These are simple shades that are well constructed with simple chain operation. No spring mechanisms to go haywire! I bought the tan/brown color (I forget if it had a specific name) and the white to see which I'd like better. I needed to block the sun in my south facing kitchen bc it's bright and very hot, even with triple pane windows. The brown is more see through which is great bc we can still see the view and what's going on outside. Both colors cut the heat considerably, but the white almost completely blocks it. The brown lets in ~20% more heat than the white in direct sun. Still a huge improvement! The chain is a smidge on the noisy side, but perhaps all chain mechanisms are that way. These are the first I've had of this kind so I can't make a good comparison. I've had the shades a month with no issues and have ordered more for the 7 other kitchen windows. So far I'm very pleased and would recommend them! ... show more

First, the instructions were awful. I ended up assembling the whole thing, held it up to the door and marked the brackets and drilled it on. The directions had no measurements or anything to go by. As for the shade, it was exactly what I was looking for. It is light filtering and still somewhat see through. The sun rises through our back door and was super bright in the mornings, and this shade blocks the sun perfectly without being too dark. At night you can not see out of the shade, but you can see in. I picked the grey color and it looks great. The chain function is smooth and the parts overall are great quality. I ordered 4 of these and am VERY pleased. When measuring your (inside) measurements, measure exactly and they will fit. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to "allow" a quarter inch this way or other way, so I erred on the side of caution and ordered a little short. It worked out fine, but I could have measured my exact width. I absolutely LOVE these. I ordered 5% screen and they are perfect. I have direct sunlight coming in on 3 of the 4 shades. They diffuse the sun, work great mechanically (manually), and have good "see-thru" ability. I ordered black because I WAS concerned with the sun blockage. I will order these again. After I hung one, it was no problem. I do agree the instructions could be better. (I do best with visual illustrations and these were lacking.) I went online to you-tube and that helped. But they really are easy once you've hung one, you're good to go. I really, really am happy with them. ... show more

These seem well-made and, while it is true that the instructions are not that clear, we found hanging them to be easy. When the shades are down you can see the outlines of what is outside reasonably well--just as the pictures indicate--but when the sun is directly on them we can't see out very well, and of course that is when we will be principally using them. This shade is a great purchase for our apartment. Blocks the sun and light when shining in our window. Make sure to allow space for mounting brackets. They say allow +or - .2 inch. Mine was plus .2 and had to scribe the mounting bracket into the window frame.
