  • Indispensable landscape backpacking/travel lens, with a caveat
Color: Pro Cinema Wide G4
This review is for the wide angle on an iphone XS used with the compatible screw on case. I used this on a backpack trip last summer and it was a crucial addition as it allowed me to take pictures I would have otherwise never been able to capture. Totally expanded the awe of my photos without having to haul around a big old camera kit. But the problem is the blurry edges. Pros: - Design. This thing is well built and paired with the screw on case, makes for a great portable setup that's super easy to switch on and off, even on the move. Lightweight yet sturdy build. - Color and light: You loose nothing quality wise with color and light. If anything, this lens can punch up some of that. Cons: - Very blurry on the edges. If you're using as a hobbyist, this may not be an issue. You can see in my samples. I use these as computer backgrounds and sadly, it irks me all the time when I observe them. This is even cutting off the top and bottom at these have been formatted from 4:3 to 16:9. This is with the screw-on case so can't blame the fit. Conclusion: There's a reason why high quality pro wide angle lens cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. This won't get you there. I had to make the call of either 1) hauling around my Panasonic G85 and purchasing a $750 wide angle lens or 2) buying this little guy for not much $ and carrying something that weighed barely anything. i still stand by the choice even though I'm bothered by the blurriness. Maybe in 10 years when I'm still bothered by blurriness, I'll regret it. With phone upgrades still being astronomically expensive and camera kits costing and weighing much more, this lens has its purpose. ... show more

  • Excellent Lens for Mobile Photography
Color: Pro Portrait Tele G4
This is a excellent, well-made and easy-to-use protrait/tele lens. In keeping with the adage, “the best camera is the camera thats with you” carrying add-on lenses for our smart phones really increases the versatility, creativity and enjoyment of our camera phones. I bought this to go with my iPhone XS Max. The clip works well and is very stable on the phone, even though it can block a some screen functions of the camera app. I have been using Moment lenses over the years and I’d say without a doubt that Blackeye is right on par with their quality. If I wasn’t already immersed in their system of lenses and cases, I would definitely be buying Blackeye lenses. The only caveat that I would add is that if you are looking for a telephoto for landscape or wildlife photography you are going to be a bit disappointed because of softness around the edges. You can use this limitation (Due to physics?) in your favor by always shooting your subject in the middle, and then crop the image in post-processing to make it compositionally stronger (eg, rule of thirds) and eliminate some of the soft edges. The center of the frame is very sharp and picks up a lot of detail, which was very impressive. Blackeye has a few advantages over the Moment system. First, you don’t need a dedicated case for the lenses, which saves you extra cost. The other reason is that Blackeye lenses are priced more competitively compared to Moment. If I am not mistaken, it seems like the Blackeye lens gives you a bit more reach over the Moment telephoto. If you are willing to live with the softer edges and a tiny bit of your screen being blocked by the clip when its on the iPhone 2x lens, you can’t go wrong with the Blackeye portrait/tele lens. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their options with a camera phone. ... show more

  • Don't let the design fool you, this is an outstanding wide-angle adapter!
Color: Pro Cinema Wide G4
I was looking for a wide-angle adapter for my new iPhone 8 Plus and needed a versatile, but high-quality device to get much more out of my photography and videography. A friend recommended the Black Eye product line, which I had not heard of, and I bought it with an included coupon. This is the latest-generation, and highest quality wide-angle lens that Black Eye makes, and It attaches to your phone with a spring-loaded clip. You then align it by simply adjusting its position relative to your camera lens and check the live results in your favorite photo / video app.. Since it's a clip-on device, you can use it easily with dual-lens smartphones and just move it from lens to lens as needed, and take it off of your camera quickly and easily. It's a beautifully-designed product, and feels solid with its metal and glass components. I have already run a number of video and photo tests with it and the imagery is very sharp, with no perceptible lens distortion and straight "leading lines" on the sides and edges of the frame. I have not yet created some of the "production-level" videos and photos that I'll be shooting within the next few weeks, so I'll be sure to update the review at that time. But my initial impression is that this is an excellent lens adapter for the price, especially with some of the competing products recently increasing their prices. ... show more

  • Not Very Functional with iPhone 12 Pro Max
There are two different problems when trying to use these lenses with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. First if you have a case it won't work at all as the case has a raised lip around the lenses to protect them when you set the phone down and the lens will not rest flat over it. Second, it is next to impossible to get the lens centered exactly centered over the camera lens which creates an obstruction over the image you are trying to capture. I believe there are other kits out there that include a case that the lenses attach to so you never have to worry about centering the lens. Although they are pricier I would recommend going that route. ... show more

  • I'd Buy A Moment Instead
Color: Pro Portrait Tele G4
I bought this lens specifically to compare it to others for portrait usage. For the money, I'd definitely buy a Moment instead. The attached image is a comparison (composite, one image pasted partially over the other) between this lens and the Moment 58mm tele on my iPhone SE. The focal length is nearly the same, but the Black Eye lens has a lot of smearing near the edges whereas the Moment lens is probably acceptably sharp for most purposes all the way to the edge. The lantern and post are about ten feet away and the lantern is about the same size as a person's head, so that should give you a sense of the magnification provided by this lens. ... show more

  • Doesn't work for iPhone 12 mini
Color: Pro Cinema Wide G4
The lens works for the primary camera. But there's a gap/spacing between the lens and the phone camera because of the clamp, so the lens doesn't work for the wide angle camera on the iPhone since the ring of the pinhole is picked up by the wide-angle camera. So it's completely useless for an iPhone 12 because using the lens on the primary is less wide angle than the built-in wide-angle phone camera, and the lens doesn't work for the wide-angle phone camera. I returned the lens. ... show more

  • Excellent starter pack for mobile photographers
I did quite a bit of photography a few years ago and stopped because I had to carry around my fat DSLR. I’ve resorted to using my iPhone which takes good enough pictures. I heard about lens kits and heard about Black Eye so decided to give it a try. Immediately I was impressed with the quality of the packaging and obviously the lens’ themselves. The actually carrying case is made from this weatherproof-feeling soft leather case and is a great size to clip onto my pants or backpack (yes it has a clip). It comes with a few accessories, but let’s talk about the lens’. Now, the equipment is not going to make you a professional photographer (sorry), however it is an excellent tool for adding versatility to your photography. I plan on taking these with me during my next international travel and will most likely film with these lens’ and take selfies :) ... show more

  • Performs As Advertised, Fun Accessory
Color: Pro Portrait Tele G4
I bought this product for my wife's birthday. My thinking was that the Black Eye || Pro Portrait Tele G4 Clip-on Zoom Lens would be an easy way for her to enhance her enjoyment of her iPhone's camera, and I wasn't wrong. The lens does just what it says and she's been having fun with it. Only reason I've laid off giving it five stars is we haven't owned it very long. ... show more
