Description

One of the glorious Rutshire Chronicles. Into the cut-throat world of Corinium television comes Declan O’Hara, a mega-star of great glamour and integrity with a radiant feckless wife, a handsome son and two ravishing teenage daughters. Living rather too closely across the valley is Rupert Campbell- Black, divorced and as dissolute as ever, and now the Tory Minister for Sport. Declan needs only a few days at Corinium to realize that the Managing Director, Lord Baddingham, is a crook who has recruited him merely to help retain the franchise for Corinium. Baddingham has also enticed Cameron Cook, a gorgeous but domineering woman executive, to produce Declan’s programme. Declan and Cameron detest each other, provoking a storm of controversy into which Rupert plunges with his usual abandon. As a rival group emerges to pitch for the franchise, reputations ripen and decline, true love blossoms and burns, marriages are made and shattered, and sex raises its (delicious) head at almost every throw as, in bed and boardroom, the race is on to capture the Cotswold Crown. • delightful read, engaging characters and plot
This book had me falling for the characters- it’s wonderfully soapy, such fun to read. I look forward to reading the next one.

  • Fun
This book was both engrossing and fun, though rather long. It’s hardly great literature, but it’s more than a beach read. Dame Jilly writes very well and her descriptions of nature are lovely. Maybe she’s turned her talents to something more substantial since this book was published in the ‘80s? BTW, this has just been dramatized by Hulu. The series is kind of a mess…too many characters, etc…but good for Jilly! ... show more

  • Rivals: A highly entertaining read from an author known too little in the US
A very entertaining read. I had to order this book from Britain. It took its sweet time getting here, but it was well wroth the wait. I'm not sure Jilly Cooper has made much of a splash in the US, which is a shame, because this Brit author is a master of the arch social novel of the upper class manners and UK media. The characters are very intelligent, very cultured, and capable of being very bitchy in the way that (one imagines) only upper-class Brits can be. Though the situations are a little unfamiliar to the American reader -- the plot revolves around a battle over the license for a television network (or stations, frankly, I'm not sure) it's nothing you can't suss out, and the business details are incidental to the backstabbing, affairs, and rivalries. "Rivals" is circa 1988, but it didn't strike me as dated as a novel about contemporary American from that period might; perhaps this is one instance where unfamiliarity with the local terms of engagement helps a bit. "Rivals" is second in the 10-book Rutshire Chronicles series, which stretch from 1995 to 2016. I shall read more, even if I have to wait for the books to ship from overseas. Fun stuff. ... show more

  • Loved this book!
This is a grand, sweeping novel. The characters often do the most surprising and wonderful things, as they try to build a successful business, fight off rivals, and find love. There’s artistry, poetry, beautiful descriptions of the English countryside, and devastating treachery. It’s a big novel, lush, elegant, and lots of fun. ... show more

  • 6 stars!!
Love love loved it!!!! I loved the tv series and decided I just had to read the book, I wasn’t sure I was gonna like it or even be able to finish it with it being 700 or so pages! But it’s so worth it! I honestly could have read thousands of pages and never been bored. I love her writing style and the story is wonderful, and the romance is top tier!! ... show more

  • Couldn't stop reading this
The second time I've read this book in a ten year span and I absolutely couldn't put it down. Sometimes I have a problem reading even 200 pages of a book. But I devoured all 800 and something pages chapter by chapter. It was fantastic. Love Taggie to pieces. Absolutely mad about Rupert. Cooper is an artiste. Perfect comedic timing. Description. Character development. And just pure British humour. Absolutely fantastic! ... show more

  • it was ok
It took me 8 months to read this book. I thought there were just too many characters to keep up with. I had to keep going back and re read to remember who was who. I did like the story though.
