As you can see in the picture I have a few models to compare. The VII is a very smooth operation, has a very strong bail arm spring, and most importantly the line leaves the reel without any noticeable binding so avoids the tangles and “wind knots” on repeated plug casts. I think my Spinner V runs a bit rough compared to this and definitely knots up at times, especially without a swivel. This is noticeably more like the Slammer casting. The VII has a new line clip which seems effective although the older buttons were ok too. Maybe some overthinking but it works. The crank is a typical Penn handle and does a good job letting you pace your retrieve while maintaining a solid feel for feedback. What can I say about the seals? I don’t know yet, it needs some miles on it to evaluate along the way. FIVE STARS it’s a winner 🏆

recently purchased the PENN Spinfisher VI Spinning Fishing Reel, and so far, I am quite impressed with its performance. Here's why I would give it a four-star rating: Durable and Reliable: The construction of this fishing reel is top-notch. It feels solid and sturdy in my hands, giving me confidence that it can withstand tough fishing conditions. I have used it in both freshwater and saltwater, and it has held up exceptionally well. Smooth Drag System: The drag system on the Spinfisher VI is incredibly smooth and consistent. It provides me with the necessary power to handle big fish, allowing for a seamless fight and minimizing the chances of losing my catch. The drag knob is also easy to adjust, making it convenient in the heat of the moment. Excellent Line Capacity: The line capacity of this reel is impressive. It can hold a significant amount of line, giving me ample opportunity to target a variety of fish species. Additionally, the line lays nicely on the spool, preventing tangles and improving casting distance. Anti-Corrosion Protection: The Spinfisher VI reel incorporates a sealed body and spool design, preventing saltwater and other contaminants from entering its core components. Smooth and durable. I have a 2500 paired with a 7'2" medium light rod and a 3500 paired with a 7' medium rod. Both handle slot redfish and trout with ease. The reels are a little heavy, but that's a small sacrifice for the IPX-5 seal. Good drag system. I don't worry about salt spray nor a good freshwater rinse of them after my inshore saltwater fiahing trips. Easy to maintain.

This SSVii 5500 is replacing an old workhorse in my stable. If it is 75% as good as my old one its well worth the money. The new features and waterproofing are a bonus, and this is the smoothest Spinfisher that I have owned. These reels are not known to be the smoothest operating reels. They are saltwater utility machines that never fail. and hold up to continuous exposure and use in a hostile environment. The sealed drag is butter, and the Brass gears superb. Very pleased with this new model.

I go out a couple times a year on long range trips for large tuna (60lb-200lb+). Normally an assortment of casting reels is the order of the day and serves well. Last trip one of the fellow anglers was fly lining (gently casting a live sardine and leaving the bail open and letting it run) with a spinning reel. He was out casting everyone and getting his sardine out farther away from the boat than the majority of fellow fisherman and getting hit more often. Decided to try out a spinning reel. My past experience with spinning reels was for bass and trout fishing. Fish under 5 lbs and 8 lb monofilament. First I had to find a spinning reel up to the task of handling 100+ pound tuna. Penn's SpinFisher was a great find. Well made reel with the ability to change reel handles to either side (I cast with my left hand and reel with my right hand). Spool accommodated over 400 ft of 100lb spectra to which I attached a 130 lb leader. Great price point made greater by the sale I was fortunate to catch. Only minor area to improve is that you have to manually close the bail, it does not close upon turing the handle after casing. I can't commend on casting as I improperly matched too small a rod (only 7 ft and rated 40-80 lb). Because of the weight of the reel it was difficult cast properly a such a small rod. Overall very pleased and would recommend this reel but only with a longer and beefier rod.

I've had my reel for a little bit of time now and have slammed some really nice cod, haddock, striper, dogfish, pollock and several more species. Most of my fishing with it has been off of a Penn slammer 9.5ft rod and will be going on my Penn Slammer surf rod permanently. It casts veryyy welleven on the shorter rod. Casts heavier chunk baits, bottom rigs with 12-14oz weights and even lighter lures exceptionally well.
