Description

HVT stands for Horizontal Vertical Transforming technology which transforms horizontal movement of a voice coil into vertical movement of a woofer diaphragm to produce true, powerful and wide-range bass in a very shallow, reduced depth structure. The TS-WH500A amplified subwoofer system is a truly groundbreaking approach in loudspeaker design. HVT technology uses a unique linkage mechanism, which allows the magnet and voice coil of the dual motor structure to be positioned horizontally to the left and the right side of vertically moving dual speaker diaphragms. Combined, the two diaphragms have an effective surface area equal to a conventional 8" subwoofer and fire in a bipolar arrangement, increasing output while also canceling destructive vibrations within the enclosure. The result of this innovative technology is a subwoofer system with significantly reduced physical depth, while maintaining greater excursion and linearity for superior bass reproduction, natural sound quality and higher output.

  • Look no further for a compact sub! Look no further for a compact sub!
All things considered, this is a FANTASTIC sub. If you are looking for a compact, amp+woofer combo that can easily slide under or behind your seat, or take the least amount of space possible in your hatchback or trunk, look no further. I purchased this sub along with a Kenwood KSC-SW11 Compact Powered Enclosed Subwoofer, and the difference is truly insane. I suppose its possible the Kenwood unit was defective, thats the only other possibility I can think of other than its just a piece of junk. The Pioneer's wattage rating might be less than that of the Kenwood, but don't let that fool you. The Kenwood struggled and missed low notes so often, while popping and clipping bass drum/ beat notes. The technology of this new Pioneer sub is that it doesn't function like a normal speaker, so the lower power rating is OK - it producers much more sound than the Kenwood. Lower notes and smoother beats Just so long as you know you are not going to get window-rattling, earth shaking subwoofer setups that take up half or your entire trunk for ease of install and reclaimed trunk space. I'd say this sub sounds and "hits" like that of some of the best OEM/Factory subwoofers that come in high-end automotive setups, and really even then some. Thats what you should expect. Nothing anyone will hear outside of the car. But plenty to fill in all the lows in the music when you're driving around. I wanted something under the seat as to not take up any other space in my vehicle. This sub is perfect. My friends can't believe how good it sounds and hard it hits for it's size. It has easily sold itself to half dozen of my friends. And for anyone who is wondering, since the information is not provided here or on Pioneer's website, it DOES come with the power/ground/remote wiring harness and plenty of cable, along with speaker taps for tapping off of rear speaker outputs from aftermarket radio decks. It might require a converter for high-end sound systems such as Bose. The ONLY other thing you will need to connect this to the S/W RCA outputs of an aftermarket deck is a set of RCA cables. The included harness has a set of female RCA plugs to connect to. Don't hesitate, you won't be disappointed. UPDATE: After almost a month, and more than 5,000 miles driven running this sub the entire time, I am still very impressed with this sub. 12 to 14 hr road trips are much more pleasant with a better sounding music system, and this sub is handling long drives like a champ. 2ND UPDATE: After 2 years and 50,000 miles of driving and using this sub, it still works great and sounds as good as it did on day 1! 3RD UPDATE: 3+ years and 70,000 miles later, still works and sounds amazing! I'm about to buy a 2nd unit for another vehicle without hesitating. TIP: Run the sub-out gain on your head unit at close to max. On my Pioneer head unit, I'm running 120Hz crossover and +5 (out of +6) of output. Then, control the volume with the sub gain wheel, and leave the crossover at a 120Hz. For my vehicle, the sweet spot is at a needle-width below half-way. I have found this technique helped smooth out the volume curve on this sub; letting it respond to the upper and lower end bass notes evenly without the "beat" bass notes being too loud or maxing out the speaker travel. Previously, I was missing some volume in the bass tones and the beat bass notes were a little too loud. I prefer a smooth, more even bass response across the frequency range. ... show more

  • Excellent Addition When Space Comes at a Premium
This is an excellent sub if you evaluate it for what it is, not for what it isn't. What I mean by that is if you don't understand how subs work and you expect this thing to turn your car into some thumpty-dumpty nonsense that half the neighborhood hears as you drive down the street, you are going to be disappointed and think this thing is a piece of junk. However, if you are looking to fill out the bottom end of your sound system and you don't have a lot of space to do it with, this is going to be just about the best option you have. That said, I would not recommend putting this in a suburban; it might not fill that amount of space too well. This is how I set everything up in my Altima: Head unit: Pioneer FXHBT Components: Alpine SPS Series 6 1/2's in the doors and 6x9's in the rear deck. This sub underneath the passenger seat. I was already impressed with my system before I added this sub to it. However, I wanted to add some bass and take some of the strain and distortion out of my components. Set my low pass filter to the sub at 125 Hz so all of the adjustment came through the remote, and I set my high pass filter to 80 Hz. Turned the gain to about 12 o/clock, and the frequency to somewhere about 90 Hz.I would not recommend turning up the gain much beyond half for most songs because when you do, you get more of that hollow "whop," type sound. This took all of the distortion out of my system, and I added a lot of bass, even after taking the bass boost setting back to zero. This sub handles both the "punchy," bass as well as the "rolling," bass very well. Once you get everything tweaked how you want it, you can take things up way beyond a comfortable listening level. If you don't want to rattle the neighborhood, but you want to add some low end, even to your aftermarket system, and you don't have the space and/or money for an amp and enclosure, this may be the best option you have. ... show more

  • I am satisfied with the product so far
While it is not heavy sound, the smooth bass response is pleasing. I am satisfied with the product so far. Take some work to do all the wiring, and the remote trigger wire is the most challenging. Mine was not out of the radio, but had to go to the ignition switch wiring to connect. Stock radios do not come with line out RCA connections. You must connections to speaker wires, and also order a module to reduce the signal to preamp level. Do not look for support. Instructions are a little difficult to pick out, multiple languages in each step. and I wrote for help, without any response in over a week now. That was the seller I wrote to. ... show more

  • Loud enough to rattle my rear view mirror.
Very punchy and clean sounding bass. If your front speakers lack mid-bass then you may find difficulty blending in your subs without being over bearing. You'll need something like this and the output was quite impressive. It will also help make all the bass sound as if it's up front rather than localized behind you. The closest I could compare it with would be an 8" Sundown SD sub in sealed box twice as large with twice the power. This is as clean as the SD and more efficient (98db efficient in car) but not as loud below 50hz but considering the application, size and power it's still quite impressive. Don't let the 50 watts rms rating scare you over another that is rated 150 watts rms because of differences in speaker sensitivity and in order to hear a noticeable difference between either of same efficiency would mean at least 300-500 watts to have the headroom necessary to achieve a noticeable level of output because music is dynamic so only the highest peaks of musical output at full volume with proper gain will yield those short bursts of maximum power from your amp. So you need 10 db's increase to be twice as loud, 64 watts is 108db's, then it takes 1024 watts to be 120db's...about twice as loud. At moderate levels, you may only be using 10 watts on average. Point is, don't think too hard about amp power when the difference is within a few hundred watts. It takes a lot of power to get twice as loud and 50 watts for this sub did quite well throughout the volume range with 1/2 to 3/4 gain. If you plan on keeping stock radio and speakers, this will make the sound much more full and rich or for anyone that doesn't want to sacrifice any useable space in their car. ... show more

  • Edit: Died in less than 6 months.... Original: Amazing for its size and simple install!(Need to buy RCA cables as well)
Edit: 2 Stars I have owned this product for a few months and it has already died... Have shipped it back for repairs and will see how it turns out... Cost $38 for shipping it to them for repairs and they will not reimburse me for that. So... having to pay 20% of product value to fix an issue that is their fault is pretty ridiculous... but.. what else am I going to do... Original: 5 stars: " Put this behind the passenger seat in my 93 NA Miata. Absolutely love it. Have it paired up in my Miata with: - Pioneer TS-A1675R 6-1/2" 3-Way TS Series Coaxial Car Speakers in the doors - 2 of the Pioneer TS-A878 3 1/2 Inch 2-Way Speakers In each of the headrest - Pioneer DEHX9600BHS CD Reciever with Full-Dot LCD Display as the head unit I absolutely love the sound in my new to me Miata now! ------- Oh The only bad thing is it doesnt come with RCA cables so you will have to buy those as well. • Ok.....good option if space is limited
Agree with previous reviewer....this unit is adequate, and I guess as good as you can expect for its compact size, but not great. This is literally the only sub that will fit under the seat of my car, a Honda S2000. Right away I was disappointed by the guage of the power leads. That made me immediately believe that this thing might be underwhelming, and I wasn't too far off base. I cut the power lead short, and ran a heavy duty wire directly from the battery. The installation was fairly simple and straight forward. I do like that I can easily disconnect the wiring harness and store in my trunk. It fits perfectly under the seat and is very snug, so I did not feel the need to secure it down. Luckily, my stereo has a separate sub out and adjustment for that output only. That is critical, and cranking that up all the way makes the sub pretty good, and it did not distort at all. In summary, I would say that this is a good option if space is very tight, you have a separate sub out on your head unit and you have reasonable expectations. ... show more

  • Don't be naive thinking this would be an earth shattering woofer - a reminder for other absurd "reviews"
Don't be naive thinking this would be an earth shattering woofer. This is a compact underseat woofer for goodness sake. Please ignore those crazy "reviews" bashing this woofer. Know what you are buying before "reviewing". I think my low-cost Sharp home soundbar works better at pumping bass than this. The short on the bass quality - no difference to my stock speakers, but I must qualify my stock speakers are of good quality and driven by a top-end Pioneer 8870 headunit. So why did I buy a underseat woofer? Two reasons - (1) I am more than satisfied with my sound setup, but (like almost anyone) my stock speakers are on the doors, and while they are more than adequate to deliver the bass I want (the speakers won't crackle), they rattle the doors when pumping bass, and anyone will know the doors are full of moving parts and can never be taped down totally. (2) I do not want to waste space for a woofer enclosure, the box woofer fits perfectly under the seat and is out of sight, I'm not gonna to cramp the car with electronics and leave the car as next to useless for its intended purpose. Why did I buy this particular woofer? Two reasons - (1) Unorthodox technology and Looks cool. (2) It's thinner than other underseat woofers. My car seats are electrically powered and have little vertical space. this woofer fits just nice. There are cheaper units such as SSL, Boss, Soundstorm and more expensive ones like Apline, JBL. If you have space to put a sub in the truck or have high seats, get a 10-inch. If you want a powered woofer, go hunt down the excellent Infinity Basslink. Don't complain about this woofer....lol. ... show more

  • Waste of money
This was a complete waste of money and my time installing. If you absolutely need a compact Sub go with infinity. After install I could barely hear the difference from my old stock speakers. Trust me do not but. I tried selling it to a friend for half the price and he still didn't want it after he gave it a try. ... show more
