  • Works but needs work
Style: Miter Guide with 120 Angle Stops
Out of the box, no real assembly required. The numbers and lines should be darker or deeper. Not a tool for someone prone to dropping tools. The 1st thing I did was adjust the slide bar for fit in the slot. This is a new method for me but fairly easy and seems to work well. (Just for reference my slot is out of parallel from my blade .004" over 12". That's 1/32" over 8 feet.) My 2nd step was to set the 90°. It's fence would not move far enough to do that. Close, but not there. What I found was the plastic block on the bottom was not placed so well and interfering. I decided to file about 1/32" to allow the movement (5 minutes). With the 90° set I moved it off and returned it several times to see it almost repeats. It is not terrible and depending on how accurate you want/need it to be it may work for you. My guess is less than a half degree. I'm not happy with that. My 3rd step was to find better repeat. There are 2 shoulder bolts that create pivot points. One for the fence angle and the other for the finger to pick the angle. To work they have to be loose enough to wobble/move. Being who I am I decided to fix this. Under the bolt head is a round plastic block or really thick washer. With that out of the way and the bolt bottomed there is a gap. The fence pivot gap was perfect for 80-90% compression of a lock washer. I had to sand off about .015" from the plastic blocks under the finger for the same result. Now the shoulder bolts are bottomed and do not move. I have good repeat. I also removed the sharp edge of the lock washers so they don't dig into anything. There is some resistance to movement but 1 finger can move both. Now, how good is it at 30°, 45° and 60°? Seems to be pretty good. I have 2 triangles that as far as I have been able to check are good. Using those and the same bar I set 90° to, it is out .004"-005" over the 7" face at each position in both directions. (A sheet of paper ranges from .002" to .004".) I noticed one more thing. There is some movement when the knob is tightened. A .005" plastic washer for the fence pivot bolt between the fence and bar fixed that. It seems the plastic pad and fence are not on the same plane. One other difference from my old gauge. This bar is 3" shorter in front. Not a big deal but I already do miss the extra engagement in the slot. All this took me about an hour. I have to question the nickel saving engineering on this tool. But knowing what I know now would I purchase again? It's a $60 tool. Yes I would. Outside of not being able to set the 90° initially I would consider this a decent $60 miter gauge. If they spent another nickel they could probably get $80. ... show more

  • Not for large hands
Style: Miter Guide with 120 Angle Stops
Very nice in all respects, except there's not enough distance between the handle and the fence, for one hand on the handle, and the other clamping the workpiece against the fence. I find it cramped at any angle, and nearly impossible on 45 degree miters.

  • Needs a lot of fabricationI wasn't able to square it up
Style: Miter Guide with 120 Angle Stops
Wasn't able to square up the fence. The 4 holes Thru the protractor that mount it to the fence needed to be drilled out about a 32nd inch and the bottom edge of the fence milled off to clear the phenolic resin slider on the bottom of the protractor. Also the phenolic resin slider need filing off at more of an angle so it would slide up on the saw table. After all that it is now square to the miter slot and saw blade I have not had a chance to verify any other angles yet! It's cold here in Montana, and in my shop, will up date when it warms up a little. Update, the protractor has a tendency to come loose from the slot bar and throw off your angles by several degrees, checked frequently and kept tight it does an acceptable job. ... show more

  • Very impressed!
Style: Miter Guide with 120 Angle Stops
This Item came damaged. One of the teeth were bent. This is very well built. I was surprised how well this is made. I needed to set it up but it was almost perfect when it arrived. It just needed to be tweaked just a bit but now it is spot on. I was told the company will send me a replacement. Aside from the two teeth being bent it is very sturdy. There is no side to side movement at all when you use it. The only thing that might not last is the aluminum track but only time will tell. But for the price you can't beat this. Update. I contacted the company and they are sending a replacement. Now that’s costumer service. ... show more

  • Wonderful tool at good price, but needs calibration and documentation!
Style: Miter Guide with 120 Angle Stops
I needed a miter gauge to replace the stock gauge on my restored Rockwell/Delta Bandsaw. Because bandsaw miter slots are closer to the blade than those on a table saw, it was difficult to find an accurate miter gauge that was small enough to fit on the bandsaw. The Powertec 71143 fits perfectly and just clears the blade. Seems very well made and worth the money and is less expensive than several other similiar (or identical) models. In design it is almost identical to some Incra models but costs less. Someone obviously stole someone else's design but I don't know who was first. However, make certain that you calibrate the Powertec BEFORE you use it---despite its description of "factory calibrated", mine was off by almost 1-1/2 degrees when I tested it with a calibrated precision square. Easy enough to adjust, but there were also no instructions included with the gauge so I had to go hunting online for them on Powertec's site. I deducted a start for the lack of documentation and the lack of calibration as delivered. It is still a worthy purchase. ... show more

  • Expected "out-of-the-box accuracy" nope
Style: Miter Guide with 120 Angle Stops
Out of the box was supposed to be 90, but no. Out of the box was supposed to be set to the dimensions of my miter slot, but no. Happily, Powertec provided instructions to set their "factory set" tool to my tool. It appears to work now. Accepted that Powertec doesn't know what I'm working with. Accepted that Powertec can't predict miter slots. Not Accepted: Powertec promised 90: Nope. ... show more

  • Nice miter gauge. Feels solid. Accurate once set up.
Style: Miter Guide with 120 Angle Stops
Nice miter gauge. Feels heavy duty, of course time will tell. Love the fact that it has expansion discs on the bar to adjust to the miter slot and not simply nylon screws in the side. Also has a removable T slot catch on the end of the bar to keep miter gauge from tilting back out of the slot. I added a Powertec 3 inch aluminum fence and a flip stop, very happy with the fit and finish of all 3. Mine was NOT accurate out of the box, but there are 4 screws on the miter gauge that you can loosen to calibrate it to the table miter slots. Overall, very pleased with this miter gauge! I would say it’s comparable to an Incra, which is the standard for accuracy. ... show more
