I got this book before installing an in-ground pool. I learned a lot about all things pool care in a simple format, in layman's term, and even the pool chemistry chapters was an easy read. I figured that since I maintained an above ground pool with some success for five years, I could do this future pool with an expert like John guiding the way. I read the book through several times, and emailed the author with a question, not really expecting a response. My wife told me authors don't respond to questions about their book, and surprise, John got back to and gave me great advice on my future plans for the yet to be built pool. Thanks John for saving me time and money, and I highly recommend your book for anyone interested in knowing how pools work, wether they plan to maintain it or not. ... show more

    • Helpful for new pool owners
We purchased a new pool so purchased this book, given the great reviews, to know what to expect once it was installed. There is a lot of useful information in here and is organized in a way that you can easily find something you want to reference or you can read it through and find some information in multiple spots. It could have used a proofreader but that does not take away from its understandability. The only thing I wish is that it was more clear at the outset which type of pools it is referring to. There is more information needed for in-ground plaster pools than for above-ground vinyl pools and it is not always clear if that section applies to a vinyl. Perhaps the third edition could use a section under the title that says "Applicable to..." ... show more

    • The Title of this Book is Fitting
After haphazardly taking care of a pool for 15 years (really watching my husband do it), I vowed I was going to learn all about pool care this summer so that we could take care of the pool the correct way. I really believed basic care of a pool was complicated - and the test kit with all its regents was overwhelming to me. (We were running water samples into the local pool store sporadically and trusting what they told us to do.) The book reads quickly, and it really does simplify the basic care of the pool. I have had a sparkling blue pool for a week now, and the pool testing kit no longer scares me. Now, I go into the pool store and tell them what I need. Another thing I like about the book is that it presents basic pool care first in the book, and that will probably be all that most people need. He breaks pool care down into seasons which will be useful. We never knew how to open and close the pool or how to treat it during the winter. But the book also explains how to deal with more complex issues like algae or staining or pool repairs. It will be a useful reference to have handy. This is the only pool care book I bought, and it is the only one I will need. I am thrilled that I will not spend my summer studying chemistry. ... show more

    • Good for a basic overview, not so great with solving chemistry issues
Purchased the book to fully understand pool chemistry, how each variable compliments each other (Alkalinity, pH, Chlorine, Cyanuric Acid, Calcium Harness, etc.). What is missing is a how-to guide on dealing with specific issues (e.g., in my case I had very high Alkalinity and was significantly impacting other aspects of the pool chemistry). I had to look elsewhere to better understand this key part of weekly pool maintenance. Otherwise, the book is fine providing an overview of major aspects of pool maintenance (seasonal, weekly, etc.) ... show more

This is the second time I have ordered this book, as I misplaced my first copy. I am struggling with my CYA and took a chance and emailed the author-which he offers free of charge. Within 24 hours he responded with a few tips and things to help with my problem. Beyond that, this book really does make the intimidation of managing your own chemical away with solid tried and true information. This is a mist have for us non chemist home pool owners. We are new pool owners and were struggling with several maintenance issues. A friend recommended this book and we have found it easy to read and very helpful. However, we were still struggling with some specifics to our situation. We emailed John and he called us.
