  • Great back-up radio Outstanding customer service.
Style: 2m band
I purchased this radio as a backup radio for EMS use. Programming with the software downloaded from the Retivis website took less than 30 minutes. The programming cable does not come with this radio and must be ordered separately. The radio feels solid and well built. The audio quality on this radio even with the external microphone is fantastic. No crackly tinny sounding speakers here. I have been able to call back to our dispatch from 5 miles away with out issue (175ft tower at base). Battery life has been excellent but I ordered a second battery for this radio. It uses the same as the Ailunce HD1 battery. The battery arrived and appeared to have been used. I contacted Angela in customer support via email and she sent a replacement battery which arrived in about 72 hours. I also received an update email from Angela every day in between. For the price of this radio it is worth a try. I have used it every day since receiving it and it has been problem free. ... show more

  • THE CLAIM THAT THESE RT29 RADIOS ARE "WATERPROOF" IS A JOKE!
Style: 70cm band
After taking a pair of these RT29 radios on a trip to Alaska with my family and getting wet I can assure you these radios ARE NOT WATERPROOF. We went boating on several waterways in Alaska and maybe dropped these radios 4 or 5 times in shallow water for a few seconds and these radios didn't even last half a day. Water must have seeped into the battery compartment and into the circuit board or through the knobs on top, antenna connector or speaker. The radios started acting erratically and finally shorted out. The only thing I can say is that the RT29 has a decent build quality for regular daily use but DO NOT USE THESE NEAR WATER. I am upset that many of these Chinese radios flooding the US market claim to be waterproof but its a complete lie. If you want a truly waterproof radio that can be submerged under water and survive, I recommend the Japanese Yaesu VX-6R. I cannot recommend this RT29 radio to nobody because the waterproof claim is FALSE! Stay away from this radios and save a little more money to get yourself a quality Japanese radio instead. ... show more

  • Very surprising how good these work. Amazing product.
Style: 70cm band
I tested these in my suburban environment and they are loud and clear a mile apart in a thick suburban housing environment. I also drove down a very long street to the base of a mountain which was slightly elevated from the rest of the valley below. My son was using a radio back at the house and I was up the hill. Communication was crystal clear as if we were right next to each other, but we were TEN MILES APART. The elevation provided a better line of sight, and with line of sight these things will just go forever basically. They are fantastic. ... show more

  • These are good for up to 3 miles on flat surface - In Traffic is hit or miss
Style: 70cm band
Had an opportunity to do a road trip with a buddy and these worked out ok. Not sure what to expect, but we were able to communicate in LA area traffic ~1 to 2 miles apart. We would let the person who was in front tell us what they were going past and we'd look at the odometer and rough guess the distance. Semi Trucks seem to cause the most issues in traffic. In flat desert, I'd say maybe 3 miles max while driving and much further if on foot and different elevations than each other. These radios are built well for what they are and what they cost. I was able to re-program these radios for FRS/GMRS I wanted to use and still keeping on the public non-license required channels. Or at least I think I did that correct. Privacy channel is NOT PRIVACY - Communication between radios are heard and others on the same channel are blocked, but everyone can hear what you are saying. When the battery gets low, problems hearing or talking become an issue. The other side will sound faint. Sometimes turning the radio off and on will get you some more time or change to a low channel that uses less power to transmit/receive. These are really useful for spotting and weathered resistant (the model I got is and read the fine print - same model number but slightly different SKU can make the difference between weather resistant and not). If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably get a 50W mobile GMRS radio and antenna and use FRS/GMRS handheld for spotting. HAM radio is probably the correct way to go if you have time to study and take the exam. ... show more

  • These walkie talkies their range is 5.2 mi very clear
Style: 70cm band
The media could not be loaded. The rt29s are a good brand, if you buy them in pair they come with two headsets, if you buy them individually, they do not come with no headsets, these are very powerful walkie talkies I really like them I tested them they're crystal clear and you won't be disappointed.. ... show more

  • Good radio with small flaws
Style: 70cm band
Great radio. Rugged looks and over all nice placement of buttons and dials. Only down side is the belt clip is very flimsy and does not hold up to getting in and out of vehicles.

  • Can’t program
Style: 2m band
Radios are rugged and made for inclement weather. I bought two of them and could not get either of them to program. I kept getting an error “Unable to communicate with radio”. Contacted customer rep with Retevis and tried everything they recommended. They could not solve the problem so I sent both radios back. The RT29 UHF version works like a champ very impressed with that radio but the RT 29 VHF version is a waste of money plus the default frequencies are in the business band not the HAM band which makes it completely impossible to use unless you pay over $400 dollars a year for a business license. ... show more
