I finally burned out my Dremel tool after close to 50 years of use. I couldn't justify spending a lot for a new Dremel, so based on the reviews of the Phalanx unit, I decided to purchase it. I immediately put the tool to some pretty hard use fabricating a couple of steel brackets for my motorcycle. The Phalanx came through with flying colors. I used it the cut-off wheel for cutting steel, grinding, and polishing. It is surprisingly powerful (and as a result a bit heavier than expecting although not a problem), has a wide variety of attachments, and is good quality. One of the things I found particularly useful for the work I was doing is the flexible cable attachment which allows you to use the tool like a dentist's drill without the need to hold the power unit - just place it on the bench, attach the flexible cable, and attach the grinder, engraver, cut-off wheel to the end of the cable and operate like a dentist's drill. It was tremendously useful. One suggestion, though - if you're going to use the flexible cable, I suggest lubricating the inner cable periodically with some WD40 or other oil. Dremel recommends doing this with their flex cable (which incidentally costs more than the entire Phalanx grinder kit). I am very pleased with my purchase and pleasantly surprised by the quality and performance.

The tool works well enough. But frankly, I'm a little disappointed. The tool is plenty powerful enuff to drive much larger bits (viz. the small grinding bits and cut-off wheels that I use with my 3/8" drill). But the chuck is too small to accept anything but miniature bits. And the package's miniature bits seem like toys to me. I don't think that they will hold up very well. The rotary sanding cylanders kept creeping off of their spool, which was irritating. I would recommend only using the lowest speed. That will maximize the life of your attachments. IMHO, higher speeds are needed for only very specialized applications (which I haven't encountered yet). And high speeds definitely require high-end attachments (viz. dental quality). I haven't tried the cable extension yet. I'm not recommending that you buy a higher-priced tool. This tool seems plenty strong, but is more larger and more unweildy than I expected. If I were to do it over, I would look for a tool (perhaps corded) that is slimmer and lighter, and provides a more pen-like control -- and which would, ideally, have a larger chuck (viz. a full 1/4"). If all else failed, I had expected to use this system for manicuring finger/toe nails. Not sure how well this system will work for that, now.

Item arrived early. Opened it up and put it to work. The kit has a nice variety of attachments and the extension fits in snuggly and works smoothly. Tool did get warm after prolonged use by not hot. I haven't put it to heavy use yet but so far so good.

Originally, I bought this tool to actually help me with my dentures (damn that was hard to write). I was not receiving the help I needed with them. I have worked with a flex shaft, so I had a good idea of what I was doing. I ordered the Phalanx rotary tool and took care of the issues myself. (Don't try this at home kids). Just what I needed. It's a very good tool. I can't wait to try it with other projects. It has a hanger on it if you have a place to hang it. It is not heavy though.

Im not sure how this product has so many great reviews. It is as expected for a tool of its price. It worked all of about 2 weeks. The first part to immediately break the first day of use was the pen extension. Worked one time. The second i took it off the entire piece shot apart loaded by the spring inside. Next, the locking mechanism that holds the attachments, literally the most important part of the device lasted 2-3 weeks. Of probably 1-2 days a week of use for maybe 2 hours a day, stopped locking attachments in place and the second it started rotating it would unlock itself and the attachment would dangerously spin in place waiting to fly off and take an eye out. Its simple enough to use, but of course a dremel is a dremel. The wheel is simple to use because its a wheel. The speed variable isnt important because the device doesnt have enough power for any speed except for wide open to be useful. Size and design, all normal for the type of device youre buying. Now normally i would read a review like this and think "this is just a bias review from a negative nancy that would have been hyper critical no matter what" and "you knew what you were buying", but listen yall. If you cant afford a real dremel do yourself a huge favor and just wait until you can. I bought a name brand dremel yesterday and im coming back to write this review because i was so impressed by the quality, the feel, the function and power and intuitive ease of use, that i felt it my civic duty to warn everybody just to spend a little extra when you buy your tools no matter how small the hobbies youre using them for, and you'll save yourself so much frustration. Youre just throwing your money into the aether when you buy cheap mass manufactured chinese crap like this. Ive had some cheap tools that were great from harbor freight, chicago electric and bauer specifically where you can spend $20 and get a tool that would last a casual hobbyist 10 years. I CANNOT EXPRESS ENOUGH THE JUNK THAT THIS TOOL IS. If you read all of my rant, thank you for listening
