  • Best shotgun microphone you'll ever own...
I got the NTG3 for a Canon XF100 I use for my YouTube channel and it's easily one of the best microphones I've ever used. Period. Audio recording quality is fantastic. There's literally zero static that comes from this thing, which you unfortunately get from cheaper shotgun mics. If you've ever used a decent condenser microphone, you'll know that you get that nice, deep, smooth audio. That's what you get with the NTG3. The sound is so nice you can literally even use this microphone as an interview or podcasting microphone. It's very versatile. Directionality is great as well. When used at a public place it does a great job reducing background audio, which is super useful if you cover events and a handheld microphone is a no go. Construction quality is phenomenal. The entire unit is made of metal and feels like it'd last a lifetime if properly taken care of. It also comes with a felt lined carrier case as well as a metal tube case if you're doing a lot of traveling where the microphone may get damaged. The only drawback IMO is that it lacks a shockmount. For $700 you'd expect RODE to include their SM3 or something, but no. You don't get one. Then again, the type of people who buy this probably already have a couple shockmounts... ... show more

  • Sent back my NTG-2 & bought the NTG-3
I initally purchased the NTG-2 and did an audio test with a friend who owns the NTG-3. We set up both mics on a boom and recorded to Tascams. Did everything as close as possible including having the same length of cables. The gain was so much better on the NTG-3 that I decided to return the NTG-2 and pay almost 3 times as much for the NTG-3. The aluminum case is way cool, too. The back rejection of this mic is pretty amazing. It almost totally eliminated the ice cream truck down the street. Good thing because I was getting ready to shoot the dude. So, this mic is pretty good at eliminating violence, too. ... show more

  • Fake mics coming from Amazon, Rode no longer honoring warreties
Recently I decide to save up for my first big purchase into sound gear, the Rode NTG3. I got it in and hooked it up, I wasn't impressed, even disappointed. But all the reviews I read, the fact it was my first time using a shot gun mic and the knowledge that it was a $700 mic left me feeling that it was something I was doing wrong. Well I was double checking something on the rode site when they had this announcement plastered over the top. From Rode website "Important information about purchasing from Amazon in the US. RØDE Microphones does not authorize Fulfilled By Amazon. We have purchased counterfeit RØDE products using Fulfilled by Amazon and highly recommend that you only purchase RØDE products from authorised dealers. If you purchase any RØDE microphone from an unauthorized dealer via Fulfilled By Amazon you will not receive any US warranty or technical support." Amazon gave me a refund even though I didn't have the original box and it was over 90 days after my purchase. They were great about it, but still was leery of the fact I may have spent so much money for a fake. Today I got my mic in (ordered from B&H) and the change was noticeable. I got good levels at a much lower input level on my Zoom H4N, hiss was much less and the audio sounded fuller. I had a fake mic for sure. Amazon did right by me, but still felt like I need to give a warning! ... show more

  • Great Rode NTG3 shotgun mic
First impressions! I did a quick video test with the Rode NTG3 up and away out of video frame on a boom stand, connected to the Zoom H6 and line out from the Zoom to my iPhone 6+. This mic is amazing, low noise floor, clean audio with no post processing. I will update this review with a new video after doing some more testing in my home studio. ... show more

  • Expensive but excellent product.
Expensive but excellent product. However, Rode should provide some o-rings with the product. Rode NTG2 fits with Canon XF100 but not Rode NTG3 as it is narrower width than NTG2! Otherwise, no complain.

  • Excellent Sounding Mic
This mic has excellent characteristics; Low Self Noise, nice off axis response, and excellent tonal quality. I plan on using mine out doors in the field for mostly nature recordings. So far during testing, this seems to be great mic for the job and price point. Looking forward to a year of recordings. ... show more

  • I wanted to like it, but that bass
I really wanted to like the ntg3. I’ve used the ntg2 for many years and had high hopes in upgrading. On the positive side, the build quality is great and the audio levels the ntg3 captures are much higher than the ntg2 by maybe 12dB or more (didn’t test precisely). However I ended up returning it because my specific needs are mostly for capturing interviews and after various tests the ntg3 just sounds very bass heavy to me on voices. Some people like that sound, but my personal preference is to capture very clear and nuanced voices and out of the box the ntg3 did not provide that. Instead I moved to a hypercardiod solution that is designed for dialog and I am happy with that. I’m sure this mic is really great for films, capturing scenes, etc but it didn’t quite fit the spot that I was hoping it would. ... show more

  • Great mic
This mic has really top-notch sound quality. We conducted a lot of tests at various distances and the quality of the NTG-3 just really holds up. It works well camera mounted in run and gun situations and really shines boomed. It's worth the extra... videos without great audio are useless.
