Works OK - hard to pump

  • Clean, drinkable water, fast flowrate, easy to clean
I was testing this water purification system against a solar powered version which costs twice as much and claims the same micron numbers. The Trailgo is by far the better option in all use cases except for backpacking but even there a case can be made for volume and reliability over portability. It was able to push 3 gallons in about 2 minutes of me pumping the incorrect way, after that I realized I needed to pull the pump handle all the way up and wait while the tubes filled before pushing it down to filter. The water was taken out of a mountain lake with pretty heavy algae infestation but turned out very clean and odorless as compared to the pungent intake water. I drank it right out of the jug it was stored in and didn't experience any adverse reactions. One thing to note is that the system needs to be rinsed well after use if you don't intend to use it for more than 24-48 hours. I wrung the RO filter and let the micron filter drain before I put them back in the pump and then stored it in my truck for about 3 days before the trip was done and we got home where I was able to rinse everything properly. I noticed a slight smell of stagnant water when I opened the pump , got everything rinsed and let it dry for a couple days to avoid any dampness possibly causing issues in the future. Overall this is a great tool, it could serve a large camping group or be a more permanent solution for long term boondocking. It is fast and clean. ... show more

  • Versatile water purifier
I think the main thing about this water purifier is that you're going to have to decide what the appropriate use is for yourself. I see people talking about how it is or isn't for a single activity but those needs/definitions will vary by person. As for the unit itself, it's several times larger than a Katadyn Combi or Hiker, but it also uses a different method of filtration. When I compare it to my under sink RO system (which it's more like), it's about a quarter the size of that one. The silver impregnated ceramic filters that go into the Katadyn style filters have terrible taste. Everything tastes like licking terracotta. This all just tastes "regular." The pump method works, but it's not going to keep you fully hydrated under normal circumstances. I think taking the "survival" aspect to heart, you have to know that it is for dire situations, not regular use. The membrane style should get out even the nastiest/tiniest microbes, it's just alot of work (scientific kind, not job kind) to get it done. The only part that worries me is the foot pegs. They fold out and are made of plastic. I'd like to see them fixed and possibly made of metal to feel better bout their structural integrity. TLDR: In any case, it'll clean enough water to survive in lots of situations. There are smaller options if you need them, but this will keep you alive and probably stores in the car/RV very well. ... show more

  • Fantastic!
The instructions are clear and easy to follow. Durable materials do a great job of filtering the water so it tastes good and is safe. Portable size for transporting. Works great!

  • This could save your life
Not something you would want to carry for a backpacking trip, there are much smaller units for that use. This is great for a group offloading / camping trip or at your home after a natural or manmade disaster. Easy to set up and use, it filters large amounts of water relatively quickly. Operates like a bike pump. Very stable and self-contained in its own zipper carry bag. It is now a key part of my preparedness kit. Good value for the quality. ... show more

  • Great for Preparedness - Does Not Filter Viruses
A portable water purifier that can purify up to a gallon of water in about 5 minutes?? Count me in. It has a 3-stage filtration system and a flow rate of 1.5L/min, which is quite fast! The 3-stage filtration includes a cone filter, a 5-micron filter and a 1-micron filter. Some viruses range in size from 20-400 nm. 400 nm = 0.4 microns so the 1-micron filter will not filter out viruses. I would still boil the water after using this filtration system if possible. I got this to use for backpacking and camping, though I probably won't end up backpacking with this unit as it's pretty big. It's good to have as a peace of mind in situations where you don't know if clean water will be available, however. I'll most likely be using it my preparedness kit. ... show more
