Description

The PRS HDRX 20 captures the flexibility, power, and balance of late 60’s British-inspired tone in a lower wattage package. The PRS HDRX 20 features a newly-documented “Authentic Hendrix” Touring Circuit. This circuit is heavily inspired by one of Hendrix’s personal amps, purportedly used at Woodstock, which Paul Reed Smith and PRS Amp Designer Doug Sewell were able to study in 2018. Designed to push the high-end so it is very clear, but not so much that it’s harsh, the PRS HDRX shines without glaring and allows for aggression that can be backed off for smooth, sweet tones. The PRS HDRX 20 is driven by two 5881 power tubes. Chosen for their lower power, smaller size, and organic voice, the 5881 tubes bring thick but articulate tone that drives well and breaks up beautifully in this lower-wattage amp. The PRS HDRX 20 features a 3-band TMB tone stack, 2-way bright switch, high-mid gain switch, and presence controls. These features mirror the historic amp and give players flexibility and increased control of their tone. The PRS HDRX 20 is also designed with internally bridged channels with individual treble and bass volume controls. This eliminates the need for a jumper cable (historically used on the outside of the amp) and allows players to dial in their distortion level and tone more easily by blending the lead and bass channels’ individual volume controls, bringing more modern convenience to the amp. The addition of a Master Volume control on the HDRX 20, a new feature for HDRX amps, is another modern convenience. Players can use the Master Volume to control the power amp section of the HDRX, making it more user friendly for players who do not want to add a volume attenuator to their setup.

  • fabulous tone, quality build at a reasonable price
This amplifier got my attention when I read that PRS had access to a Marshall amp that Jimi Hendrix "modified" and brought to the Woodstock festival. . My curiosity got to me after reading about how the PRS folks reverse engineered Hendrix's Marshall amp using his actual amp and built three"HDRX" models- USA built 50 watt and 100 watt priced at around $3000 and a 20 watt model built in Indonesia.. for a fraction of the price. The 50 watt and 100 watt amps are too powerful for where I play but the 20 Watt is right up my alley. I have more than a couple amps but typically play with a small (15-20 watt) Fender '65 Princeton reissue or handwired Mojotone Blackout that is based on the Fender 5e3 circuit When it arrived I was VERY impressed with the fit and finish and after hooking it up to an ElectroVoice EVM12L speaker cabinet loved the tone... thick and rich. If you don't use effects pedals for reverb, tremolo or other effect you may want to pick up some good effects pedals- All controls on the amp are completely dedicated to shaping the amp's tone, a design choice that is all amp and no effects. ... show more

  • Amazing!
By far the best amp I've used under $1500. Have it paid with a vintage 30 and it sound unbelievable.

  • Product was described as NEW but was either a demo, used or a customer return.
When I received the amp the outside shipping box had been taped with two different tapes and I could tell a previous shipping label had been removed. The inside box had also been re-taped. The power cord was just thrown in the box and there was not any paperwork in the box. A new amp has a 11" x 8" information pamplet and this didn't have anything. I sent the amp back because I couldn't tell if it was a return, used or a demo. When I order a new amp I expect it to be factory fresh. ... show more

  • Real Old School mini PLEXI at a Budget
I got this from Sweetwater, at $769 (which I could not mention on their review). Apparently they have it half the price in UK for a year now. This amp is just above Marshall DSL and Origin price point, none of which provide any real PLEXI feel or tone at all. However the PRS HDRX delivers real tone, scream and hype of a real PLEXI. Anyway, I wanted to try PLEXI style amp and the real ones are really expensive. You can still go with a Marshall Studio which is made in England for higher price, and they seem pretty good , especially the ST20H Studio JTM 20 which is less hyped then PRS HDRX, but the PRS HRDX is more in the $ 3000 new vintage Marshall amp category. I wanted A Vintage PLEXI style amp with Presence and both Treble and Bass volume knob to to see what I can achieve with it. - Master volume knob: eeeh, not so realistic for bedroom unless you use a speaker attenuator. Can however achieve good sound at room level with volume at 9-10 o'clock while balancing the thin sound with Bass volume knob, but you still need a speaker attenuator. - The voltage going through the Master volume and phase inverter is too high for an effect loop, the reason there are none, like any real PLEXI. - The phase inverter plays a crucial role in the distortion of a PLEXI amp. - Best sound achieved with Master volume at Max and adjust Treble Volume + Bass volume to taste. Why, well this seems to be Push Pull (Class AB) power section configuration with a phase inverter right after the Master Volume knob, and since the key to a PLEXI is the distortion from the phase inverter tube, you need Master Volume at Max to achieve PLEXI sound period. Most reviewers on Youtube say so and they don't lie. "Jay Guitar" is one of the most honest review on the matter. - Beside PLEXI sound, you can get nice SRV/Hendrix blues breaking with settings bellow - Absolute Great Hendrix sound with Master Volume at 3 O'clock, Treble volume above breaking point, and Bass volume low or zero. - Everything to max overwhelms the circuit and sound mushy. - You can carefully craft your tone with a balance between clarity, sustain and distortion. - It's an amp with vintage attitude so getting, you have a lot of room for error, as well as great tone. - Regardless how you set your amp, regardless you are soloing or playing power chords, it sounds good when the Power Tubes are glowing with every single notes you play, period. Doesn't mater the balance of clarity (Angus Young/Van Halen) vs distortion, it sounds good when the larger tube glow. If you want to save tubes and achieve a great tone, you may want to look to some boutique alternative like Friedman, but if you like to cook your tubes to get great tone at a non Arena volume, and don't mind unloading $60 on a match pair of 5881 tubes once or twice a year this is the amp for ya. This is the most affordable solution to actually cook tubes, cause if you go 50W or 100W to achieve the same you will unload way more on tube regularly. 20W Friedman amps for sample are class A and don't use phase inverter, it's using other strategies for glorifying distortion/tone/sustain, that's why the Master volume is usable on a any Friedman amp that has one and effect loop is possible. However, there is a reason Friedman also manufacture amps like this (Friedman PLEX) without an effect loop to allow high voltage flow between preamp and power section. Again, if you want to achieve most (not all) of those tones and save your tubes, well go with more expensive boutique solution like Friedman, Friedman nails these tones/dynamic pretty good and way more in bedroom volume without an expensive attenuator. Personally, I need both old school and and modern style boutique amp to achieve all the tones I need. One thing is sure, YOU WILL hardly get this real vintage PLEXI experience at lower price. Get it before the price goes up. ... show more
