This is one of those tiny reels made to produce a strong drag in a small light package to take advantage of the thinner diameter spectra lines and much lighter/stronger carbon matrix custom rods. What is exceptional about it besides size and weight is the simple engineering of high quality durable components inside the reel. Who wants to either send a reel back to the manufacturer for maintenance every year or spend 6 hours taking apart a Rube Goldberg 300 tiny part Japanese or Taiwanese contraption that will be discontinued next year! this Penn reel is made in U.S.A. and will have parts for more than 10 years if they ever wear out! beats the pants off any of the competitor reels and is easy to maintain yourself plus it will never wear out unless you catch say 100 marlin or giant yellowfin! ... show more

Reel is as expected but i didnt know it was w Narrow. it seems as thought there is no trq40ld2 that is not a Narrow. still a great reel and great shipping

This reel is top notch. Brings in red snappers in like no other . Almost feels like cheating when you drop it in low gear .. and it is MADE IN THE USA!!!!!

    • TORQUE lives up to its' name /handle could be better/ Penn Torque 40NLD2
The Penn Torque series is durable yet light weight, with very good torque and drag output. However considering the price point and compared to other reels in this price bracket the handle is not very smooth. The handle is not much better than the Penn Fathom, so there is no real upgrade on this part for the extra price. The handle may be reliable but lacks smoothness after extensive jigging. The overall design could have been more ergonomic as the side plates are very block like and do not allow for comfortable line laying. The 2 speed feature shifts very reliably but there is some backplay in the handle. The spool bearings are very smooth and this reel can cast very well. There are aftermarket handle options out there to customize the reel to user preference, but at this price level I would of liked to see a better stock handle. This may not be the smoothest reel in its' class but it is arguably the most reliable. ... show more
