What matters even more than decibels is how the sound breaks when blown by a real person. Our whistles are tuned to sound raw like a scream, not flat like a train whistle. How do you use a Death Whistle by Itzcoehua correctly? The Death Whistle is a musical instrument. Using it is easy, but technique matters. Place your mouth fully around the mouthpiece and blow long and strong — not short bursts. A steady strong blow for 3–5 seconds allows the scream to fully form. I’ve seen an occassional mixed reviews. I had wanted a real Aztec Death Whistle for a long time, but I kept putting it off because I thought it was a bit expensive. I finally bought it when I found it on sale, and honestly, I’m so glad I did — this thing is incredibly fun. I had seen a lot of videos on TikTok, but hearing it in person is a completely different experience. The sound is genuinely scary. If you enjoy scaring people (and being scared yourself), this absolutely delivers. At first, I was slightly underwhelmed, but then I realized there’s a real learning curve. You have to learn how to blow into it properly — how much pressure to use, whether to blow hard right away or start softly and build up gradually. Once you get the hang of it, the scream becomes truly unsettling. The scare it produces is very different from a normal jump scare. It doesn’t sound human in a familiar way — it’s more like a horrifying wail, as if something really bad is happening. That’s what makes it so effective. When someone hears it, they don’t immediately process it as a joke. It freezes you for a moment, completely disoriented, with chills down your spine. And then, a second later, you end up laughing. I bought it mainly to scare my family, and it worked a little too well — I ended up getting scared myself plenty of times too. Yes, it’s a bit pricey, so I’d recommend it if you have the extra money and enjoy this kind of thing. The quality is excellent. It looks and feels like an old stone artifact, and honestly, it even works as a cool decorative object around the house. Over 50 years of travelling the world, I have made kind of a hobby of picking up little statuettes and carvings; deities, demons, odd folklore pieces, various animals, miniature copies of famous statues, all handmade by local people. I have many of them. So while I have never seen something like this in Mexico and have never been to Colombia, thought this would be a cool thing to add to the collection. I chose this one because it is produced by hand unlike cheaper (made in China) models, it is heavy and well made. The sound is kind of a dual "howling wind" and a horror movie background sound like you might hear in "The Ring" or "The Grudge" or something. You can alter the sound with your hand in front as sort of a baffle. Difficult to describe. Real historical death whistles have two chambers inside, a small and a large one to produce a high and low pitch at the same time, and I think this may have that. It doesn't really sound like a human scream to me, but it's definately creepy and loud. If you give this to a kid you had better have some headache medicine nearby. I'll probably never blow it again unless someone wants to hear what it sounds like. The dogs absolutely hate it. Just got it for more of a display/conversation piece. I have it displayed on the cloth with the Aztec design it came with. It looks exactly like the pictures, with a texture like it was carved from pumice (volcanic stone). OK. This is just stupidly awesome. I bought this because it looked cool but I didn’t expect it to be nearly as fun as it actually is. The sound it makes is absolutely horrifying. Just be careful. On the first try, I was indoors and almost ended up getting a divorce. The second try, I did with the back door open, and my neighbor came running asking if my child was injured. It is the most haunting and horrifying sound I could possibly imagine and it’s amazing. Also, the object itself is beautiful, and it comes with a legitimately cool looking tiny tapestry as a wrapper. Also, if you’re nerd like me, open the box really carefully and keep the label in your sticker collection because it is a super cool design. Anyway, as you might imagine based on the proceeding wave of compliments, I am absolutely enthralled and completely thrilled with this spooky, crazy, beautiful little piece of haunted awesomeness. ... show more

I can imagine camping and hearing a noise like this out in the wild and be terrified! I’ve used this many time with friends and family and it’s amazing! It’s sounds like a scream but not a human one. The Aztec look adds to the mystery too. The mouthpiece is very smooth compared to the rest of the gadget, which I’m very thankful for! Blowing it is scary, but cupping your hand on the bottom produces a different tone a# well (think of a harmonica). Super fun and it engages a lot of fun discussions afterwards. The size is small but can’t fit in normal pockets of pants, shorts, spandex, etc… could easily fit (hidden) in a hoodie pouch though. ... show more
