A friend drilled a hole in a glass brick years ago and stuffed the inside with miniature lights. We love this as a Christmas decoration, but have had to put pads under it because it gets so hot with 100 incandescent bulbs. One of the problems I have discovered with LED light strings is that they have the "transformer" in the wire (typically by the male plug. I also wanted to cut the wire at the other end (by the female plug), and that was also possible with this light string. My 5-foot white artificial tree came with white incandescent lights - the look was a little bland, and the incandescents weren't energy-efficient. I chose to unstring the incandescent lights, and replace them with 3 strands of Philips LED colored lights. It made a huge difference in the appearance of the tree. To the naked eye, there is a detectable 60 cycle per second flicker of the LED bulbs, but it is slight and the eye/brain quickly gets used to it. The lights do not photograph well because of the flicker, though. The picture I have attached shows how my phone camera captures them - the photo shows a halo effect which a human doesn't see, and also some bulbs that are unlit - although that is also never apparent in real time. If you want a good value set of energy-efficient small LED Christmas lights, I certainly recommend the Philips. ... show more
