Great jointer for the price

I was looking to for a very inexpensive jointer and found that this was one of the cheapest available. I have put several hundred board feet through the jointer since I bought it and have been very pleased by the results. I have put both six inch soft wood (pine) and hardwood (oak) through the jointer with no issues. Compared to the Wen 6552 planer I bought at the same time, this jointer gives far smoother surfaces. Given its tiny size, I do not recommend very large cut depths. I typically shave 1/16th of an inch or less with each pass. I have had only two minor complaints with the jointer, but neither has affected the performance of the jointer. First, the plastic cover for the swing mechanism on the blade guard was broken on delivery. This is not really a big deal. Second, none of my vacuum hose adapters fitted this jointer (I have a lot). I had to go buy an adapter. If you get his jointer, you should also get something like the POWERTEC 70148 Dust Control Flex Cuff with Hose Clamps, 2-1/2-Inch. This jointer will quickly bog down if you do not have a vacuum connected to it. However, once you get a vacuum connected, the dust collection is excellent. Note, as an earlier reviewer has mentioned, this jointer has been discontinued. You will have to buy your replacement blades from a third party. However, I expect that PorterCable will come out with an updated version that will have some minor differences from this one. So I am fairly sure getting replacement blades will be no issue.

Convenient and does the job well

I’ve got to say, I’m pretty impressed with this jointer. It’s a bit loud when I hook up the vac system but other then that it’s worked great so far. I put white oak that was 6 inches wide on there and it cut it like butter. Like I said I’m impressed out how strong it is. This tool is very important to have in a wood shop and being able to move it around to create more space when not needed is convenient. I definitely recommend this product. The only thing that had me worried was when I first started it up it had a small delay and almost seemed it wasn’t going to start. Before purchasing this item I read a ton of reviews as I do with all my products and I came across one that said it wouldn’t even turn on right out of the box. Well I feared this would happen to me as well. After using it for a month now, at least three days a week I’ve noticed that the small lag during start up is normal for this product, or for this one in particular. If I ever have a problem with it not starting up I will definitely send it back in for a replacement and I will duly note it on here for you guys.

Great customer service!

Great little jointer. However, I purchased this unit on March 13th, ran 7 boards through it, and it stopped working. Kaput. Called Porter Cable on Monday morning, and after a 2 minute phone call with a real person, I was all set. New unit arrived Wednesday morning. I don't think my unit's breakdown is any kind of indictment on the product line or the company. Things sometimes break down, that's all. But since getting the new model, I've had no issues. It's accurate (for what I do), easy to set up, and move around my small shop. Very happy. Would have given 5 stars had it not been for the initial hiccup.

Worked great for 11 months then stopped!

I'm very pleased with PORTER Cable's solution to my broken jointer. It had only a few days left on it's 1 year warranty when I requested a solution to my problem. I explained that I had access to their service center, but it would cost me $50 in gas to make the necessary two round trips to the service center. Within a couple of days they shipped me a new jointer. I'm assuming they'll want the broken jointer sent back to them, but I haven't heard from them yet. This response to my broken jointer problem was amazing and as a result I'm a PORTER CABLE customer for ever! It worked great for 11 months then quit while joining a piece of wood. It just stopped and I checked the breaker, wiggled the switch and shook the jointer, nothing. The closest repair center is an hour away, 6 gallons of gas round trip times two. So I'm out $50 in gas just to fix it and it is within the one year warranty. It worked great until it stopped. So I guess I'll run it over to the service center and spend the 50 bucks.

Very Good Benchtop Jointer

When I made an interstate move, I elected to sell the Jet stationary jointer that had served me well for many years. I have a lot less shop space now, so I had to go with a benchtop model as a replacement. After doing some research, it seemed that the variable speed of the Porter Cable jointer outweighed the lack of spiral/helical cutters. Some might consider the lack of a cast iron table a disadvantage, but I would rather have the lighter weight of the aluminum table since I'll be moving the tool on and off the bench. Setup was pretty easy. I just have a couple of quibbles with the manual. The unit I received had the cutter guard already installed, but the instructions include installation of the cutterhead guard as a step in setup. No big deal. Also, the manual shows four Phillips screws that have to be loosened to install the dust port. The unit I received had two Phillips and two hex screws. The hex screws were very tight, and the hex key included in the package was a bit small for the screws. I had a key that was a better fit among my tools and was able to loosen the screws, but it required quite a bit of torque. After I got the dust port installed, I was able to attach it to a Festool dust extractor hose with a universal adapter as shown in the photo. Dust collection seems to work pretty well. After squaring up the fence and testing it on scrap, I tried the jointer on a piece of 4/4 six inch wide flat sawn cherry that was pretty cupped. Per the recommendations in the manual, I jointed the edge at the lowest speed, and then one face at the highest. The face came out flat and square after four passes @ 1/64" as shown in the photo. Cutter marks were minimal. Finally, I'd recommend keeping the lower edge of the fence 1/16" or so above the table to decrease noise caused by vibration of the fence against the table.

accurate & affordable - not the cheapest but well worth the extra few dollars

I build guitars (acoustic and electric) and this is one of those "why did I wait so long to buy this?" tools - I've been jointing/planing wood by hand with a #7 Stanley all this time. What was I thinking?!? This accomplishes 15 minutes of work in 15 seconds. Two passes and I'm done, with a joint that is straight and tight -- it literally saves me an hour off every job. The depth-of-cut control is great allowing the jointer to shave off as little as 1/128th" for a PERFECT fit. And the speed control is wonderful for working with hard or soft woods, allowing you to dial in a cutter speed that cuts without burning the wood. Motor has loads of power. surfacing even 3" wide ash is no problem if you use a sane rate-of-feed. The steel chassis and aluminum bed/fence is solid and the aluminum saves quite a bit of weight which I appreciate when putting this tool back up on the shelf after working. Cast iron is great 'till you have to move it. This tool is still > 40 pounds in weight so it's not going to budge from vibration or normal usage. I like the dust port on the side. Leave it off if working outside or connect it to a shopvac or dust control system (my choice).

Entry Level Price, Entry Level Results, Entry Level Quality Control

The first and foremost thing that comes to mind with this jointer is the poor quality control. This piece of machinery was recommended to me by a friend who was achieving seemingly great results. However, the first jointer I received was the epitome of poor quality control. To even say quality control is a misnomer, the bed of the jointer was so twisted that I wondered if anyone had even checked this at all. Obviously not. Additionally, the bolts securing the bed to the frame were overtorqued and had numerous cracks creeping from every single bolt. Rest assured, Amazon replaced in a timely manner and I received a new one. When I received a new one, it seemed pristine. I had no issues with assembly or getting the bed leveled with the fence. For approximately two weeks of sporadic use, I had okay results. The issue being that due to the small bed length, it could only accurately joint a piece of wood up to about 30 inches. After 30 inches, a curve in the wood begins to form over its entire length. My attempt to joint 38 inch length pieces of wood resulted in bowing throughout, but with a uniform thickness. The edge jointing had a similar issue, but of less magnitude. The final straw was when the jointer refused to turn on. All searches on Google made it seem as if it was a broken capacitor. However, after the mixed bag of underwhelming results and the previous dud I had received, I decided to return the unit in its entirety and search elsewhere for an entry level jointer. Although, I love the idea of an entry level jointer for around 300 dollars, this piece of equipment did not fit the bill. My background is in fine carpentry and although I am doing this for a hobby, such a cumbersome piece of equipment takes the joy out of it. I cannot recommend this product at this time, until the quality control vastly improves. As long as this product suffers from a lack of quality control, it will only continue to kill the passion of new woodworkers who could be led to believe they cannot create great furniture.

I'm retired from a career in technology and I took up woodworking as a hobby two or three years ago. I suppose I did what most beginners do - picture frames, planters, bandsaw boxes and lots of shop projects. But I just moved up to making outdoor furniture and without boards that have been squared and surfaced, the project suffers. This jointer has fixed all of that. Solid tool that with very little assembly is set up and ready to go. I find it to be very accurate, easy to use and the speed control allows you to adjust speed of the cutter head for different species of wood. Yes, it's limited to 6" for the width but I seldom use anything wider so it's not an issue for me. Twisted, cupped and bowed boards from the lumber yard are easily made flat and square with just a few passes. It only has two knives so it's not as great as a jointer with a spiral or helical cutting drum but for about $300 it will get you in the game and make an excellent addition to your addictive hobby! Just FYI... I have a neighbor with a planer which is needed to make perfectly squared boards but chances are, you'll be able to correct a lot of issues in your boards using just a jointer and a table saw. I love this tool!
