  • An awesome very small mobile radio easily reset for use on Ham bands
Style: UV Band
First thing is the programming cable was included and as I understand it the programming cable is included with all new RA-25 radios. Thanks, Retevis! You can enter the mode select menu to change the bands the radio covers by powering the radio on while pressing the V/M button and for the ham bands select the 144-148, 420-450 mode. Now you are ready to download and install the RA-25 customer programming software and driver so you can set the radio up for ham frequencies, offsets, tones and other parameters. Transmitted audio reports were the same as my Kenwood professional (Land Mobile) radios and received audio was clear and crisp. I programmed this radio in just a few minutes and used it on a local repeater to solicit reports and then used it for a trip today to the Hark Fest in Wickenburg. It came with a lighter plug pre-installed on the power cord so with a mag mount antenna I was ready to use it laying on the console of my wife's Explorer taking up very little room. It is small enough to work temporarily or permanently mounted in just about any car. I love this radio. I have come to appreciate Retevis quality after owning a RT3S handheld for several years and this radio is just another example of the extra quality I expect from Retevis. I bought this radio retail from Amazon and bought my RT3S second hand at a garage sale. I have received no compensation for this review. If you need a dual band mobile radio for a small space in your car you should seriously consider this radio. I wish now I would have bought two. ... show more

  • Good but not great radio for GMRS and the 2m/70cm ham bands
Style: GMRS Band
Seems like a good radio so far with almost 25w VHF and over 20w UHF of power and a pretty decent receiver. For some reason it does intermittently key up on it's own when listening to certain people talking like some kind of tones triggering the ptt. Weird I know and I don't know what to do about it. That's why I give it 4 stars. Also the speaker seemed to be rattling and sounded like a feedback issue with the volume up for a noisy environment and I took the cover off where the speaker is and couldn't find a reason for it but it seems to have fixed it when I put it back on. Seems like it is a decent radio for the price with a really good sound both RX and TX. The size is great and easy to put where you want it. I would like to see it as a tri-band radio with the 1.25m band included. The mic cord could be a little longer. Forgot to mention it was very easy to open up the ham bands on this radio. And it can be taken back to the GMRS version just as easy. Just a nice simple radio for GMRS and ham radio use. ... show more

  • Fantastic for the price
Style: GMRS Band
I have to start by saying that I'm a long time ham radio operator and have used several dual band mobile radios in the mostly distant past. I bought this radio hoping to use it on VHF Receive only, and GMRS TX/RX. I struggled with getting the programming to do this as it shows many available memory channels, but no ability to program them outside of GMRS even with TX disabled. Then I found this on a forum which is not mentioned anywhere else: You need to set the radio to the 136-174/430-470 mode (that's widely known on the forums and reviewers). But how to get the non GMRS programming to work? The key is to READ from the radio first, then modify that file which the software allows. Using the supplied code plug when installing the software does not work, must use the code plug read from the radio itself. Now I have it programmed up for GMRS with a bunch of CTCSS codes for privacy, and a bunch of VHF band RX only freqs. Besides that it's a basic dual receive radio that is super small. Audio out is great but I put an external speaker under passenger seat in truck, that's always the best. My only objection so far is that when in keypad/front panel lock mode there is no way to un-squelch to hear how loud the volume is set to. I wish that would work even with keypad/front panel lock turned on. update July 2024: I programmed in the NOAA weather stations and using a run of the mill dual band mag mount antenna. This radio is able to receive NOAA station over 40 miles away and with transmitter not very high. This may not sound like a good feat but is definitely better than my old analog Yeasu HT or Mobile radios. OK, I don't know the real RX sensitivity of this Retivis radio, it's probably only ok frankly, but at least it's not poor as I feared from a SoC radio. This makes is a great radio for the price IMHO. ... show more
