  • Great Yak!
Style: Fin Drive
I’m going to try to make this review as short as I can. I had a top of the line inflatable great yak but bottom punctured way too easily and I ended up blowing out the outer chambers due to air pressure and daily use. Did not want to spend $1000+ on another similar model. I have been researching modular yaks for awhile because I cannot rooftop a kayak due to shoulders and I don’t have a pick up. I also did not want to trailer as I have a boat and trailer already. I decided on REEL YAKS Recon because of width for stability and with the fin drive over the propeller due to fishing mostly skinny weeded waters. The box arrived on time and in good condition. The yak sections come in a great storage bags. The yak went together easily and with use of supplied directions everything went together and functioned properly. I did not receive paddle. Contacted company that evening by email and received a response by 6:45a they are sending one asap. Awesome customer service! Went on water next day for 6 hours I decided to put sections together in water because I could not find a level spot at my launch point. It went together literally 123. Rod holders are good but rods can get in way if you don’t pay attention casting. Seat goes on easily and took the most time. Space inside yak is limited. There are obviously add ons that would help with that but it is roomy cockpit with a cupholder for the kayaker. I boarded the yak seating in from the water good stability no problems. Between me and my gear probably had 250 pounds on board and the yak was still ungrounded in less than 6 inches of water. After launch I checked stability rocking side to side it was a little more play than I anticipated. I was able to stand but it took effort. Once standing you have move back toward joint to be more stable. I was able to cast and fish from this platform but I would not do so in winds more that 6 or 7 miles hour because if it hits a stump your almost sure to get thrown. Definitely won’t be standing in winter waters. Seated I felt safe and balanced. This is a quality yak. The fin drive seems sturdy and is taken in and out very easily. It will give you a workout and I’m still figuring out the proper distance for the pedals. I was able to use the propulsion but the with the wind hard to say if the rudder system is true. Able to get some good speed going. The rudder in hard left and hard right turns this thing nicely as well as making small adjustments while pedaling. Had to take the fins out in shallows and it was easy to do. The yak paddles easier than I anticipated but is a tank. Seat is basic but is comfortable (with a seat pad) after a 6 hour trip. Two issues I had: 1. No paddle/customer service rectified immediately 2. a cover/plug for fin/prop drive access should be standard ... show more

  • Reel Yaks Recon 2 Pc Kayak
Style: Fin Drive
JUST THE FACTS: This is a good product that should be almost 5 stars for the price; The Recon model is by no means 10 and a half foot long foot long ( false advertising). it measures just under 9'10". The rudder does not add any length as it is recessed back under the hull and does not extend past at all. A good design BTW. The rudder install directions were totally wrong that came with the kayak. Caused hours of frustration; Missing wrench for set screws; wrong rudder rope attachment instruction. Finally an email a few days later confirmed new assembly directions were ONLINE; Kayak was well Packaged in a big box. Extra peddle Fins, extra Latch and a nice storage Bag for each of the two halves was a nice touch. Two halves went together very well and a secure latch design is very convenient for easy assembly; Check all fasteners because most were not tightened enough, but remember this is plastic so do don't over do it. (especially the fin drive unit needed tightening); My unit was delivered in two days with a free Ball Cap even; Rudder release is finicky so I sprayed silicone spray on rope wherever possible and it helped a bit. Fin drive propels nicely but needs more travel so Fins can hug the Hull closer for going over logs, rocks etc which pop up unexpectedly. Despite receiving the unit on 6/24/25, I was not able to use it for the July 4th holiday due to the bad assembly manual and missing items. Customer service did respond on Sat. July 5th and was apologetic and professional. Also issued a $100. credit for my trouble, One outing as of 7/6 and all went well. ... show more

  • Great Yak - Easy Transport
Style: Propeller Drive
Great Yak that makes transportation a breeze. Easily fits into my Tesla Y. Snaps together quickly and very sturdy, even standing. Steering needed some adjustment out of the box. Otherwise good to go immediately.

  • Poorly made and assembled= poor overall quality
Style: Fin Drive
The modular aspect is great. Everything else is average or sub par The metal cable that connects to the rudder came loose so now my steering is all messed up and sits to the left more and I have less steering to one way and it’s screwed up going to the other. Then installation for this models rudder was not in the instructions. So I spent 4-5 hours beating myself up trying to figure out how to get it to work. Finally got through to customer service and they said it wasn’t in the initial instructions and included new pieces in the assembly kit, but wasn’t listed. It’s a really cheap idea of putting a PVC pipe around the rudders metal shaft, which makes it incredibly difficult to get the rudder up or down. You have to get out of the kayak to pull it back out. The rudder doesn’t even have an area under the kayak to sit flush with, so it will scrape the bottom and can break. Your rudder will be the ultimate weak point. The thing drives like a tank. It doesn’t cut through the water at all. If you’re looking for a good exercise, this will give one. Don’t bother going out on days over 8mph wind. On a very small reservoir pedaling into the wind to get across is a very tough workout, and in fairly fit. It does seem stable, however I wouldn’t go standing in it. The modular system has held up, then again it’s only been a month. The rod holder that came with it is junk, it can’t even hold a rod in place without falling down. The seat just sits on top of the railing. Meaning when I try to sit up and readjust myself the seat slams backwards and now I’m out of position. Which is practically impossible to adjust the seat while on the water. You have to get on land to readjust. This thing was poorly thought out and thrown to the market. Save your 2k and spend an additional 1-2 more and go with what’s trending. I regret spending the money on this. ... show more
