First, forget about the lightng for a moment. TLDR: OUTSTANDING! The most sensitive, response-inducing gaming mat I have used during 20 years of hard-core gaming. Kudos to Razer! I am a former anti-Razer gamer. I have been a hard-core gamer for over twenty years and have tried more supposedly high-performance hard and soft gaming mouse pads than Fido has Pups, and this Razer Firefly is without question the finest quality gaming mat by far that I have ever used. It's smooth yet has just a touch of traction that doesn't miss the slightest movement of your mouse. It does not slip on your desk or table, It is also very nicely sized and slim. I don't know what more you can say about a gaming mouse pad than it has a great feel,extreme responsiveness, sits firmly on your desk, and is perfectly sized and slim. Just by holding it you can tell that it's build qauality and materials are of extremely high quality. About the LCDs :-) Ok, I admit it, I thought the lights looked cool and they admitedly influenced my purchasing decision. But I had no idea how much nicer a black mouse pad with a ring of colored LCDs, if I chose to use them would appear on my desk. I use a Logitech G910 Orion Spark with backlit keys of any color you choose pluse a variety of changing multicolored patterned keyboard displays, a Roccat Kone XTD with a moving multi line of color-changing LCDs on each side. I now see how unnattractive a plain colored black mat appeared next to them. Now I sometimes find myself turning on a multicolored changing screen saver, turn on the multi-colored moving rainbow display on my keyboard, mouse, and Razer Flyer, throw in a touch of music and chill in a mesmerizing trance state:-) So much the better if your keyboard is also a Razer and you can synch the colors through Razer's Synapse. Downloading Razer Synapse from the Razer website is not required. Without Synapse it is strictly plug and play and displays a slowly changing colored boarder. I purchased this mousepad at a discounted price during a sale on Amazon as a replacement for a 5 year old mousepad i had bought and i am sure glad i did! I bought this to pair with a new rgb mecahnical keyboard made by logitech and im glad these two brands mix very well color and light intensity wise. It is very nice to have that nice accent light around the rim when i am working in the dark. Although during day time its a little bit distracting while im working. But its very cool to plug and play this pad. If you do want the options for different lights you will have to download the computer app. The app is a little hard to use at first but after a few minutes of playing around and a youtube video or two you can figure it out, but i wouldnt say its super easy to navigate. I would say the mousepad is quite smooth and does have a nice texture for most users as i would say its more tactile that most so you can really feel the mouse movements. It isn't the smoothest mousepad which is what i was looking for. it works for me because i wanna feel some resistance in my mouse movements. Originally purchased to compliment my new wireless Razer Mamba I had initially balked spending $50 on a mouse pad since I had no defined need in terms of tracking issues on me computer desk surface with any mice I owned so far. As soon as I had unboxed and plugged it in, I have quickly learned to appreciate what it has to offer, not to mention the cool lightning effects governed by Razer's Synapse Cloud-based peripheral control suite available for free in both Windows and Mac versions (unlike most other competing offering from Corsair, etc.). Pairing it with the new Razer Mamba Chroma wireless mouse as well as Razer's new Chroma mechanical keyboard is an amazing combo in both hardware quality, design and implementation. The aforementioned software can be programmed with the same utility and relative ease. Not only that but if you have multiple sets of these peripherals like me (at work and at home), the cloud-based Synapse 2.x utility will keep your profiles synced in the background, which is a very cool feature. For example, all three peripherals including the pad can be synced up to cycle in the same color combination or pattern enhancing the overall WOW factor to anyone who sees it. The mousepad is made of sturdy plastic that has a premium feel. The Synapse utility has a built-in profile for calibrating the mouse for this particular pad automatically with a single click; and the generous size of the pad will satisfy most extreme use-case scenarios I can envision.
