Features

  • Based on core principles of passion for photography, The All New Flagship APS-C model K-3 III continues a heritage of craftsmanship combined with todays new technologies.
  • The newly designed optical veiwfinder provides a 100% field of view and 1.05x image magnification. The veiwfinder offers a wide viewing angle comparable to full frame cameras with increased image brightness due to the improved reflectance of the pentaprism.
  • Top ISO sensitivity of 1.6 million provides image capture in low light situations and achieves excellent descriptive power in the entire sensitivity range. Multi-dimensional image space filtering reduces noise while leaving fine contours. It maximizes the resolution performance and reproduces the texture and details of the subject.
  • The HD PENTAX-DA 16-50mm F2.8ED PLM AW represents Pentax's top of the line STAR series, combining exceptional imaging power and image rendition with outstanding operability and environment- resistant performance which compensates various aberrations to a minimum and delivers sharp, clear images.
  • The PLM Pulse motor provides high speed focusin. This zoom lens incorporates a newly designed optical system which features a lighter, more compact focus-lens group. By driving this focus-lens group with an advanced PLM (Pulse Motor), it assures smooth, high-speed autofocus operation with minimized operational noise.
  • Compatible with in body shake reduction of the K series DSLR cameras. The Pentax digital SLR camera K series is equipped with in-body shake reduction SR / SR II. Any lens compatible with the K-series camera can benefit from image stabilization

  • Outstanding new DSLR from Pentax!
Color: Silver Style: Camera
This should be the K2, not 3-III. It has totally re-energized me to go out there and capture moments, because, as much as I loved my venerable K-3 OG, this is head and shoulders above it. Is a bit heavier, but much better autofocus. And the high-ISO is terrific; the picture of Mercury in the night sky is handheld with Sigma 18-300 at 300mm, ISO 102,000. This un-processed pic is not going to win prizes of course, but shows how good this camera can be. The other pics are un-processed also. All taken with the Big Sig lens. For people doing landscapes and birds, the dynamic range is great, the viewfinder is amazing, and the dials are so easy to use, it is like using a film camera again, but with all the benefits of digital. And it is a solid, weathersealed Pentax, made to use out in life, not just inside or in garden somewhere. What could be better - would be nice to be able to see the autofocus spot better. Wish it had the GPS/Astrotracer built in, although the link with the phone works great, so I was able to text pics to family right away after taken. But would probably use less battery if not having to use Wifi/Bluetooth to geotag the photos. I plan to capture a ton of moments with this awesome new camera! ... show more

  • Great Camera
Color: Black Style: Camera
I was using the DA*300mm f4 for the test shots I did here. I love this camera. It seems very well thought out. Pentax took their time to make sure what they're releasing is a quality product, and I think perhaps some of the things that could use a little improvement are exactly the kinds of things that firmware updates can address. When trying out a camera the grip isn't something I usually think about because I assume it will feel "quirky" in some way or other, and that I'll just "get use to it," as if it was made for some other hands. Not so with this camera. I found it immediately comfortable. I wasn't sure if I would like the touch screen, but I now see how useful they've made it. I love it. Also with the few tests I've done they've really hugely improved upon immediate transfer of images (even RAW) to a smartphone. The auto-focus is excellent. As expected, it's a super solid build. It's not silent like a mirrorless, but I think this is the first DSLR where the sound of the shutter was soft enough where birds aren't startled right at go. The menu takes a little getting use to as it's changed quite a bit, but there's nothing I haven't searched for that I didn't find with occasional use of the provided manual. Is it worth the price tag? For me it was. I have a bunch of Pentax lenses already and I wasn't going to wait six months for the price to maybe come down to try this out. Now that I have it I won't be returning it. :) ... show more

  • Photo taken with non-HD lens. Handheld, 6400 ASA. One source natural light through blinds.

Have the K3 and the K3 II as well. This unit is better. Still learning as there are distinct differences in key usage features. Battery grip for previous models will NOT fit. A quality upgrade.

  • Pentax K-3 MkIII Review
Color: Black Style: Camera
(Initial unboxing, indoor and outdoor testing) Pentax (Ricoh) stuck to their guns. Instead of making yet another "me too" mirrorless camera, Ricoh have decided to stick to doing what they do best- make an excellent DSLR. With this iteration of the K3, the wait was definitely worth it. True steps forward in design are under its amazingly tough and weatherproof magnesium shell. Oh you're going to love that grip and rock solid construction. It's a masterpiece. I have a full suite of Nikon and Canon DSLRS, as well as Pentax. I use whatever camera is suited best for leisure or pro work. Comparatively Pentax are the best built and most weather proof in their class compared to the other brands. It's just their brand strength, along with being backwards compatible to very old lenses. Pentax's weakness has always been autofocusing speed and tracking when comparing to Canon and Nikon. But I'm pleased to report that Pentax has finally, yes finally, caught up to both makers with the K3 Mk III. I've compared it directly to my Nikon D500 rig with a similar lens, and to my surprise the K3 Mk III certainly keeps up in the AF department (in good and poor light alike!) I didn't expect it to live up to the AF claims made by Ricoh, but it really does. Bout time Pentax! Image quality is the best I've seen from an APS-C sized sensor from Pentax, dynamic range and noise control are really impressive. It's even slightly better than the K70 (although not by much), which used to hold that crown in tandem with the KP. In comparison to the D500, it's definitely got an obvious edge in overall fine detail, and even high ISO in raw (although not by much). Together with the myriads of other refinements in responsiveness, menus, and overall handling and ergonomics, the K3 Mk III is truly the most impressive camera I've used or own from them so far. I wasn't a fan of the KP, and I wanted more from my K3's (I own both the I and the II as well). It's viewfinder is super bright and clear. Yes it's large for APS-C. Yet, forget the 1.05x magnification specification for a moment, the true highlight is how bright and clear and informative (modern) it is. The LCD overlay with all of the AF points leave a remarkable impression. Yep Ricoh made a big deal about it (perhaps they embellished), yet the improvements are real. Just as the K1 was a huge hit, I think the K3 Mk III will be known as the APS-C DSLR that Pentax users have really been waiting for. The K1 duo are impressive, but the K3 Mk III takes everything to an even higher level. Pentax users will not be let down. This is a true do it all very well DSLR that is at home on sports fields or in backcountry mountains. Shooting it side by side with my K3's and K5 II's, it makes them feel pedestrian in every metric of responsiveness from image playback to continuous AF speed. I can see why it took so long for Ricoh to get this camera out. It's a real leap forward this time, real practical increases from top to bottom in performance that don't require a micrometer to measure. You'll notice it, practically. Of course its not for everyone (what single camera ever is?) but its certainly right up there with the D500 as a jack of all trades DSLR that can get the jobs done. I wish there were more fast and quiet focusing lens options for Pentax like Nikon have, but who knows, maybe we'll get a few more options in the future. I'm pretty sure this camera is going to sell out everywhere once word spreads about it. It'll make the industry think twice about "moving on" from DSLR's that is for certain. And on that note, darn good for Ricoh to continue making DSLR's! Far as I see it the pro/enthusiast categories are split about 50/50 with DSLRs vs. Mirrorless options when it comes to preferences. To have only one maker continuing to make DSLR's would be a pity for the rest, but great for Ricoh. All they need to do now is pump up the lens options. Sigma should get on board and make more of their lenses available in the Pentax mount. I've a few of their new generation lenses and they are all impressive (the 100-400mm DG f/5-6.4 Contemporary especially for the price!). It would be nice to have more options. Since the K3 Mk III is so loaded there's no way I could go on about each item. It's much like their prior enthusiast DSLR's in this respect. Only this one is going to really make marks for its viewfinder, frame rate, AF tracking speed, and general responsiveness. The shutter/mirror cycle is so quiet and nice, it feels balanced and refined. The touch screen and updated menu's are icing on a glorious DSLR cake. Is it worth the $1,996.99 price tag? I think so, but of course that's up to you. Inflation is starting to take hold of the camera market, Ricoh/Pentax aren't the only makers raising prices. But to get a pro level APS-C performing camera this good, you're going to have to pay. It's better built than my Nikon D500 (and you can feel it immediately), and I'd trust it in the backcountry or extreme weather more. And the Nikon came out for the same price five years ago! No matter how you slice it that price is a chunk of change, but that outlay might have just bought you the best APS-C DSLR made by any maker to date. At this point I'll call it a tie between the D500 and K3 Mk III, giving a nod to the D500 on price (now), and a nod to the Pentax on build quality, it's optical viewfinder, menu system, and weather resistance. Remember, the D500 came out in Jan of 2016 for $1,999.99. That was five years ago, and it's still selling for $1,499.00 brand new. It's a fair price when you consider it is now five years later for the K3 Mk III, think about it! I'll update the review with some quality images very soon. So far it's definitely living up to the hype. ... show more

  • So happy Pentax stuck with DSLR and OVF
Color: Black Style: Camera
I love the viewfinder on the K3 Mark iii! I was in the market for a new camera and tried the mirrorless systems offered by the other brands and could not stand looking through the EVF, I felt very removed from the experience. Pentax stuck with a DSLR design and made an awesome camera. The auto focus is much improved over past models, which is nice. The camera is very customizable allowing you to make the camera work how you need it. Of course, the camera is very well built (it is a Pentax) and feels great in my hands. ... show more
