  • Another Polk Audio winner. Excellent bang for the buck.
Color: Black Style: Signature Pattern Name: Speaker
I have owned the Polk RM6750 5.1 package for more than a few years. While overall a very fine mid range system, the center channel speaker was always the weak point in the system. I found myself continually making "sound level" adjustments to the center speaker to find a range where the satellites did not drown out the movie dialogue being funneled through the center channel. I did a lot of research, including calling Polk, before choosing the Polk Audio Signature S35 American HiFi Home Theater Slim Center Speaker over the Polk Audio TL2 Speaker Center Channel (Each, Black) . While I'm sure that the TL2 is a fine speaker in its own right. It was simply not a significant enough upgrade over the current center channel speaker to justify the price. To start, the Signature Slim Center Speaker (Black) is an absolutely gorgeous piece to look at. It's also HUGE and very heavy. Both are understandable given the quality and number of speakers in the unit. In terms of sound quality, it's absolutely remarkable. I own a very large movie collection on BluRay and like any buff will watch particular movies multiple times. Trust me, this speaker provided a level of response and timbre to voices that was noticeable. I also feel that it also provided additional "lift" to the left and right satellite speakers. I don't know if this is due to the SIX 3" cones flanking the 1" tweeter, but it is what I attribute this increased clarity to. Some may say that adding a powerful center channel such as this to a mid range system like the RM6750 is overkill. Perhaps, but for me this center channel provided an upgrade that added new life and longevity to what is a more than acceptable sound system. While the S35 may seem pricey as an upgrade, its performance and value per dollar more than justify the price. ... show more

  • Best Center Speaker for Narrow Spaces
Color: Black Style: Signature Pattern Name: Speaker
I'm not an audiophile, but I would say I have a good ear (multiple times in all-state and regional choirs each, continued in college in choir with the fine-arts majors). I have a good enough ear to name the people doing voices in cartoon movies (assuming I've seen them in other movies before), including people that my wife finds obscure. I enjoy all types of music, though I use my stereo system more for home theater than for music these days. This is just to give you background on my ear and preferences, since which speakers a person likes depends on these things. That being said, what prompted me to get this speaker is that I didn't have room for my beloved center speaker anymore. I have a Yamaha RX-A1030 receiver (110 watts per channel), with a Yamaha NS-C444 center speaker (250 W max / 100 W nominal; 55 Hz - 35 kHz) and two Yamaha NS-777 towers (250 W max / 100 W nominal; 30 Hz - 35 kHz) for my main speakers. I use the surrounds that came built in to our house for full surround sound. I LOVE my front set up, which goes sufficiently low that I can physically feel explosions and never felt the need for a subwoofer. But we installed a fireplace, and there really is no location for our TV other than above the fireplace (I wish there was). This resulted in a little over 4" of clearance between the top of the mantel and the bottom of my TV for my center speaker. So my beloved center NS-C444 had to go. I replaced it with a Yamaha NS-C210 (120 W max / 40 W nominal; 65 Hz - 45 kHz), but it wasn't the same (still better than a phantom center though). We recently replaced our TV and it gave me an extra 1.5" of space, so I looked to see if there was a better center. In trying to match the new center to my towers as closely as possible, the Polk S35 was the closest (20-150 W/channel; 53Hz–40 kHz). And it was also the most affordable option if you allow for the possibility of wanting to replace the towers for a matching set. I think I still prefer my NS-C444, but the Polk S35 is a close second and WAY better than the NS-C210. The base is much more present, which makes the voices sound fuller and more accurate to me. I've watched a couple of movies on my modified system, and the S35 even blends well (so far) with my towers, much better than the ND-S210 even though it was from the same manufacturer. I liked the S35 so much that I've ordered two refurbished S60 towers from Polk (20-300 W/channel; 26Hz–40 kHz; $315 + tax / speaker) to get matching sound up front (the refurbished price was too good to pass up), since I plan on putting a projector in the basement and would need a second set of speakers for there anyway (now the future home of my 3 matching Yamahas). I can't say enough good things about this center speaker. Obviously, I would prefer a center with larger woofers if I had the room. But having six 3" woofers has around the same surface area as the two 5" woofers in my NS-C444, which may be why it is so comparable. So if you only have room for a short center speaker like I, I highly recommend the Polk S35. To try and quantify my recommendation, I didn't just order S60 towers, I ordered the S30 center (used - like new on Amazon for $130 + tax) and two S20 bookshelf speakers (refurbished from Polk for $160 + tax / pair) for my home gym. In other words, I liked the S35 enough to take an $847 (total w/ tax) flier on 5 more speakers. Enough said. ... show more

  • Great sounding center and L/R channel speakers.
Color: Black Style: Signature Pattern Name: Speaker
The S35 speakers sound great. HUGE improvement over my cheaper polk setup. I have three of these s53's for my center speaker and front L/R. they sound clear, and music/ dialogue are sharp. They are decently large, so and stick out from the wall a good six inches and weight about 14 pounds, so be aware that they are not tiny. really solid build quality. The pictures I attached show the speakers paired with a 65" 4k LG tv for size reference. ... show more

  • Great speaker for use with the Mantle-mount
Color: Black Style: Signature Pattern Name: Speaker
First off: This speaker sounds great. The overall sound is very balanced. It can also push a respectable amount of volume and bass for a 4" speaker. But the real reason I bought is that it is one of the few speakers on the market which you can attach to the Mantle-mount TV wall mount. I didn't want to use one of those fuax surround sound amplified speaker bars. And I already had Polks speakers for the rest of my surround sound. The speaker is a bit heavy for the speaker mounting bar, but with some wire ties I was able to sure up the bracket and ensure the speaker doesn't vibrate. The speaker is thick enough that you can't use the Mantle mount's pull handle for anything but pushing it back up. But you can still reach the sides of the speaker rail and use that to pull the mount down. ... show more
