I was dubious when I got this since I saw a few reviews that said squirrels got in by hanging upside down, so I purposely got the green one with the chimney instead of the weather vane one, which has less for them to grab onto. I’ve had it for over a month and I’m so glad I kept it. I have mine hanging on a shepherd’s hook out in the front yard. So I appreciated that it comes with a thing for hanging it (it also comes with an accessory for mounting on a pole if that’s what you want). The squirrels have definitely tried, and failed, to raid it. And they are smart and destructive so I really thought they’d find a way in but it’s been over a month and still holding fast. And it’s metal so they can’t chew their way in. (Also just a tip, you can prevent them from even trying if you keep a dedicated squirrel feeder nearby. They won’t waste their time and energy trying to get in if they have their own food) And I have to say, I have enjoyed watching the birds more than I thought I would. It’s fun, in addition to the usual chickadees and sparrows, I’ve gotten woodpeckers and cardinals too (it’s winter so that’s about as exotic as we will get around here but it’s still fun). And you can also set the sensitivity of the door so that it closes on larger birds if you want. (personally I leave it at the least sensitive setting because they’ve all been surprisingly polite, they basically take turns grabbing a seed and flying away with it so the next guy can get in). The only thing I’d change if I could do it again would be to buy the larger one so that they can feed from both sides at once. But this size is cheaper and was a good first foray into bird feeding. I really like it and am glad I bought it.

We have had bird feeders for years and I had found a perky pet feeder that was pretty close to great at being squirrel proof, but not completely. It also was emptied so often it was not convenient if we were away for a day or two. Then we found this adorable cabin seed holder. It has completely stopped squirrel activity and can hold enough seed for several days. The feeder bar can hold several birds at a time and I just love how cute it looks with its copper roof. Since retiring, we pretty much live our summers in the back yard and watching the birds is a favorite pastime. This feeder has made it a pleasure.

Tip1: using JB Weld original, line the outside of the window plate located on the inside of the bird feeder (see photo). This will prevent the squirrel from breaking the window in and gaining access to the seed. You may need to put a little JB Weld on the outside where the window snaps on. That should stop the crazy aggressive squirrel. Tip2: Using duct tape, line the inside of the feeder where panels meet. This is important to prevent the squirrel from digging seed out the cracks. It’s a tight space on each end of the feeding trough, but if you can seal that area it will make a difference. Review Packaging: It wasn’t packaged very well. As you can see from the pictures the box was damaged severely. It had also been dropped causing the corner of the feeder to be bent in substantially. There was NO padding to protect the feeder. After bending the side of the feeder into acceptable condition, I discovered the chimney latch, which holds the roof on wouldn’t tighten. This requires bending the roof to a steeper pitch. After that it seems to fit snug and secure. These two things were quite disappointing. Some extra care and packaging would go a long ways. After making the modifications listed above and bending the birdfeeder into acceptable condition, it seems to be a good quality. But how does it perform? That poor squirrel wore himself out trying to find a way inside. Not only does the perch drop down to close the feeding trough, but the slick surface of the sides and roof makes it nearly impossible for the squirrel to find a place to grip. After many attempts he’s no longer interested. Video attached of him sitting on the perch in disappointment. Important notes: I chose to pole mount my feeder as this provides even more squirrel proof protection. If it’s hung by the supplied hanger, the squirrel will grip onto the hanger with its back legs and hang down to eat out of the trough. The hanger has funky strange bend on one end. It will fit but you will need to get creative in figuring it out. I know it looks like it won't work, but it will. Mounting: Use a pole that is 3/4 of an inch outside diameter (OD) maximum. If you buy a pole at the hardware store that states 3/4 of an inch it will be over 1 inch on the outside diameter and won’t fit in the mounting hole on the feeder. This is because they advertise the INSIDE diameter of the pipe (ID). I ended up buying a galvanized 1/2 ID pole, which was about 5/8 outside diameter. It works well but it a little loose. I'll probably wrap the end with duct tape to take up the extra space. Honestly the hole on the feeder should be at least 1 1/8 of an inch to accommodate 3/4 ID advertised polls. I gave this feeder 4 stars because of the few issues and poor packaging. If these few things were addressed by the manufacturer it would be a solid 5 star product. I do recommend the purchase of this product, just be ready to do a few modifications before putting it to use.

The construction is really sturdy, it holds plenty of seed and it looks very pretty. We hung it from a tree branch but, very quickly, the squirrels were all over it; they hung upside down from the branch, gobbling everything up and leaving nothing for the birds. In fact, I watched squirrels actually chasing the birds away. We bought an extra long hook so the squirrels couldn’t reach it from the branch but they slid down the hook and onto the roof of the feeder and we were back to square one. So, now basically war has been declared and we had to get the “big guns” out. I went out and wiped the roof of the feeder (as well as the hook) with some old olive oil and then ran back inside and watched. Within minutes, one squirrel was back. He did his usual acrobatics and grabbed the hook, slid down to the roof of the feeder and right off and onto the ground. Ha! We win (for now) :). Anyway, the feeder is really nice.

We maintain 8 different bird feeders right near our kitchen door (so we can look outside while seated at the kitchen table). Many feeders now-a-days, are geared towards the very small birds. That's a shame really, because we often watch cardinals, blue jays, robins, and doves just sitting around on the grass, waiting for scraps of seed to fall from the feeders while the smaller birds are feasting. Those birds are just too large to fit and balance on those small perches that most regular bird feeders have. I ordered this particular Perky-Pet 339-1SR Squirrel-Be-Gone II Home Style Bird Feeder and when it arrived, I was quite surprised at how large it really is - which is not a negative (don't get me wrong here). It is absolutely solidly constructed (it's not cheap feeling at all). Now do be advised that once you fill this feeder to the top, it becomes quite heavy (the total weight being around 8-12 lbs depending on the bird food used. So make sure you have a sturdy scenario available to hang this baby on. Another nice feature on this bird feeder is the fact that you can adjust the lever pressure by the feeding area (4 slots/settings) so that you can adjust the weight needed for it to close off the feeding area (i.e. weight of the squirrels). They have it set to the strongest setting by default, so you will need to observe what's using the feeder to make sure no birds are causing the level to shut off the food. Most squirels should cause the lever to push down and shut off the food cavities. But just in case the squirrels don't close the lever, you can adjust the weight needed by bringing it up a notch or two. Now do keep in mind that it may take up to a week before other birds (especially the large birds as mentioned above), discover and become comfortable using this Perky Pet feeder. You have to remember that they've been used to seeing the other slender bird feeders hanging out there for a long time, so like anything else, it takes time. I was frustrated at first when I observed that for the first few days, no birds flocked to the Perky Pet Feeder at all - but then, after a small period of time, the "word" was getting out among the bird community. So yes, I heartily recommend this bird feeder. It's easy to fill and lock and it should last a long time - only time will tell.

I was exhausted by crafty squirrels raiding our bird feeders! This feeder completely shut down their easy free meals! The feeder is attractive and very sturdy. The roof closure takes a little practice to get used to, but once you get the knack of it, it becomes routine. This feeder has a weight trigger and if anything heavier than a few song birds try to get seeds, it will automatically close! As others have stated, when it rains, the seeds will become wet and clumps will form that are messy and difficult to remove. I am thinking of buying a transparent 22" baffle that may keep the rain out. This feeder would be absolutely perfect if the designers could extend the roof and/or recess the seed tray to protect the seeds from the rain. My best solution has been to put less seed in the feeder so fewer seeds are ruined. The squirrels do get to enjoy the seed clumps, so it's not a complete waste... I do recommend this feeder as a solution to squirrel problems and preventing greedy larger birds from bullying the song birds!

Love this feeder! The set up, or assembly was super easy. It is well made, sturdy and, so far, squirrel proof. It is actually quite entertaining to watch the squirrels try to get at the sunflower seed! This feeder holds a substantial amount of seed, so you aren't filling daily. Plus, it's so cute! The first two I bought a couple of years ago were great. When I bought two more to replace them, they changed where the birds perch. They took out an important feature. The seed is gone within a few days. I mentioned this to the manufacturer. They said they often make changes to a product. You think they would have given me a refund for the two new feeders. DO NOT BUY THIS FEEDER!
