  • Good value, good for practice, not professional grade so don’t expect pro grade results
Color: 10 Colors
Compared to Winton oil paints these are better. These are not professional grade, so you can’t judge them with professional grade paints. Some colors are quite pigmented like the red. The ultramarine is a bit disappointing, just didn’t have that intensity. The cerulean and viridian are hues, not actual single pigments. Texture wise they are on the stiffer side, but smooth, not gritty. For students practicing this is fine. But if you want a better experience without spending a fortune get the Phoenix artist grade oil paints, which are smoother and much higher pigment load. ... show more

  • Excellent oil paints, I’m impressed
Color: 10 Colors
These are excellent oil paints, especially for the price. They are well-pigmented, and the texture is neither too goopy nor dry and chunky. The colors are intense and match expectations for the standardized names; ie, Ultramarine Blue looks like an Ultramarine Blue. The tubes themselves are well made with nice big caps. I did have trouble opening the tiny foil seals on the tube openings; the little tab would rip off without the rest of the foil, so I had to make a mess with punching through the foil and pulling the foil out. I like the color selection in this set, except I wish there was a cool red like Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose instead of the warmer hued Scarlet, which is the only red. I’d give up the black and add the cool red. The colors are listed on the tubes: Titanium White PW6, Lemon Yellow Hue PY3, Scarlet PR21, Ultramarine PB29, Cerulean Blue Hue PB15:3, Prussian Blue PB27, Viridian Hue PG7/PY3, Yellow Ochre PY42, Burnt Umber PBr7, Ivory Black PBk9. Lightfastness and opacity ratings are on the tubes, also. Lightfastness is either ++ or +++. Opacity is what you would expect from the pigments used. I ran out of Gamsol while testing these paints, so make sure you know you have plenty of a brand of Odorless Mineral Spirits (OMS) for thinning and cleaning these oil paints. They aren’t the water-soluble kind of paints. There are various brands sold in art stores, but I recommend Gamsol. Paint with oils in a well-ventilated space, because even the OMS has fumes that you don’t want to overdo breathing in, even though they’re odorless. Also, you’ll need a couple of hog bristle brushes that are stiffer in order to push around and spread the oil paints. A mixing palette is good to have, also. I’ve noticed Phoenix has many canvases and canvas boards for sale on Amazon, and I’ve heard they’re quite good quality. For a beginner, a canvas board is most economical, and a beginner probably will benefit using a tabletop or sturdy standing easel with parts that will lock your painting surface onto the easel. ... show more

  • Vibrant oils for beaches and Oceanscapes
Color: 20 Colors
The Phoenix studio oil paint set is exactly what I needed for my ocean and beach paintings. The 20 colors in this set are generous in size (50 mL tubes), and they squeeze out smoothly with a buttery texture that blends beautifully on the canvas. The pigmentation is strong and vibrant, which really makes my seascapes come alive – the blues layer into rich, deep waters, while the whites hold their brightness for foamy surf and glowing clouds. I especially love how these paints hold their body without getting chalky, so I can build up texture for crashing waves or sand dunes. They mix well, too, letting me create those subtle sea foam greens and sunset pinks that I see here in Florida. Drying time is what you’d expect from professional oils – slow enough to blend and rework, but not so long that it feels endless. If you love painting, oceanscapes, or beaches, this set gives you the range, quality, and smooth handling you need. It’s a professional quality kit that inspires me every time I sit down at the easel. ... show more

  • Toxic smell v other similar oils
Color: Yellow Pale
The paint is dry and creamy which is 5 stars but the smell is so toxic I can’t even use it. I’ve used all the cheap pulls and almost all the mid to high end oils and it’s just too strong, Which is ashamed because it is a decent quality for the price. I tried multiple colors to make sure but unless you are painting outside it will make you sick. I use odorless thinner and fans but this is just too strong. ... show more
