  • My thumbs are bleeding, my marriage is on the rocks, and I just crashed a $12 million lander!
Color: Lunar Lander
Let’s get one thing straight: I am a grown adult with a mortgage, a 401k, and lower back pain. Yet, here I am, hunkered over a meticulously detailed, 1/4-scale replica of a 1979 Atari cabinet, sweating through my shirt while trying to gently nudge a digital thruster with a lever designed for a GI Joe. And I have never been happier! This thing is a masterpiece of vector-graphic nostalgia. Quarter Arcades didn't just make a toy; they built a shrinking machine. The thrust lever is a literal mechanical masterpiece. It feels so premium that I caught myself trying to use it to adjust the thermostat in my house. It has just the right amount of resistance to make you believe you are an actual Apollo-era astronaut, right up until the moment you panic and blast yourself into deep space. They put a curved lens over the screen to mimic the old vector monitors. It looks brilliant. It gives you that authentic 1979 eye-strain that you just can't get from a modern smartphone. It’s big enough that you can actually play it without needing micro-surgery tools, but small enough that my spouse didn’t immediately notice I spent triple digits on a machine that plays one game from before the fall of the Berlin Wall. If you have never played Lunar Lander, let me summarize the gameplay loop for you: Spawn. Appreciate the beautiful retro lines. Gently apply thrust. Panic because you're moving too fast. Apply maximum thrust. Run out of fuel. Watch your tiny digital astronauts vaporize into a jagged vector mountain line at 400 mph. The original arcade ROM is completely intact here, meaning the difficulty has not been modernized. It still possesses that unique, late-70s arcade programming logic designed specifically to steal quarters from teenagers. Except now, it’s not stealing my quarters; it's stealing my self-esteem. The rechargeable battery means I can now crash lunar modules on the kitchen counter, on the nightstand, or while hiding in the bathroom from my responsibilities. It is a beautifully constructed piece of hyper-specific retro nerddom. If you want to feel the sheer, unadulterated tension of trying to land a blocky spaceship on a 4x multiplier ledge while your fuel gauge screams at you in silent vector text, buy this immediately! ... show more

  • A great addition to a video game fan’s room
Color: Burger Time
Very satisfied with this BurgerTime Quarter Arcades machine! Everything from the solid wood cabinet base to the detailed display panel, marquee and control panel with a feel that is like an arcade cabinet back in the ‘80s. The control is just like the arcade version, the onboard joystick and buttons work well, and the sounds are quite close to the original arcade ROM. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who loves classic arcade video games, and has some shelf space they want to decorate their room with. Superb craftsmanship! ... show more

  • Horrible build quality
Update to add: I recently also bought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It arrived with a damaged LCD panel that has ugly horizontal lines. And it's out of stock so I can't even return it for a replacement. I have zero faith in Numskull any more. I bought the Dig Dug cabinet. When it arrived, I immediately knew something was wrong since I could hear something rattling around inside the cabinet. When I plugged it in, I was able to turn on the game and play, but the charging LED alternated flashing red and green and it didn't seem to be charging. I took off the back panel and found the source of both the rattling and the charging problem: a plastic bracket that is supposed to secure the internal battery was never installed! So both the loose bracket and the battery (which had come loose from the circuit board) were just ratting around inside. There were drill holes where the bracket was supposed to be screwed in, but no screws (not even loose ones), so it was obviously shipped that way from the factory. I found some suitable screws to secure the bracket myself and plugged the battery back in and it seems to be working now, but what a hassle! Manufacturing QA failure aside, the design of the controls seems pretty flimsy. The joystick is a cheap-feeling stick of plastic that clicks loudly when moved. Input is laggy and inaccurate. Compared to the much better-quality New Wave Toys mini arcade cabinets, this one from Numskull feels like a toy. Having said that, the cabinet does look nice and the speakers have good volume. It'll make a nice display piece now that I finished building it for the factory, but I don't think it'll stand up to much playtime. ... show more

  • Worth every penny
Color: Burger Time
Great 1:6 scale reproduction of the classic Burger Time arcade game. It is excellent quality, made from wood and metal and some plastic. Everything that was on the original cabinet is on this replica and it plays the actual arcade ROM so it's arcade perfect! I'm waiting for the price to drop so I can grab Elevator Action too! ... show more

  • Joystick reactivity, accuracy of character movement
Color: Burger Time
I bought the Zoo Keeper Quartercade several months ago and, while I love it for the most part, the accuracy of the joystick isn't quite as flexible as I would like. Burger Time was going to be my second purchase, but I hesitated for a while, given the challenging precision the game/rom notoriously requires in terms of the character navigation. My concern was entirely unjustified - if anything, the fluidity of the Quartercade joystick actually far exceeds ANY other version of the game I have ever played. I love it, and would highly recommend this unit. This is the best realization of the game since its original arcade days. ... show more

  • Tiny but mighty!
Color: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Will absolutely bring back nostalgic memories and is the real, full arcade game in tiny form. And I’m not saying it’s wrong on the claimed size/scale, but to me it seems more like 1/8th scale in comparison to the full size one. But it’s still worth it if you loved this game as a kid, and when powered on and all lit up, it’s very cool. ... show more
