  • Better than the Mac keyboard and works great with PC, Mac and Android
This is a quiet (no clicking) mechanical keyboard that has flexible ways of connecting to the devices. I tested it with MacBook Pro 2025, desktop PC and Android 15. In all cases it performed really well, I didn't notice key lag, any keys that didn't behave the same way as other keys (as far as stickiness travel, required pressure, etc.). I was particularly impressed how well it performed with Mac, which is generally a harder platform to get a decent keyboard. I'm confident to say that it outperforms the Apple wireless keyboard on multiple levels. As the case with any keyboard, there are personal preferences that will determine how one or the other keyboard feels, but overall, this is a solid and well built keyboard with quiet keys. The keyboard allows pairing with multiple devices and has three dedicated buttons to switch among the devices. One way to connect is to use a little USB-A dongle that is recognized as a USB keyboard and requires no paring or any other setup on the device. It is held magnetically in a slot on the back of the keyboard. There's a dedicated orange button for that dongle. The two other orange buttons allow paring via Bluetooth. The process is straightforward: hold the orange button pressed to enter the pairing mode and finish pairing on the actual device. When multiple devices are paired, the switching between them is done by simply pushing the orange buttons. Build quality: MacBook Pro performance. I have a couple external Apple keyboard and, while they perform well, I don't like the particularly short travel that those keys have. The ProtoArc keyboard has a much more comfortable key travel. It does sit higher on the surface making one bend the wrist more, something a keyboard wrist pad can fix. All the keys work well, including the function keys. This keyboard has a FN Lock to toggle how function keys operate. In one mode, pressing function keys translates to FN keys, in another mode, the computer adjusts brightness, volume, etc. When this keyboard is locked in a particular mode, that mode remains active even after the keyboard is powered on-off. The top right key locks the computer. The option/cmd keys operate just like they do on the OEM Apple keyboard. I don't think you'd find any compromises between this keyboard and the one from Apple. Windows PC: This keyboard works equally well with Windows 11, including the function keys and the extended functionality as brightness/media control/etc. Lock button automatically locks the computer. Number pad works as expected as well: either in cursor mode or in number entering mode (switchable through the NUM key). Using the same keyboard on both Windows and Mac platform makes one realize that common shortcuts for copy-paste as Ctrl+V (on Windows) and CMD+V (Mac) require pressing different physical keys. While the mapping can be changed, it takes a minute to readjust. Overall, I didn't notice any compromises when using this keyboard on Windows. Android: I was impressed how effortlessly this keyboard can connect to Android via Bluetooth and the device instantly shows the percentage of keyboard battery charge. When the keyboard is connected, Android has nifty hints around the shortcuts to bring emoji, voice control and other things. The on-screen does not show up when this keyboard is used. Switching the keyboard to other devices restores normal Android on-screen keyboard and connecting the keyboard back restores the keyboard connection instantly. The lock button does not lock Android,b ut instead, brings up calendar. Again, no issues with connection, typing delay or overall operation. Backlight. Every key on this keyboard has a cold-white LED underneath. There are several interesting light effects that illuminate the keys. Keys. The keys are high quality non-clicking type. The actual registering of a button press happens around 60% of the key travel. There's no tactile feedback when that happens. The keys are quiet, but not exactly silent. Banging on the keys will produce a plastic-on-plastic sound. Typing gently will be quiet. Construction. The keyboard top panel is made of aluminum and has a premium feel. The back is a plastic cover. There are extendable feet that angle the keyboard. I noticed that the keyboard sound louder when the feet are extended. Other considerations. I wanted to replace the cursor keys with clicky type buttons, but the keys are soldered. It is possible to unsolder them, but that would be a relatively complex project. The key caps are removable. Be careful if you need to transport this keyboard in a bag. I had one of the edge key caps come off. Good thing I had it in a plastic bag and the key cap was not lost. I wish it had a bit more space between the function keys and the number keys. Given the functionality and the price, this keyboard is better than many other ones. The keys don't wobble and that's one of the key considerations for the comfort of typing. I personally prefer clicky keyboards, but have not problem typing on quiet ones. • Finally, a wireless full-sized keyboard done right
I have tested quite a few different keyboards, and I've discovered that making a good one must be an extremely difficult task because so few of them do it right. As an example, there are so many backlit keyboards where the characters on the keys are extremely hard to read with the backlight on. Then there are keyboards with just strange quirks like placing the power button UNDER the caps lock key making you remove that key cap to get to the switch. And that's just scratching the surface. This keyboard gets it right. The backlighting is extremely effective, and characters are easy to read in full daylight all the down to complete darkness. There are two exceptions: The media functions of the top row of key (F1 - F12) are not lit. In other words, the upper half of those keys (F1 - F12) are illuminated but the media function printed on the lower half of the key is not illuminated. The same thing holds true for some of the keys on the number pad. For example, some of those keys have secondary functions like PgUp and PgDn, etc. However, these keys are all duplicates as there are separate PgUp and PgDn (as well as the others) on the keyboard. So, I really don't see this as a problem. Note that the backlighting is only white with a couple of exceptions: The CAPS and NUM keys are normally not illuminated at all but if you turn on Caps Lock or Num Lock then these keys will illuminate green. At first the thought of both of these keys not being illuminated bothered me, but it turns out that these keys are super easy to find even in complete darkness. The Caps Lock key is directly between two large keys (Shift and Tab), and the Num Lock is the upper left corner of the numeric keypad, so it too is easy to locate. Plus, those keys are used relatively rarely. However, I should point out that the video posted by ProtoArc on the Amazon listing for this keyboard is misleading as it clearly shows both the upper and lower halves of the keys, I just described as being illuminated but this is not at all what happens in real life. In the upper right of the keyboard is one more exception: That key has a lock symbol on it and it says green when the keyboard is charging and turns off when fully charged or not plugged in. I should also point out that the backlight is subtle. There are other backlit keyboards that are a lot brighter. But I suspect that this is done on purpose. First, since this keyboard is wireless, that saves battery life. But secondly, I notice that the backlighting seems to be just perfect for allowing the keyboard to be easily seen under any lighting conditions. As for the construction of the keyboard, the keyboard deck is made from aluminum, but it must be fairly thin as the keyboard is surprisingly light weight. However, I am not saying that this is a problem. The keyboard still feels solid without any noticeable flex when typing. The keys have a good linear feel to them. A lot of backlit keyboards suffer from being difficult to read under various conditions. For example, because the letters are not white, but clear, this makes the characters difficult to read when the backlighting is turned off during the day. Some have keys that have very thin lines making up the lettering which cause not enough light to shine though making them difficult to read under some lighting conditions. But I found this keyboard to be easy to read under all conditions. Just because the backlighting is only white, does not mean that things need to be all business. The keyboard does include a number of different lighting effects so that you can have a little fun with the keyboard. The user manual is more than a single page with clear explanations of all operations and shortcut keys. It's also nice to see a user guide that does not require an electron microscope to read. I know that this review has been rather matter of fact so it might not come through to you just how much I like it. I have tested and reviewed probably somewhere around a dozen keyboards now. It is no exaggeration to say that this keyboard is my favorite. There are other keyboards that are a lot flashier, but this keyboard seems to be all business. I alluded to some of the faults of other keyboards, so it was just refreshing to me to finally find a keyboard that just plain gets it all right. In my opinion, this is an absolutely wonderful keyboard at a very reasonable price. I can most definitely give this my highest recommendation. ... show more
