  • Reel Yaks Recon 2 Pc Kayak
Style: Fin Drive
JUST THE FACTS: This is a good product that should be almost 5 stars for the price; The Recon model is by no means 10 and a half foot long foot long ( false advertising). it measures just under 9'10". The rudder does not add any length as it is recessed back under the hull and does not extend past at all. A good design BTW. The rudder install directions were totally wrong that came with the kayak. Caused hours of frustration; Missing wrench for set screws; wrong rudder rope attachment instruction. Finally an email a few days later confirmed new assembly directions were ONLINE; Kayak was well Packaged in a big box. Extra peddle Fins, extra Latch and a nice storage Bag for each of the two halves was a nice touch. Two halves went together very well and a secure latch design is very convenient for easy assembly; Check all fasteners because most were not tightened enough, but remember this is plastic so do don't over do it. (especially the fin drive unit needed tightening); My unit was delivered in two days with a free Ball Cap even; Rudder release is finicky so I sprayed silicone spray on rope wherever possible and it helped a bit. Fin drive propels nicely but needs more travel so Fins can hug the Hull closer for going over logs, rocks etc which pop up unexpectedly. Despite receiving the unit on 6/24/25, I was not able to use it for the July 4th holiday due to the bad assembly manual and missing items. Customer service did respond on Sat. July 5th and was apologetic and professional. Also issued a $100. credit for my trouble, One outing as of 7/6 and all went well. ... show more

I don't know if it will absolutely take the place of physical therapy. I wish everybody to be safe wear your safety gear instead of trouble. ... show more

  • Great Yak.
Style: Fin Drive
Great yak. Goes together well. Stability is great. When putting the rudder system together it is best to get the updated instructions that are online. The instructions given did not match my rudder system. Noting that I'm an older female. The rudder is hard for me to pull up! In the description it says each piece weighs 31 lb. The front piece is a lot lighter than the back. There's no way the back weighs 31 lbs. Feels more like 45 or 50. Though I have not weighed each individual piece. ... show more

  • Rudder installation on Recon Modular Yak
Style: Fin Drive
Well I received my Reel Yak Recon fishing modular kayak' I came in a huge box but in pretty good shape from Amazon. Some body wrote about new instructions for installing the rudder and I looked them up on the internet and printed them. This really helped. It has to do with two white plastic sleeves that go over the rudder post as it comes up from the bottom. Here are a couple of hints for setting the rudder. take the screw out of the rudder cap and then lift it up and follow the instructions for threading the small rope through the hole and out the bottom of the Yak. Now turn the yak on its side and push the rudder throug the hole. Now here is where I did something different. fold the rudder up and lay the yak on the floor bottom down. Now you will see the black rudder post sticking through the hole. It will be real sloppy. Here is where you can push the long white sleeve down on it, then you can wiggle the yak to get the rudder to center up and then slide the short bigger sleeve over the rudder post and the smaller white sleeve. With the yak on the ground and the rudder folded you can now place the rudder cap on the rudder post just like the instructions state. It has up pressuer on the rudder and that allows the plastic x on the rudder post to line up with the rudder cap that has the same grooves in it. you will have to pull slightly toward the rear of the yak with the cap as it is attached to the steering cables. You will feel it slide into the x grooves and then you can screw it down. From here, follow the instructions on the steering arm etc. One note: when you secure the rudder cap, make sure the small rope is to the side of the rudder housing, so the cap will not pinch it . The rest of the build was very easy, and each side weighs approx, 45 lbs. Tighten all screws and becareful of the screws that go directly into the plastic hull. Some bolts have brass inserts and some are just into the plastic and will strip out if over tightened. I tried calling Reel Yaks with a question on adjusting the rudder cables and have not heard from them. I think it is important for them to have a rep answer the phone rather than a voice tilling you to leave a message. This is imperative for good customer support. Cheers, Mark ... show more
