Description

Once in a lifetimeThree low-income families have been given a handsome retainer to join Geraldine Borden for a day at her cliffside estate. All the parents must do to collect the rest of their money is allow their children to test out the revolutionary playground equipment Geraldine has been working on for decades. But there’s a reason the structures in the bowels of her gothic castle have taken so long to develop—they were never meant to see the light of day. When a band of dysfunctional children is suddenly thrust into a diabolical realm of violence, they must grow up instantly to have a chance at survival. Will they find a way to put their differences aside, or be swallowed up by the insidious architecture all around them?"With Playground, Aron Beauregard transcends himself, delivering a genuinely chilling, uncomfortable novel that will make even the most jaded horror fan squirm. A harrowing, relentless read that left me breathless." (Brian Keene)Warning: This book contains graphic content. Listener discretion is advised. Read more

  • Disgusting. I loved it.
This book definitely delivered gore and horror. It was so much worse because kids were the main victims. Very graphic, shocking, gross, and a disgustingly good read.

  • Gross but engaging
Three low-income families are introduced to the Borden Estate. What they think is going to be a joyful, lucky trip, turns into one of the most dreadful experiences of their lives. Geraldine tells these families that if their children come and play for a few hours, they’ll get lots of money, and in the beginning, you would think the main characters, Geraldine and her “assistant” Fuchs, are very trustworthy and kind, but soon you find out they’re the exact opposite. A group of 8 kids from different families are put together in revolutionary playground equipment that Geraldine, Fuchs, and Geraldines adopted son, Rock, have been working on for decades now. Geraldine is a crazy, old woman who gets sexual pleasure from others' misery, she never had a special relationship with her mother and can not have kids of her own. Rock is just her puppet who has been getting abuse from her his whole life, and Fuchs is a former Nazi doctor and scientist engineer. This book is written very well, but recommended for teenagers, or people who don't have a weak stomach. There are tons of small, gorey details that make your stomach turn, such as the quote, “As the bloody pieces of his brother dribbled out of the spouts, Bobby had a decision to make.” but they are very entertaining. The end of the chapters are somewhat suspenseful and makes you eager to read the next chapter, for example, at the end of chapter 16, it says, “CJ stared at the blinded dog in the distance, hoping it wouldn’t recover anytime soon. His limbs trembled uncontrollably as the last traces of daylight between the door and the ground disappeared.” There are a bit of disturbing parts in the book where it made me wanna quit, but as I read on there was more than the gross, sexual parts of the book. If you’re into horror stories and not so squeamish to kids getting violently killed, then this book is for you ... show more

  • laughable
I bought this only because I heard so much about “the scene.” An avid horror reader, I couldn’t imagine a horror scene that would be too much for me. Well, it’s not horror. The scene is disturbing but it’s so over written and plagued by terrible metaphors that it’s hilarious to read. The same can be said for the rest of the book. The author has not found a silly metaphor he doesn’t want to use in place of simple language. The plot is ok. It’s horror and would be good horror if he understood point of view and some other basic mechanics of writing. The characters are dimensional for the most part and we get a few little surprises but nothing you don’t really see coming. The end was satisfying enough but can’t say I’ll ever pick up another book by this author. ... show more

  • Gory and fun and addicting.
Gory and fun and addicting as all hell lol I could NOT put it down after the first chapter. The language is colorful. Someone mentioned, in another review, the writer uses too many metaphors but I for one LOVED it. I could envision what was happening. I could smell the odors. Hear the sounds. Most importantly I felt PRESENT with the characters. I couldn't believe every death got worse, the meat grinder ain't NOTHING. I'm going to look up more books by this author. If you're not squeamish, and like dark messed up s***, this is the book for you. 10/10 highly recommend. I bawled at the ending, bittersweet and satisfying. ... show more

I'm still relatively new to this author, but I'm finding that I like his style very much! PLAYGROUND seemed to be a hybrid of Saw and Squid Game but with children fighting to the death. The premise of the book is wholly original--three low-income families are approached with a proposition: allow their children to test out some revolutionary playground equipment in exchange for a sizable sum of money. Done! But of course there's a catch. The antagonist behind the playground is a mysterious woman named Geraldine, and this playground equipment was designed with only purpose in mind, to cause brutal pain and suffering. The adult characters were expertly created, and the reader could feel their emotions. It was the actions of one parent who really caught my attention, however. As a parent, of course I'd want my child to win, but could I really coach my child into killing another in order for that to happen? This is just one of the many moral dilemmas this book raises. The interior illustrations added to the sense of dread and horror that permeates this story, and the ending, while satisfying, left me heartbroken for the one who "just wanted to play." ... show more
