  • It only lasted 2 years
Color: Black Style: Solar Floodlight
Update: after writing the review below, Ring customer support reached out to schedule a call. After determining that something was wrong they agreed to send me a replacement. In a little over 24 hrs the replacement showed up. So I guess Iโ€™m good for another 2 years. The motion detection has never been great, but I synced it with a couple motion cameras and it did the job. Until about a month ago it got really dim. Then a couple days ago it would flash twice when it was told to turn on and stay off. The app says itโ€™s health is 100% and fully connected. Even says that it is on after the double flash even when it isnโ€™t. The event history seems accurate. Shame, it should have lasted longer. Iโ€™ll replace with something else, hopefully that something elseโ€™s motion detection wonโ€™t need my cameras. ... show more

  • Great non-hardwired option for those worried about battery life.
Color: White Style: Solar Floodlight
Package and instructions arrived earlier than expected, with easy set-up through the Ring app using the provided QR code. Install was simple enough as well - Ring provides the hardware and a small screw-driver, but I'd recommend a small powered drill/screw driver. Installation took about 15 minutes, including ladder set-up, mounting time, and app programming. The mounting panel can separate from the light, so I'd recommend giving the batteries a little bit of a charge while you install the light mounting plate and solar panel mount, then program the light in the app while you're on the ground. The light then snaps into the mounting plate, and the solar panel snaps into the solar panel mount as well. The solar panel plugs into the bottom of the light via a quite-lengthy cord. We mounted our lights on the East and West sides of our home, into vinyl siding, with the solar panels directly above the lights, facing south for maximum sun in the Northeastern part of the U.S. The screws provided are small enough to not pierce through the home, but threaded properly to grip the vinyl appropriately for mounting. Neither the solar panel nor the lights are very heavy, but secure enough that they hold up nicely with decent wind. The light mount uses three screws (one on the top, two on the bottom) within the square mounting bracket, and the solar panel uses two screws. The solar panel seemed to add about 50% charge during one sunny day, and has kept them from dipping below 80% even after multiple days in a row with clouds and rain. The addition of the solar panel alone is worth the cost of not having to drill more for hard-wiring, or climbing up and down a ladder to replace/recharge batteries. The solar panel still operates and charges the battery, albeit at a lesser rate, even when cloudy. The Ring app allows you to link the lights to other Ring cameras and devices. For instance, if motion is detected on a Ring camera, then the lights can turn on. Conversely, if a light detects motion, then it can prompt a Ring camera to start recording. For those who don't already have Ring products to link to, the lights and solar panel will work as standard motion lights. Light activation can be adjusted for multiple levels of brightness, sensitivity, and "activation time" for 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, and 5 minutes after no longer sensing motion. There does seem to be a couple second delay before the lights turn on after sensing motion. The sensitivity and brightness can be customized (increased or decreased) as needed through the app, and motion alerts can be scheduled to turn off and on using a customizable schedule. The lights can be articulated vertically and horizontally; 90 degrees from center-laterally, and 90 degrees vertically. This means that if it's mounted on a corner, it can't point "behind" the corner. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend if you have a Ring system already, and even if you don't use Ring products it's a good solar option to minimize wiring and battery changes/charging. Like the other review said, if you're on the fence, go for it - it won't add to your electric bill. PROS: - Customizable brightness, schedules, and sensitivity. - Solar panel keeps battery charged throughout the day. - Lighting is adequate for small-medium sized yards. - Install is simple, with good instructions and video (if needed). - Integrates nicely into Ring App with Ring security system and Ring cameras. - Solar panel minimizes hardwiring and/or replacing/recharging batteries CONS: - Ring Lighting Bridge is required (extra $49). - Lights do not articulate 180 degrees vertically and horizontally, reducing options for corners. ... show more

  • Great flood light, but terrible motion sensor.
Color: Black Style: Solar Floodlight
I've had the Solar Floodlight for 3 months and the flood light itself is fantastic putting out bright light on my driveway. I've got the solar panel facing east and it's able to keep the battery charged with no problems. I kind of wish the mounting arm for the solar panel had left to right movement so I could get a better angle, but it's not that big of a deal. I might buy a 2nd battery pack for the winter (the solar floodlight can hold 2 Ring battery packs btw) if the shorter days pose an issue, but I'm probably getting ahead of myself. The app integration when using the Ring Bridge is great. The app allows you to see the battery status and change settings like brightness, or how long the light is on. You can add scheduled on and off times to the light, but I don't use this since I just want it to be a motion light. You can also link the light to other Ring devices to trigger events when the floodlight detects motion like telling a camera to record or to have other lights nearby turn on. This would be great if the thing could consistently detect motion. The motion detector in this light is unreliable most nights and annoying most days. It goes nuts from shadows from a nearby tree during the day and at night it doesn't always detect me when I walk near it, stand under it, or even drive a car past it. Changing the motion sensitivity doesn't affect it at night and it only really changes how crazy it gets with motion detection during the day. You can get around the motion issues by using other Ring products to help with the shortcomings, but it's all pretty expensive when you include buying the Ring Bridge and buying another device to use for better motion detection. If you're just starting out with Ring products, I'd probably skip the solar floodlight until the motion sensor gets improved. EDIT (April 2022) I've had the Solar Floodlight for almost two years now and my review above still holds true. I do have a few other things to add. Every fall when the days start to get shorter and cloudy, the solar panel struggles to keep the battery charged. Eventually the device will begin sending off notifications about the battery running low. The obvious solution would be to add a second battery to the unit so it can stay charged, but the Solar Floodlight can't properly handle two batteries. The app can only show the battery percentage of one of the batteries, so if one battery is fully charged and one is nearly dead you'll either see 100% or 9%. Even worse it will spam you with low battery notifications as it keeps switching back and forth between the two batteries. I had to remove one of the batteries after last year it gave me over 100 low battery notifications in a single day and then it went to 90% and was fine. The motion sensor is still disappointing, but I've narrowed down the issues. The sensor has a short range of about 6ft (1.8m) in the middle while it can see over 15ft (4.5m) out from either side. I don't know why this is, but I bought a Ring Motion sensor and placed it 3ft (<1m) above the ground directly below the floodlight to fill this motion gap. The sensor also can't properly detect motion on very warm nights. Every evening the temperature was above 80F (26.7C) the sensor would have unreliable motion detection. I suspect the sensor isn't sensitive enough to detect body temperature and ambient air temperatures when it gets that hot. On the cooler evenings the sensor worked fine... aside from the short range in the middle of the sensor. My original conclusion is still pretty much the same: If you're just starting out with Ring products, I'd probably skip the Solar Floodlight until the motion sensor AND battery management improve. ... show more

  • Bright
Color: Black Style: Solar Floodlight
I purchased this light for the side of my house. It does the job but the battery dies too fast and the solar is not picking up enough sun to keep it charged. Purchase a extra battery

  • Bright-ish but good camera
Color: White Style: Solar Floodlight
Overall a good little solar camera. Pros: 1. The camera is really good 2. I don't have an outlet near this so solar was great. It is sitting on my fence so this made installation a breeze. Cons: 1. The light is so so -- but I didn't buy it for the light really, I got it so I could see when someone came up my driveway as this is a blindspot on my house. 2. Buy a second battery because after about a month it just seemed to die. A second battery helped a lot. 3. Ring should have a setting for you to say how long to keep the light on. I find it annoying that it turns off really quickly. ... show more

  • Floodlight quit charging after one year
Color: White Style: Solar Floodlight
The floodlight quit charging after one year. I connected a different solar charger which did not work, either. Can I clean the internal contacts or something? Any ideas?
