  • Mixed diameters, but easy to crack open
I ordered these to restock our mason bee house. These bees prefer the larger tube widths, so many of the tubes will go unused. The smaller sizes might work for leaf cutter bees. I can tell the tubes will be easy to crack open, so that’s a plus.

  • Seem like good quality
I like that they came in a box (other reviewers said they came in a bag and some got broken). And these seem to be nice reeds (note, you WANT them to split in 2 easily when you choose to do that - as this is how you harvest bee cocoons and keep them safe from predators and disease until it's their time to come out). That said, some have reeds with one end closed (I assume b/c it's the bottom of the reed). It would be nice to have that as an option, even if it cost a little more - apparently that closed end keeps predators from getting at the larvae from the back. ... show more

  • Seems like a good alternative to cardboard tubes or bamboo
I am new to mason bee-keeping. I have several houses up but they are filled with bamboo tubes which are difficult to empty in fall or clean in general. These phragmite tubes are thinner-walled, but the tubes themselves have a diameter of about 5 mm in most cases, with others being somewhat larger. So, I will have to see if they are as suitable. They should be easier to open than bamboo. The tubes are open on both ends, unlike some cardboard tubes which have a closed end. But they will withstand moisture better than cardboard. The company has been outstanding in regards to answering any questions. I have written a couple of times and gotten a reply usually within a day. The answers are thought-out and helpful. ... show more

First time use. Will see if my solitary bees are interested this season.

  • short and thin walled
Shorter than typical mason bee nesting tubes. Both ends are open too. The walls are super thin, many were split in places- don’t know if this was done during production and packaging or if they got damaged in shipping.

  • No headline
I bought two packages. One had a couple dozen broken reeds. They are very thin, but that will make them easy to split. A step up from cardboard (waterproof), but not as sturdy as bamboo. A bit on the pricey side for what you get.
