  • Melodies: Improved. Lights: Awesome. The future is now.
...Im taking a quick break from playing, because I feel compelled to let producers / musicians know. The Future: This keyboard is revolutionary. Im the picky type about keybeds, the action & feel of the keys when Im playing synths. My midi boards must have very playable, expressive feel and high build quality. I dont like clanky, cheap, noisy distracting keys of most brands. Compositions: Very responsive playing, the layout allows for playing quicker, thus laying ideas down faster. 1st thing I noticed when playing on this, my melodies come out quicker and honestly better than before. Its a new and inspiring way of playing, its look, a refreshing change from centuries of traditional black and ivory. My theory is, the pad layout and velocity allow my brain to react quicker, like drum style, to where Im going next. It just feels so much quicker to get ideas out versus regular keys. Aesthetics: The lights are beautiful. In my dim studio, each note lights my fingertips with each touch, as if the pad light & sound are an extension of your hand. An amazing experience. Ive been playing keyboards since the digital 80s, the QuNexus has so much charm and fun factor in its aesthetics and ease of playability. Solo or chords, the compact size and pad layout didnt negatively effect my playing at all, it feels more like my brain, fingers and the pads are one. The build is solid, has a non-slip, no fingerprints, slightly rubber touch that feels right. Improvements: The octave shift key blinks when set - or +, at a rate that conflicts with the bpm of your song project. Not a big deal, its all mental, but can be distracting when youre locked into a session. Id like to see a 37 key version, to have more range playing bass solo with left, and chords/melodies on the right. I can do this on the 25, but I would like to go an octave deeper for the bass, but that's nothing but a quick midi nudge in my daw, done. Final Word: Great for travel or studio. USB, MIDI, CV, they left no electronic musician out of the loop, everyone can join in. Almost speechless about the emotional connection I feel when playing this. It feels futuristic, has a Tron / Blade Runner personality, like a tech toy, but its no gimmick. Playing on this feels awesome. Its an interactive playing performance Ive never felt before. I love it. I demo'd keys and playing feel of a few other compact boards @GC, but no dice. I decided to wait, and Im glad I did. The QuNexus arrival has changed my entire perspective, I honestly can't go back to full size synth keys after playing on this. Congrats Mr. McMillen & Co. This is the best compact midi keyboard. ... show more

  • Even just playing a scale sounds awful as it will sound like you are slamming down on some of the keys ...
I was highly optimistic when I purchased this keyboard. I've now owned it for about six months, and I would have given it a 4 star rating initially but now its drawback has become a real pain: As other users have mentioned, the velocity pressure sensitivity varies wildly between keys. Do not purchase this if you are intending on recording melodic parts with any kind of expressive control. Even just playing a scale sounds awful as it will sound like you are slamming down on some of the keys and barely touching others. The software allows for some calibration, but even doing the MAXIMUM level of compensation for the sensitivity difference does not cut it. Now for the positive: besides this velocity problem, it looks amazing, feels amazing to play (drums are less of an issue velocity-wise) and at least has the illusion of being a quality piece of gear. The reason why I'm giving this unit 1 star is because it sells itself for the expressive freedom and versatility it has. If it were just another cheapo micro midi key unit I wouldn't hold it to this standard, but the reason why I paid twice as much for this as I could have for one of those was it's purported expressive "control." it's basically unusable in a serious way. If it weren't for that one issue I would have given it 5 stars, but by the looks of it the company has made no effort to fix or even respond to this issue. ... show more

  • Only real benefit is if you need a controller this small
I've had this for a year now and it's just not really that great. The best way to think of it is exactly what it looks like... a very small rectangle with two octaves of on/off softkeys. If that's what you need, this will work fine. None of the other features (bend, velocity) really work all that well. I'm planning to replace it with a Novation Launchkey. ... show more

  • W O W - why did I wait? - revised
I would like to say that I have been playing synthesizer for around 25 years and recently am nuts about the awesome run IOS has been having with amazing sounding pro quality synths and keyboards. I also confess to loving my Korg Kontrol 49 A LOT. BUT for these iPad synths, I tried MANY - Korg 25 key USB white bugga..., Akai LPK (broke 2 USB ports), Akai mpk mini - still using but afraid of that USB port. The Korg Kontrol is just all aroiund playable and great but the mini 25, I cannot get A lot of groove out of it and its CLACKY to play especially FAST. THE QENEXUS ! Now this thing just is the best mini controller in the land FOR ME. I plugged into iPad mini cam connect kit with supplied USB MINI (not micro and nice angle cord supplied!) launched DXI FM synth. Worked immediately and SOOOO responsive - lightning quick latency! Quit DXI launched IMS20 and man this controller RIPS. WTF I been holding off for?! Launched Cassini and played 2 hours just stopped to rave about QUNEO - I love this controller. Yes it's mini but WAY MORE PLAYABLE than the microkontrol and the Akai mini USB controllers. For full size I still like my Korg Kontrol 49 but really I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD ABOUT QUNEXUS. IT IS badass. I haven't even figured it out yet except the key hold and the pitch control nub that you rock left and right. Great! I'm gonna get deep into this and figure out the key rocking sending to cutoff or yeah... GET THIS NOW. IT'S BUILT WAY STURDIER and rubber coated. Loving it. 9/19/13 additional review of Qunexus - still haven't got a bad thing to say about this. Granted, I have not plugged it into my compute which shall be a MacBook Pro (older 2.6) running Reason 7 primarily and an iMac 3.6 also reason 7 but anticipate no problems. I am adding to my original review to FURTHER express my love for this controller and would like to make a statement regarding the latency. Any of you keyboard players out there remember the Hohner Clavinet D6? Remember how you could turn up the amps and REALLY lightly play the D6 with short staccato almost paradiddel RLRRLRLL rythm? Well the Qunexus is this responsive. AND I LOVE IT. I hope it really is as durable as all those tests on their site show - moreso I just hope long life. Back to the Clavi thing - you know how the rythmic subtleties can be brought out with a light touch and good chord inversion? The Qunexus really does a great job on ALL velocity ranges it seems. This thing is so expressive just on SUNRIZER that I am just loving it so I'm just writing to say THANKS KEITH AND COMpany. Great job. This is probably my favorite controller (just like Ill Gates said!) ... show more
