  • A pump sprayer with both quality and listing issues.
Size: 1 gal
[ SEE UPDATES BELOW ] SUMMARY: (i) unclear warranty terms; (ii) assembly and operating instructions need improvement; (iii) nozzle spray extremely difficult to adjust. REVIEW This is a manual pump sprayer made in China having the same design as pump sprayers sold by traders in Chinese on-line wholesale markets, and sold in Amazon by Sunlight Supply Inc (a wholesale distributor based in Vancouver, WA) or through its dealers under the label RainMaker. 1. It is a lightweight sprayer (2.6 lb for the 1-gallon model; 3.7 and 4.6 lb for the 2- and 3-gallon models) made of polyethylene, a soft hose, an adjustable shoulder strap, and a handy pressure-release valve. Unlike the 5-gallon model, which includes batteries, its operation is only manual. 2. The assembly and operating instructions are described in a seven-page booklet written in English. There is a number of issues about these instructions, particularly for inexperienced users. (A) ASSEMBLY (booklet p.3) -- First, although the manual shows the (3-piece) nozzle already attached to one end of the wand shaft, that was not true in the unit received. To attach the shaft [Fig.1A] to the nozzle, first loosen its rear nut [Fig.1C], insert one end of the shaft into the nozzle piece, and then tighten the nut again. (Note: In my unit, there is a small gap between the tightened rear nut of the nozzle and its fixed middle piece shown by an arrow in Fig.1; so far, it does not seem to affect the sprayer function.) After doing this, attach the other end of the wand to the handle as described in the manual by using the front nut of the handle [Fig.1B]. Keep in mind this nut does not totally secure the shaft to the handle, so the shaft may slip out if not properly inserted in the handle assemblage or if pushed away by the cumulative pressure of the liquid being sprayed. Second, make sure the rear nut of the handle [Fig.1D] is properly tightened. In the unit I received, it was very loose; this creates a risk of body contamination if the pump were to be pressurized for the first time while using noxious chemicals. Third, do not meddle with the small grey nut opposite to the blue trigger lever [Fig.1F]. Unidentified in the manual, this nut holds in place the trigger's spring mechanism; in case such mechanism were in need of cleaning or lubrication, it can be accessed by unscrewing the long blue part of the handle from the short grey part containing the trigger. (B) FILLING THE TANK (booklet p.3) -- First, the warning about releasing pressure with the release valve lacks information on how to operate the valve (which is only described later in p. 5 of the booklet): to release pressure, pull UP the red top of the valve (do not push sideways, as it can be done with some other release valves). Second, when replacing sprayer contents avoid over-tightening the blue pump-handle assemblage. It can become too hard to unscrew later for washing or refilling the pump, and the unit does not offer a good holding point. If too tight, avoid holding the sprayer from the release valve or the connector to the hose; use instead the two shoulder straps wrapped around your hand. (C) SPRAYING (booklet p.4) -- Before pressuring, make sure the front nozzle nut [Fig.1E], which adjusts the jet pattern, can be turned. It was so tight in the unit I received that it was impossible to turn it by hand, even when using rubber pad grippers (pliers were avoided as they would mar the plastic). This nut had to be soaked in very hot water for several minutes to be loosened by hand. 3. The length of the nozzle wand is 12 in.(30.5 cm) and that of the hose connecting the pump to the trigger is 51 in.(130 cm). This hose is very flexible and can be wrapped conveniently around the neck of the pump during storage [Fig. 2]. 4. According to the box in which it arrived, the sprayer carries a "1-year warranty" but no details are given. Further, neither the website of RainMaker <rainmakersprayers[dot]com> nor that of Sunlight Supply <sunlightsupply[dot]com> –probably the actual owner of RainMaker– provide information about warranties. In case you need to contact the seller, the RainMaker site provides a page-based contact but no phone number or address. Sunlight Supply's toll free phone is 888-478-6544. 5. Finally, there is something odd about this listing. Currently it can be purchased as a new item from a number of Amazon sellers (see the link "other sellers" or "[...] new from" in Rainmaker Pump Sprayer, 1-Gallon ), which include Sunlight Supply itself operating as a direct seller through its Amazon Store storefront page. The "Sunlight Supply Store Returns & Exchanges" link of such page leads to the warning that their store sells "overstock, discontinued, obsolete, scratch & dent and factory refurbished products directly to retail consumers at significant discounts [...]. First quality & current model products are sold only through our Authorized Retail Dealers. Because this is a warehouse clearance store, all purchases are final. No returns will be accepted." This is very TROUBLESOME for two reasons. One is that the warning is incompatible with their offer to sell the sprayer as a "new" product. The other is that their storefront link for the sprayer takes the customer to the Amazon page with other sellers who do not say they are selling a depreciated item. Now, either the warning is true, which means that an unaware customer ordering from this webpage could end up getting an obsolete, discontinued, or refurbished item instead of a true new one depending on the seller he or she selects, or it is false, which means returns ought to be accepted. This byzantine approach ought to be made more transparent by Amazon. UPDATE June 2016 After a month of use, the front nozzle nut [Fig.1E] continues to be extremely hard to turn. I do not have weak hands, but adjusting the spray pattern requires a pair of pliers in one hand while holding the nozzle assembly with the other hand (as otherwise the nozzle assembly rotates). The nozzle design is quite poor –– the device provides a liquid jet for most of the available turning range of the nut until it abruptly switches to a short-range, mist-like spray. It takes a number of attempts using tiny turns of the nut to achieve an actual spray with a relatively acceptable degree of coverage. A fine adjustment is essentially impossible. Those spraying noxious substances (e.g., insecticides) ought to pre-adjust the spray pattern using only water, and not change it during the spraying to avoid contamination of the hands. Also, the pump handle does not lock well into the retaining ring and it can abruptly disengage when carrying the pump from this handle. I have reduced the rating from 3 to 2 stars because of these issues. UPDATE April 2017 After a winter season of storage (with all tightening parts loose), the pump sprayer works with the same front nozzle difficulties as of last year; now it has its own dedicated pair of pliers for adjusting the nozzle nut to avoid contamination of the house tools when using spraying chemicals. ... show more

  • Indoor plant game changer!!!
Size: 3 gal
This super easy-to-use sprayer has made me better in every way. No kidding. It's silly I even debated something that makes me better, faster, taller, hidden (stealthier), and cleaner. My plants are happier because I water them easier, with a variable nozzle and long wand. My husband is happier because I don't have to move a ladder all over the house, and run back and forth from the faucet (obviously spilling sometimes.) My animals are happier for the same reasons, and I have more time with them. One tank fill would be difficult to lug around, but do-able. It's easier for me to fill 1/2 to 2/3rds full & prime the top with more pressure. This results in less-frequent pumping. Don't let this just sit in your cart the way I did. Orrrrrr, BUY IT FOR YOUR FRIENDS. ... show more

  • Used For Sprying Permethrin
Size: 1/2 gal
I use this for spraying permethrin in my chicken coops. I like that it comes out in a pretty good mist so I can spray directly on the birds on their behinds and under their wings without getting them super wet. Some sprayers that send out too big of particles makes it feel like I'm hitting them with a sprinkler and they respond accordingly. But with this one they don't freak out and it allows me to go spray everybody down in the dark in the coop. ... show more
