1) Layout is Good So first of all this is a real Roku remote that's a perfect replacement for the remote that came with my TCL Roku TV. All the buttons are in the same place with two exceptions: The voice search button is added in between the back arrow and star button and the the preset buttons were arranged two rows of two instead of vertical. That said, this upgraded remote was made with a feel so similar to the original remote that I needed 0 time to become accustom to the new layout. 2) False Advertising Regarding Preset Buttons So if you're like me, you see the blank preset buttons in the product photos, and think "finally, I'm rid of useless presets and can set my own." Nope! The four presets came loaded with Netflix, Parmount Plus, and two services that I don't have: Disney Plus and Apple TV. This what I hated most about the original remote which had a preset for Amazon Prime and Netflix, but also included Sling and CBS News (seriously it did) which I didn't have. Roku, let me choose presets when ordering the remote if I can't set them myself instead of sending me remotes with the presets apparently randomly chosen! 3) Pairing was Easy I'm the type who reads the instructions, but they were short and simple. Go to the Roku home screen. Put the batteries in, and press the pairing button located in the battery compartment until the indicator light in the battery compartment flashes green. I didn't even get to pressing the pairing button. As soon as the batteries in, the indicator starting flashing, and the word "pairing" started flashing on my TCL Roku TV. Within seconds I had a second working Roku remote (and the other one continues to work too so I can use either now). 4) Voice search works I was a little concerned that this feature wouldn't work well given the inexpensive price, but it does! I can request to open a particular Roku App like Amazon Prime or Youtube, but I am also able to use voice to navigate around inside of an App. So for example, 1) I was able to use the voice feature to go to Netflix, and then open a particular show inside of Netflix; and 2) I was able to use voice to go to Youtube, and then specifically request by voice to open my Watch Later list. Oh... and you can search out a particular show from the home menu with voice so you can simply say "House of the Dragon" and it will pull up options to watch it. Overall: I was disappointed by the presets were pre-populated, but at least Roku didn't stick CBS News on one of them this time. I was surprised at how well the voice function works as it makes finding programs so much easier. Overall, this is worth the relatively inexpensive price to upgrade your Roku experience, and I really wish I had seen a mention sooner that Roku voice remotes existed.

Roku remote model RCAL7R THE GOOD: The size is good. It connected to the TV easily and quickly. Buttons and otherwise, it has functioned well. The buttons are soft and quiet, whereas some other Roku remotes have hard plastic buttons that are also loud. This remote is made of smooth plastic, not the abrasive plastic that some other Roku remotes are made of. THE BAD: It has gone through batteries faster than any other remote I've had.

I didn’t realize this model uses the home network to communicate with the TV rather than IR when I ordered. It’s wonderful to be anywhere in the room with the remote and be able to increase the volume, change the channel, etc. For those reviewers who complain it is slower than their old remote, it is most likely they don’t realize this remote uses the home wireless network. If their home equipment is slow or overloaded, it will be slow for this remote. And even if the network is fast, it will be slower going through the network than for a direct IR signal pointed at the TV. But for me, the increased delay is not noticeable enough to care. The convenience factor is fantastic! The glazed surface of the remote is ‘slip free’, compared to the smooth surface of the original remote. I prefer the smooth surface, simply because it seems like I can keep it clean easier than the glazed surface, but that’s a minor complaint. Great remote! And one other possible reason the remote might not work for you is if you forget to change the TV settings to ‘fast start’. The remote will ONLY work if the TV setting is on ‘Fast Start’.

I have had Roku devices for many years, but this is my first remote with voice recognition. The voice feature is a major improvement most of the time. I will be comparing the voice remote with the almost identical looking remotes without the microphone. First of all, if you have an older Roku device, there is a good chance that it is compatible with the new voice remote. Check on the Roku website (mentioned in the Amazon listing) to be sure. (Hint: if your really old Roku operates at a snail's pace, you need a newer one, voice or not). My new voice remote was surprisingly easy to set up. You pair it by pressing a button and it just works. No TV code required. The TV volume and mute buttons are on the side of the Roku and I had to learn not to press them accidentally, which is quite easy to do. The TV power button is at the top and I've pressed it a number of times while meaning to press the Roku home button. Muscle memory from my previous remotes. You get better with use. The voice command function is powerful but what is does is somewhat limited by what it can do and how you say the command. Don't get me wrong, you can do a lot but there is some learning involved. Watching a YouTube tutorial is helpful. Sometimes I still revert to the dreaded on-screen typing. I didn't know I could use a voice remote on my older Roku devices, and I am very happy with my new, improved Roku experience! I would give it 4.5 stars if I could.

This voice remote has completely transformed my Roku experience. Setup was quick and effortless; just paired it and it was ready to go. The voice search is surprisingly accurate, saving me time and hassle when looking for shows or apps. I also love the ability to control the TV power and volume, eliminating the need for multiple remotes. It’s lightweight, responsive, and feels durable. If you use Roku regularly, this remote is absolutely worth the upgrade.
