Got this for my son for Christmas and he loves it!! He's been collecting cards for about a year now so I figured it's time to teach us both how to battle. They make it so easy to learn with the hardboard battle mat, 3 premade decks, coin, hit counters, instruction manual and more. Most importantly you start with a Pikachu electric deck and the other player with the cinderace fire deck. Each card in these decks are numbered so you start by putting them in order. Then just follow your individual manual book for that certain deck and it just walkes you threw how to play, with the manual already knowing what's going to happen next! It's awesome and super easy to learn! Then once you get it down you can switch to using the blue, Eevee darkness deck that's a bit more complicated and then you just get better and better and it all becomes very easy and a blast to play! If your kiddo is wanting to learn how to battle in Pokemon then I say this is the best way to go, hands down!! ... show more

Picked this up for learning how to play the game with my kids. Comes with 3 battle decks and step by step play instructions to get started. It doesn’t cover advanced rules but those aren’t needed with these decks. This is well worth the price just for the 3 decks, but the board and coins make it much more enjoyable to have a battle.     • Great but shallow introduction to a huge universe
I wanted to get my wife, who loves Pokemon but hasn't really been a gamer, some Pokemon cards and wow - if you're coming in from the outside, the trading card game is pretty overwhelming. I wasn't even clear what all I would need for the two of us to play. This set is a really good introduction. The tutorial is exactly that, and the decks are pre-stacked to work with it, which is a really nice touch. The cards are numbered on the faces, so you could re-stack if you wanted to, and you can sort the decks back out into the three originals if you try mixing and matching. Moving beyond the tutorial, these particular decks depend pretty heavily on luck. I got into a bit of a rabbit hole and have learned that the larger community builds decks that have many more cards allowing searching and extra draws, which can improve the consistency of a deck's performance quite a lot. So, consider your audience - if your players aren't really going to be sophisticated about building or using a deck with a lot of tricky functions, great! If they are - well, this is still really inexpensive and a legitimately good introduction but I think middle-school-age children and older will outgrow it pretty fast. ... show more

    • Helps to Understand the Cards and How to Play
I was glad to find this at a good price. I am totally new to caring about trading cards but my seven year old was convinced by every kid in the neighborhood that she needed some. This game, with the three decks of cards and step by step tutorial helped make sense of the plethora of info found on each card so we can suss out the value and purpose of cards collected elsewhere as well as enjoy an actual game without much cost or effort. It is fun enough gameplay as well as good 1st-2nd grade level math practice. If you are new to it all, like me, I would recommend this game, a Scholastic guidebook that lists pokemon, and a binder to sort and display additional cards. And also maybe a magnifying glass because some of that info on the cards is very, very small print. ... show more
