  • Upgrade migration is not as easy as QNAP leads you to believe
Style: 2-bay 4GB RAM Size: NAS
Where do I begin. The upgrade migration from an older QNAP NAS 269-Pro to this newer QNAP 253D model was not as easy as QNAP advises on their migration website. Moving the physical drives was the ONLY easy part. They imply in their migration page that mosr of your settings will be preserved. 'NOT'! First, after turning on the new NAS with the previous QNAP NAS drives installed, the new QNAP did not keep the network settings at all. They do mention this on their migration website so I did write down my network settings of the old QNAP NAS. I simply found the IP of the new QNAP NAS on my router so I could connect to the GUI since I didn't have the Qfinder app installed at the time. I then had to manually FULLY reconfigure the network interfaces to the previous trunking mode and setup the static IP address I had configured on the previous QNAP NAS. Second, they didn't mention this on their migration website that the NAS will not have any shares available at all 'IF'. At first I thought I had lost everything. It took me quite a few minutes clicking around in the QNAP GUI to finally notice that the volume was 'locked' and so it wasn't mounted which causes all the file shares not to mount (very scary time). What they did not mention is the fact that if you have drive encryption enabled, that will cause the volume not to mount after the migration. After I entered the encryption password, it unlocked the volume and the file shares were mounted and available. WHEW!!! Then I noticed I didn't have any backup app/routines at all that where on the previous QNAP NAS. If they are not going to support the legacy backup station app in the new QTS versions, then they should have at least automatically installed the new hybrid backup sync app. It took me some time to figure this out and install the new hybrid backup sync app, and after I did, at least it read the previous backup station app configuration since all of my backup routines showed up in this new app. However, that wasn't the end of it since this new QNAP NAS mounted the external USB backup drive differently. So, I had to redo every backup sync routine that I had configured because the USB drive folder path was different. QNAP needs to put a more information on their migration page because this could have went a lot more smoothly for me if they would have at least informed me about these frustrating migration effort items. Finally, I might not have even upgraded to this new QNAP if I'd known that QNAP no longer supports a MAJOR feature I was using on my previous QNAP NAS. You'd think a newer model would have more features and not loose any. Well, it seems that QNAP is no longer an ECO friendly company!!! This QNAP NAS does not have the sleep/standby power feature available at all so they expect this NAS to stay ON all the time and hopefully the drives might spin down after 30 minutes of inactivity in standby mode (what a joke!). The only other option is to turn the NAS completely OFF, BUT IT TAKES WAY TOO LONG FOR IT TO BOOT BACK UP so that's not really a usable option. If they bring back the sleep/standby power option and become an ECO friendly company again, then I would give this review a star back. I found a thread about a sleep script, but I'd much rather the QNAP support this feature natively like they did in the older QNAP devices. On a positive note, because this QNAP NAS has a better processor and more memory than my older QNAP NAS, at least the performance of file transfers are much better. I'm getting about 30Mbps faster sustained transfer speeds using the same network setup and source computer. ... show more

  • Did exactly what I wanted with minimal set up
Style: 4-bay 4GB RAM Size: NAS
I needed a Plex server and after doing some reading this seemed like the best mid range server for the job. I got the 4 internal drive version. It also has 5 USB ports for adding externals or anything else you'd want cause that's plenty. And it also has an HDMI port if you want to get into that. Great server for the money. Had zero problems with setup. ... show more

  • My First QNAP
Style: 6-bay 4GB RAM Size: NAS
I had been looking to upgrade from my WDPR4011 to something with more bays. Didn't need it, but wanted more bays. I saw this TS653D on sale for the same price I bought my 4 bay WD. Plus it has Intel for transcoding. Since the WD had 4 bays, I bought two more drives, and configured as Raid 5 like the WD. I left three drives in each boxI then dragged and dropped my files from the WD into the Qnap. I was asleep and at work, while the files transferred in the background. Now I can use the WD as backup or whatever and populate the Qnap with six drives like I wanted. I like also that a keyboard, mouse and monitor (hdmi) can be connected along. My Qnap came with 4GB ram but was easy to raise to 8. Only a month in, but I'm happy so far/right now.....we'll see! ... show more

  • No customer service….Networking Speed Slow
Style: 2-bay 4GB RAM Size: NAS
Box is nice. As is firmware and chipset. For some reason, this unit will not provide more than 12mb network speed. Customer service will not follow up with me, and Qnap chat boards have mocked those with similar products. I really wanted to like this.

  • Worth every cent!
Style: 4-bay 4GB RAM Size: NAS
I have a few NASs (mostly for work). But this one was the easiest to setup and start running. It has easy access to load the drives, unlike so others that you have to tear them apart just to add a drive. And the software allows you to add programs easily. It is supper quite and sometimes you don't know that its even working. Would I recommend it? Most definitely Yes! ... show more

  • Great price for feature set from a NAS
Style: 4-bay 4GB RAM Size: NAS
I have a few of this particular model of NAS running in home and small biz environments. Great feature set for the price with the given alternative options out there. Would still highly consider this NAS to date.

  • Forget using QNAP Tech Support!
Style: 2-bay 4GB RAM Size: NAS
Emailing questions to QNAP Tech Support is a waste of time, in my opinion and experience. Their technical documentation explaining how their NAS OS is laid out, installed, how to access, how to modify, hidden partitions, how to add APPS to, in the words of Malaysian comedian Ronny Chieng: Sucks! The base scenario of usage for documentation examples should FOCUS on stand-alone private-class C local network operation & configurations targeted to promote such FOCUS, not the user beat-down with multiple NAS ops, Remote Connections, Internet access & and other Enterprise facets. Most Enterprises would choose a more robust model to invest in. Their Business Support was great! Shout Out to Roger Gonzales with Qnap in Pomona CA 91768 for his excellent business support during my purchasing of this product. The hardware I purchased, NAS TD-253D is SOLID, low powered and responsive. Has SAMBA server built-in for file sharing with Linux, Windows, Apple & NFS clients. This is a great NAS! Packed it with 2-16TB Seagate SATA III hard drives Raid 1 setup, 12GB RAM. Easy to establish dual Gb/s NIC teaming to double bandwidth, not speed, to and from the unit. OS & App software updates are very timely and so far have occurred without any issues I am aware of as of 15 Dec 21. I purchased the extended warranty out to 5 years from standard 3 years for only $99 US. Both Drives & NAS are now covered for 5 years. As long as you can handle discovering how to use the unit without Tech Support, I recommend this unit for home, or small business. If all else fails, it is easy to grab and save in case of disaster striking. Steven F. Sutherland. ... show more
