My setup was a "sandwich" consisting of 2" foam building insulation, next the heating mat, next a large aluminum baking sheet on which were placed a variety of disposable plastic seed containers saved from last year. Initially I set the controller for 75 deg F but discovered, with a high quality instant read thermometer (not available from Amazon) that the actual temp near the sensor bulb was 79 deg F. Adjusted to controller to 70 deg F which resulted in an actual temp of 75. Would include a photo of my setup however Amazon has replaced that ability with "Recommended for You in Kindle Books". Not pleased with Amazon for that cute little marketing trick ! Won't encourage me to buy any of their books. ... show more

I use two of these under Sterilite plastic bins that I keep my Dubia roach feeder insect colonies in. These work better than terrarium heaters because 1) they don't attach to the bottom, the container just sits on top so you are not tied to the heat pad and wire when cleaning. 2) they come with a temperature prob you can put in between you egg crates at whatever level you want. I just drilled a pass through hold then low temp hot glued the opening do none could escape. 3) you can easily see and adjust the temp. 1 bin for breeding adults at a higher temp and another for nymphs at a lower temp. So far the only con is I wish the power cord to the controller was removable. That would make it easier to move the bin without dragging along the cord. ... show more

    • Great product with great results until it stops working
This product is great! The reason I give 4 stars because it stop getting to temp at about 3 month of use. Otherwise this product will continuously give you results until the pad fails. Edited: it was the thermostat that stopped working not the pad. I had switched thermostat to another one I had bought and everything seems to be working fine. ... show more

    • Best kept secret for homegrown veggies
This heating mat is a game-changer! I have grow lights for when the seedlings have sprouted but using a heating bad for the seeds helps them progress even faster! I live in AZ so it does get hot here for most of the year, but that means the A/C is on in the house. So, using a heating mat and grow lights makes growing seeds indoors so easy and successful! The thermostat controller works so well and helps me set the temperature for the heating mat so they can thrive. ... show more

    • I guess, it’s a hit and miss!
The product I got was defective. It’s plugged for an hour and it did not produce heat at all. Update after 30mins: I found a way to make this work. The “WORK” light has to be on to start heating up. Follow the instructions, if it does not warm up after 30mins, take the probe and stick it to something cold. I used cold water bottle. This will trigger the thermostat to activate the heating mechanism. So now mine is working! I’m still going to give it 1star though for not explaining how this process works. ... show more

    • Worked great - user interface is crap
I used this are part of a mushroom growing it. It worked great. But it is impossible to figure out what its doing or how to set temperatures. If it literally had three buttons "Display", "up" and "down" I would know how to use it...... but as it is.......... good thing that the current settings were fine. ... show more

Now that the weather has become more inclement, I have set up my seedling environment. I put the heating mat under the tray and it kept the soil comfortable warm. The next day, much to my surprise (and pleasure) there were already quite a few sprouts. Over the course of this past week, I now have close to a hundred seedlings. With this great of a success rate, I probably will end up giving many of them away, since my 10 x 12 green has a somewhat limited capacity (although I keep working on reconfiguring it so that I can maximize how much I can successfully grow in it). ... show more
