to test it but I won't be afraid if it tumbles out of the bag or gets knocked over while on a tripod. I really haven't tried the tripod it come with. I think it will be sufficient for what it's intended to do but I already have another tripod it's going on so can't comment on this. That said, I think metal is the way to go. Uses: Shooting, birding, spotting, hunting, etc. The glass on this is amazingly clear so pick you activity requiring or benefiting from the use of magnified optics and this is the scope you need. If you want to score points with someone who's in the market for a quality glass spotting scope this would make a perfect gift. I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that I either spend $350 on a used name brand scope of shell out $800 for a brand new one. I came across the Blackbird on YouTube and read all the reviews on Amazon. I'm glad I took the chance to give this scope a try. You'll make someone very happy when you gift this to them. The scope is intuitive so pretty easy to use. I've used other scopes before and when you go to the higher end of the magnification the picture gets really bad. At first I didn't believe the magnification was working correct because I was expecting that image distortion to kick in so I kept having to look at the dial to convince myself I "was" on 36x....and YES the image is clear from edge to edge of the glass. Don't wait and get your scope now before they decide they really could charge more money for this and still be giving you a quality scope. I don't know how you did this, i.e., get the quality of glass, with the right amount of magnification, in a compact package, at such good price. You want to talk about "VALUE"? This is one awesome scope ... show more

  • Nice, light spotting scope at a great price
I bought this as a lightweight birding scope. I am not a shooter, which seems to be the other market for scopes, so can't comment on it for that. The weight is great – that’s why I bought it. I knew I would rarely be willing to carry a full-sized, larger/heavier scope so that, even if optically better and offering more magnification, I would use that far less. The only obvious competitor I could find, the Hummingbird, costs far more. I wanted something that would let me see birds I couldn't make out well enough with my binoculars. It does that quite well, with clear, sharp images. I did notice occasional, minor purple fringing in high contrast situations, but not horrible or unexpected; I knew this did not have ED glass. It feels good - lightweight but solid and good quality. I found the focus ring smooth and easy with no unexpected play. Zoom control was also fine. You do have to refocus just a little after zooming. I'm very happy with it at the price; I am not aware of anything comparable. I haven’t done a side-by-side with a high-end scope and expect I would then see it is not quite as bright/sharp, but it does what I wanted – lets me see a bird up closer so I can try to ID a bird that’s too far away with my binoculars. And it's light enough I won't decide to leave it at home because I don't want to lug it around when hiking. Oh - the answer I got from Roxant about waterproofness is what some others have reported. "Water resistant, but don't dunk it under water." They have no IPX rating. I expect that means it should be fine outdoors here in the Pacific Northwest in our frequent drizzle but I don't have actual experience over time for that. ... show more
