  • Good Deal for the Price
The main reason I bought this was its low weight. I'm a handicapped senior citizen and I simply can't lift very much and I don't have room to permanently install a drill press so this was ideal for me. This is a bare bones model. The table slides freely up and down the column when the lock is released since there is no rack and pinion to adjust its height. There is no work light. The motor is only 1/3 HP which limits the size of drill bits, hole saws, etc. that can be used. The base is narrow and, if not secured to a bench, is a bit wobbly. The speed reduction pulleys are reinforced plastic. Still, for the price, it's not a bad deal. I added a 120v gooseneck LED work light and wired the power cord into the switch box on the drill press so I wouldn't have to horse around with two power cords (the light has its own power switch). I also bolted the base of the drill press to an oak board so I could put rubber feet under the board to protect any work surface I put the drill press on. This also helps make the drill press more stable. This machine is intended for light work. The 1/3 HP motor limits how large a bit and how hard of material you can work with. The other day, I used a 1" hole saw to cut a hole in a piece of 6061 T6 aluminum. I had to lower the speed to 1100rpm and use a light feed to keep from stalling the motor. Large bits (3/8" up) on aluminum also require a very light feed when breaking through to avoid snagging and stalling the motor. Despite these limitations, it still can get the job done as long as one doesn't try to horse it around Despite its limitations, I (and my old back) have been very happy with this machine. I use it on top of my washing machine. The added height makes it easier to see what I'm doing without killing my back. ... show more

  • Purty good drill press
Needed a drill press but had no room for floor model. This seemed to be one of the better benchtop models, though none made are really great. Works good for drilling small to medium holes; anything very big strains the motor. Wish they would put bigger motors in benchtop models. Just because we need a small drill press doesn't translate into the need for small power. The table would be much better if it had a rack and pinion adjustment instead of just loosening it and pushing it up or down. Can adjust without tools, though. It has a good adjustment of speed ranges. You adjust by moving the belt from pulley to pulley; wish there was more adjustment in the mechanism that takes tension off the belt. Makes it a bit hard to move the belt. Have drilled both wood and metal successfully, doing some jobs I would have hated to try drilling with a portable drill. The chuck seems to have very little runout. It is light enough I can pick it up and move it outside, or could take to a jobsite. Even though it has some flaws, it is about as good as it gets until somebody manufactures something better. I made a block of wood that fits against the ribbed underside of the table. It makes clamping a fence to the table much easier. ... show more

  • Very good small bench press
I was quite impressed with the rugged look of the machine upon opening the box and found it very easy to put together. However when I plugged it in and flipped the on switch the motor sparked and knocked out the GFI. I reset the GFI and tried it several more times with the same result. I was finally able to turn it on without the GFI kicking out but the motor would just hum without turning the spindle. I found that if I gave the spindle or the pulley a spin it would work. I came to the conclusion that the start capacitor was out. Called Rikon and received EXCELLENT service/help. I told Rod at Rikon my problem and Rod determined that yes it was most likely the start capacitor. He told me that Rikon would gladly replace the machine. I said I just wanted a new capacitor and I would replace it myself rather than have to repack everything and send it all back. Instead Rod/Rikon sent me a complete new motor. Its great to know that some companies out there are willing to do what is needed to make a customer happy. For me this was the easiet and best solution, other folks would probably have wanted to send everything back. Its good to know I had a choice. ... show more

  • But so far I am happy with my purchase
I purchased this as a second drill press for use in the house so I wouldn't have to run out to the shop to use my floor model (especially when it's 40 below 0). It met all of my expectations for a drill press in this price category. However, for drilling in light steel bar, it would bog down even with fairly light feed rate but then again I didn't purchase it for heavy use to drill steel anyway.Since I've used it now only for a couple of weeks, I would reserve further judgment for a little longer. But so far I am happy with my purchase. ... show more

  • Just OK
After a great experience with Rikon's 10" band saw, I expected the same quality in this drill press. It makes an "out of balance" noise as it runs which I find quite irritating. The chuck itself seems to be well balanced and runs smoothly so it will work for me. The thin tin cover uses a friction latch and that needed to be bent to even work at all. The friction latch is also very thin and bends easily so to keep it from rattling, it will likely need adjusting regularly until it breaks. Too bad Rikon couldn't have put a better latch on it. Installing the chuck requires hammering it on, as it is a press fit. Installing the lever handle also required a hammer and a precise alignment of a keyway. This drill press will not be easily taken apart again! ... show more

  • Decent drill press
Not a bad drill press. Works and is very affordable for a table top drill press. It does feel slightly under powered but if you slowly drill or bore it will work great. Changing the belt to the different spindle wheels is fairly easy. They should develop a tool to grab or slide the belt from wheel to wheel but I use a screwdriver when it gets tough. Overall not a bad system........the main attraction is the 5 year warranty on Rikon tools! ... show more
