I'm generally a huge fan of Penn reels, but here's a big exception. A small reel like this with a narrow spool should be great for casting live bait and jigs, but the freespool on the 20N wasn't very free at all. It just didn't turn very well, like maybe a trace of drag was slightly engaged. That's a huge issue with a reel this size, but an even bigger issue is this: on its very first use, three out of the four pins connecting the reel to the foot came loose. If they would have used little screws I could have just tightened them up again and kept fishing, but they opted for these cheap pins, which are basically just cylinders that easily slide out of position. So the more I fished, the more wobbly the reel became, until it finally popped loose altogether (see photo). It's bizarre to me that their engineers didn't foresee this happening. I've also attached a photo with a more detailed view of the issue. I should reiterate, Penn generally makes fantastic reels. I'm not sure what the situation is with this Warfare 20N. Maybe I just got a defective one. I have no idea. But I would advise people to pay-up for a higher quality model. The Warfare 20N has a great price tag, but it's just not worth it. Spend a few extra bucks and get something you can fish with for years - as opposed to this one, which didn't last me a single day. ... show more

I decided to go for this particular reel because of its price point and based on the recommendations of friends who are experienced anglers. I just bought it to determine if vertical jigging is something I'd be interested in and I'm happy with the results so far. My only gripe is that the product arrived with a busted clicker - couldn't be turned off so it affected the free spooling. But since it was an easy fix, I just took care of it so I won't need to deal with the returns and shipping. Other than that, and with my little knowledge and experience in overhead reels, I'd say this is alright for starters. ... show more

As I don't spend nearly the time I'd like to on the river, I wanted reels Tha could be ready when I needed them. Can always rely on my Penns! Quality reel at a great price. Hard to beat a squall if you can find them and afford them but these have not let me down. Have 2 20n's for Potomac rockfish
