  • Terrible instructions, great toy
Color: Basic Size: 600 Piece Style: Single
Another set my mom bought of this had some instruction manuals. They’re awful. But the toy is being enjoyed deeply by my daughter anyways now that we’re ignoring the instructions.

  • Building Toy with Teeny Tiny Pieces Gets Mixed Reception
Let me start by saying that I enjoy building toys. I like LEGO Bricks & More Builders of Tomorrow Set 6177 , Connectagons , Kapla 200 Blocks Set , Melissa & Doug 60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks and so on. I enjoy building with my kid or just messing around by myself, and we have quite a few building toys at our house, so I feel pretty qualified to judge a good one from a not-so-good one. I also currently have an early elementary-school age child, so I can speak to her enjoyment of Plus-Plus as well. Plus-Plus consists of tiny (in this case 1200 of them) little softish plastic pieces that are all shaped, as the name would suggest, like two plus signs stuck together (or like a line with two evenly spaced crossbars, if you want to think of it another way). They are each approximately an 3/4" long, about 1/2" inch wide, and about the thickness of two or three pennies stacked together. They are SMALL. So if you think Lego are too small to play with cheerfully, it's entirely possible you won't like Plus-plus. The set we have is in a collection of neon-like colors that LOOK as if they would glow in blacklight (but I can't vouch for whether they do or not): pink, blue, green, kindof a translucent white, orange, and yellow. I'm not a plastics expert, so it's difficult to describe the softish texture of these pieces - they are not hard plastic like Lego, yet they are not rubbery. You COULD probably bend one if you very much wanted to and could get a good enough grip, but I don't know why you would ever want to do this, as it would probably make the piece unusable. They are almost like...oh, I don't know...the kind of plastic some tupperware-type products are made from. Yeah, that's it. The pieces fit together in a myriad of ways in multiple dimensions; the fit is snug but it's not hard to put them together. It is, in fact, this snug fit which gives them their unique ability to act, at certain connection points, like a tiny hinge. Thus, if you were to put a row of pieces together, you could gently bend the row into a curve. If you put a BUNCH of rows together to make a flat plane (as though doing a jigsaw puzzle, which is what these pieces remind me of), you could gently bend it to form a bowl-shape (or other curved-plane figure). You can also attach them perpendicularly to each other and swing them back and forth, as though with a gate or door. This can only be done so often before the pieces come apart, but if you are very careful, you can manage to make functioning "gates" or other hinged creations that work for a little while. In theory, this is a really cool toy. The box and accompanying insert show some magnificent things (a silly pair of glasses, a toy circus bigtop, crowns, pencil cups, toy cars, even a toy tea-set, all clearly NOT made by the elementary-school-age children that are shown playing with them. I mean, there is just no way. My kid has very good fine motor skills, plays happily with Lego and similar for hours - both model-making per instructions and inventing on her own, but she has yet to come up with anything substantial with Plus-plus. Maybe it's that Plus-plus pieces are just too small for her to work with skillfully, even with her little fingers. For my part, I find them a little frustrating. Yes, they fit together nicely. Yes, they hinge nicely. But they also come APART nicely. And they often hinge a little TOO nicely (i.e., creations you don't WANT to bend, bend anyway, or in the wrong places). Everything must be very carefully balanced and supported, and it's not always (not ever?) very intuitive how to do this with only the one shape. Making complex, "realistic" objects with Plus-plus takes experience, planning, and a certain amount of engineering skill. There are no instructions or step-by-step models included with the set; one is expected to just fiddle with them until you figure it out, and I must admit I have not spent more than an hour or two fiddling with them so far (they are a recent acquisition), but I did not immediately see how to build a toy car (or whatever) with them. Lots of abstract sculptures of about 6" in diameter, but nothing that looked like anything concrete. And I just didn't find them...fun enough...to sit and fiddle with for hours. I WANTED to find them that fun, I really did. Especially after spending $50 on the set. But I haven't yet. I am generally of the opinion that for construction toys, you should always get the biggest set you can afford, but I recommend, with Plus-plus, that you get the smallest set first and see if you like them before investing in this 1200-piece version. For an adult fiddle-toy or desk-toy, it might be a cute/fun/unique thing, but you probably don't want a box of 1200 of these on your desk. My kid will play with them, and maybe she will get better at them over time, but they are not the huge thrill I thought they would be. In the interest of full disclosure, I also plan to use them for math manipulatives (double duty!) since we homeschool, so it's not a total washout. Long story short, your mileage may vary. ... show more

  • My son enjoys them
Color: Basic Size: 600 Piece Style: Single
These are cute, but I feel like they are really pricey for the tiny box they come in. My 7 year old enjoys playing with them every once in a while, and he did like the app that he could use to build with. They remind me of legos but all being one shape, it does make them use their imagination to create things though. ... show more

  • It's a hit!
Color: Neon Size: 300 Piece Style: Single
We are big on open-ended toys and these are perfect for my older kids (8,10,12). The colors are bright, the pieces are sturdy and uniform and they don't take up a lot of storage space. My 3 older kids can all play together at the same time and there's enough pieces in this one pack they don't usually fight over them. I love seeing what they come up with and they love using their creativity with these. Definitely small enough to be a choking hazard if you still have kiddos that put everything in their mouths, so be aware of that. Otherwise, we love them. ... show more

  • Fun Toy
Color: Neon Size: 600 Piece Style: Single
These are really fun. I am disappointed about the colors though. There are 6 different colors and 600 total pieces in the box. Once might assume there would be about 100 of each color. This is not the case. We got 182 white pieces, 135 yellow, 96 green, 73 blue, 65 orange pieces, and 61 pink. Maybe the mix is random, or maybe white is cheapest to make... I know one thing, it is certainly the least useful color for building unless we are making igloos. It's worth noting that none of the sample projects on the box make heavy use of white. We find ourselves running out of blue for sky and pink for flowers, but with a ton of extra white. It is also difficult to build well in 3 dimensions due to the nature of building with this particular shape. You cannot make a perfect cube for instance. This is not a huge problem, especially for youngsters, but I found myself wishing there were half sized pieces mixed in to help with smoothing joints and edges. Based on the above complaints I can't give this product 5 stars. I'd actually rather give 3.5 than 4, but 3 seems rather low as it is a very fun toy. I appreciate that it is made in Denmark and the packaging was very minimal. The plus pluses were not encased in additional plastic for instance. It's a quality toy and I do recommend it, just know that you may get an overabundance of white pieces and that kids with OCD tendencies may not enjoy the toy as much as more easy going kids who don't require perfect edges on their creations. My son loves the things and all of the adults in the family have a great time using them too. I actually find it rather soothing just fiddling around with them and pushing them together. For the price they are charging though, I feel that my complaints are justified. ... show more

  • Broken package
Color: Neon Size: 300 Piece Style: Single
We love Plus Plus Blocks and that’s the truth of it. When this arrived the manufacturer packaging was split open, as if it wasn’t glued together at all. Most of the blocks were loose in the Amazon box and some were lost through a corner of the box. After counting, we are short about 60 blocks. We felt bad as this was a gift. To make it presentable we collected all the pieces and glued the box back together. We would order again and hope this is a one-off type of situation. ... show more
