  • Work of Art and it WORKS GREAT
UPS had just left and I unboxed my Phanteks PH TC14PE. I must have sat there 10 minutes just looking it over. This thing is a work of art. Beautiful. It is very well made. Tight manufacturing tolerances and an unblemished Blue finish. Packed like it was glass, in it's factory box. You hardly know where to grab it to get it out. I had watched the youtube videos on installation and was pretty sure of my actions, but you always come across a part or piece that stumps you. So I grab the instructions from the box, Looked over both sides , It slowly dawned on me ..I don't speak either of these languages.(?) My wife seeing my puzzled look reached into the box and handed me another one and said " Here try this one it's in "English and British" Again I get the puzzled look (?) I thought they were the same? She just laughed and walked away. Duh! She got me. But, the Phanteks comes with 2 boxes full of hardware. Everything you could ever possibly need, except a long screw driver.. One is marked AMD the other Intel. And some generic parts for both. As for the Intel stuff, (?) I know nothing. My last Intel was a 100mhz Pentium..a looong time ago. But, the AMD stuff was simple. It uses the standard AMD back plate. Watch the youtube video, it's great...and one is on the AM3+ motherboard. I have yet to punish my new FX-8350 to see what she will do. But I can tell you the temps look really good and it is silent. Unlike the Corsair A-70 it replaced. I only had a chance to run "Heaven" Bench mark at max everything before I went to work,I did run Prime 95 for the 32M setting but it was so quick there wasn't any temp rise. Watching "hardware Monitor" I saw that it did spin up for startup, but it is so quiet I never heard it. I opened the case door..Nope, still can't hear it. I used all the cables, the 2 to 1 splitter and the very long cables that come on the fans. Some have said the long cables are a problem, but I found I could lay the fans on the HDD cage and plug the 4 pin into the CPU header then as I mounted them on the cooler push the extra cable into the slot at the top of my case and into the cable management area behind the motherboard, so..I like the long cables. Mounting was easy. remove the AMD clips, put 4 screws to the old back plate (with spacers and bracket)plug in cpu fan, put cooler in place /with paste, 2 screw nuts to mount cooler. Put the fans on and DONE! I did use the diamond based Thermal Paste that came with the cooler. My FIRST time away from AS-5. We will see. I'll be back to update as soon as I get a day off to test better. So far...I really like it. It is LARGE, no doubt. It fit over my Corsair Low Profile ram no problem. Inside my Corsair 600t Case..plenty of room. Even enough to leave the Bitfenix 230mm Pro on the side case door. I did read reviews for about 3 weeks, before I chose this cooler. It is either 1st 2nd or 3rd (back and forth) But very close both ways with the Noctua, and Silver Arrow Extreme. I think variance in installations perhaps. That was good enough for me to pick on æsthetics. This cooler is beautiful! The "other" selling point is "It's one of the Top Three" CPU Air coolers in the world. I was sold..and still am. Very happy with this cooler. I will post photos. Note: Installed, Measuring from the face of the motherboard, to the top of the fins is 6 3/4 ". Upgraded case to Corsair Obsidian 900D in Oct. 2013 Update: Oct. 26th 2013, Optimized air flow and put Phanteks 140mm's as case fans. FX-8350 on AMD "STRESS Test", Temps 51C all 8 cores at 4.5ghz, after 20 minutes. With room temp of 23C. Great CPU cooler, Highly recommended! Update2: OC'd FX-8350 to 4.7ghz with CPU temp at 53C during 8 core stress test after 25 minutes. ... show more

  • New King of Air Cooling, at least for me...
This is a perfect example of the K.I.S.S method in action. It is a simple design much like the Noctua NH-D14 and for good reasons. Did Phanteks steal Noctua's design? Who's to say. We will never know that answer. However, Phanteks took the PH-TC14PE to the next level that Noctua missed out on. Aesthetically speaking, I feel this cooler hit a homerun over all the coolers on the market with the look and color options available. I did a lot of research before purchasing this cooler trying to decide to go with air or water. I like the cooling power of water, but like the zero risk of water leakage or water pump failure air doesn't have to deal with. Plus I like the fact that air will continue to work passively even if the fans stop working for some reason and the PH-TC14PE is a lot quieter than the H100 using it's stock fans. Every review that I read that compared the Phanteks PH-TC14PE to the Corsair H100 and Noctua NH-D14, the Phanteks was 1 degree behind the H100 and often beating the NH-D14 but only by 1-2 degrees itself. I was willing to sacrafice 1 degree for the the ease of mind of NOT ever having to change a water pump or worry about a leak in my system. The PH-TC14PE isn't a NH-D14 slayer, but it does perform on or slightly higher than the Noctua level by a couple degrees (+/- 1-2C). Does Phanteks' Patented P.A.T.S (Physical Antioxidant Thermal Shield) or their Patented C.P.S.C (Cold Plasma Spraying Coating Tech) make the difference for it to be that much better than the Noctua NH-D14 or the Silver Arrow? I honestly can't say that was the whole reason it works, but does it work? The answer is: YES!!! Is it more of a marketing stragedy? PROBABLY. However, this cooler is very quiet with the dual 140mm fans that push a lot of air and keeps my Intel Core i7-3770K (3rd gen, Ivy Bridge) at 68-72C at 4.6GHz, 76-80C at 4.7GHz under 100% load. I have pushed my CPU up to 4.8GHz and the temps were around 84-88C. Very good being that Ivy Bridge (22nm) produces more heat than Sandy Bridge (2nd gen, 32nm). The 4.8GHz OC was stable, but I don't need to run it that high daily. I do run at 4.6GHz or 4.7GHz daily and the temps have not been a problem at all. I was able to render a 15 minute 1080P vacation video of the family with full effects and transitions in 3 mins, 40 secs. This cooler keeps those temps very under control to allow that type of activity and frequency specs. The installation was very straight forward. If you have installed a cooler before, you won't have any problems and if you haven't installed a cooler before, just follow the instructions (which could be the only issue I have with this unit). Not the best, but not the worst instructions either. Use the internet to watch videos on how to install if need be. I believe Phanteks assumes if you are installing this device, you have some knowledge of how it goes together. That was an observation I made of the instructions. The included thermal paste is of good quality and I recommend using it. I can't say enough on how pleased I am with this cooler. Plus, I am pretty sure you will find a color that suits your needs to match or give contrast to your system, but is yet fully functional and is able to handle almost anything you throw at it processor wise. I am sure if I was to try for 4.9GHz or 5.0GHz with my Ivy Bridge, the cooler probably couldn't handle it as the 22nm die just produces more heat faster than the cooler can remove. This is when one should be considering a more aggressive type of CPU cooling anyway with Ivy Bridge atleast. The PH-TC14PE will handle pretty much any overclock the average home/novice user will throw at it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND... Especially at the $79.00 price point I paid. ... show more
