  • Smooth reel, satisfying drag, quality build.
Style: Ssvi - Old Model Size: 3500
Feels like a Penn Slammer at a better price point. I have 3 of these from 3500-6500 in both the liveliner and standard configuration. They all function great so far. I hadn’t bought Penn products in years because it felt like most of there products didn’t meet the quality standard that Penn was known for in the past. These justify the gold bling and higher price tag over something like a kastking or piscifun with a better feeling product. Only time will tell if they hold up to the saltwater like the old Penn reels did. Would have had 4 of these, but I had to return one I bought used from Amazon warehouse because it came without the bearing cap opposite the handle. Would still buy again, and plan to buy another one to replace the one I had to return. ... show more

  • Surf Fishing Dream Cast
Style: Ssvi Long Cast - Old Model Size: 6500
The new hardened, CNC'd, Brass Maingear is an awesome upgrade to the VII 5500 LC. I have two of them spooled up with 300 yds 30# power pro (the two rods in holders in the middle in the picture). The long cast gets me 30 to 50 more casting yards because of its design and line lay. People on the beach are just awed at the distances you can reach. I have mine paired with OTB 12' 2-4oz perfect Pompano setups. They cast further, reel in smoother, and are IPX5 sealed. I know guys that have Spinfisher SS's from I think the 70's that are still ripping lips in the surf. These are workhorses with some luxury features. I will only use Penn SPinfishers, Slammers, or Authorities in the salt and surf. No other reels stand up to Penns for the price and longevity. ... show more

  • What a nice spinning reel
Style: Svii - New Model Size: 2500
I have had one Penn SS reel long time ago and was very impressed with it. After I left it in Australia I started using Shimano and Daiwa reels. Up to that point I had original black and gold Okuma Salina, what a great reel, just like Penn SS. Now, some Shimano reels I have are great (like Stradic, I own both FK and FL models), but some other models are really disappointing (Ultegra, Nasci , Miravel), and I don’t understand the hype. Same goes for Daiwa, had Tatula, Caldia, Luvias, Procyon, (all LT reels) are all flimsy, meaning, there’s plenty of handle slop, and rotor side to side movement, like, it just doesn’t inspire confidence that they could survive landing many big fish. That doesn’t look like to be the case with this Penn Spinfisher vii and Penn Battle iii DX I have. And both of these are rated to have less drag power than Daiwa and Shimano reels in same size, but the body is strong and tolerances are way better, and therefore they are more pleasant to use. Plus these reels have new machined brass main gear that only gets smoother over time as the surfaces of gear teeth polish from use. Obviously these reels are heavier because the body is aluminum unlike most other brand reels on the market today, but they are meant for heavier duty use. Great reel! ... show more

  • Best spinning reels I own!
Style: Ssvi - Old Model Size: 7500
I an very impressed by the quality of the reel. You can just tell its well made. It's cast far and reels fast and smooth. I will buy more in different sizes. But the 7500 fit perfectly on my 7'6" heavy rods. Can't wait to hook into a big Rockfish or grouper.

  • Great reel!
Style: Ssvi - Old Model Size: 4500
This is my 4th spin fisher reel. The other 3 are performing great after 6 years. I just wanted to add a 4th so my wife could have her own to cast a spoon and walk the surf.

  • Big reel for big fish
Style: Ssvi - Old Model Size: 9500
I go out a couple times a year on long range trips for large tuna (60lb-200lb+). Normally an assortment of casting reels is the order of the day and serves well. Last trip one of the fellow anglers was fly lining (gently casting a live sardine and leaving the bail open and letting it run) with a spinning reel. He was out casting everyone and getting his sardine out farther away from the boat than the majority of fellow fisherman and getting hit more often. Decided to try out a spinning reel. My past experience with spinning reels was for bass and trout fishing. Fish under 5 lbs and 8 lb monofilament. First I had to find a spinning reel up to the task of handling 100+ pound tuna. Penn's SpinFisher was a great find. Well made reel with the ability to change reel handles to either side (I cast with my left hand and reel with my right hand). Spool accommodated over 400 ft of 100lb spectra to which I attached a 130 lb leader. Great price point made greater by the sale I was fortunate to catch. Only minor area to improve is that you have to manually close the bail, it does not close upon turing the handle after casing. I can't commend on casting as I improperly matched too small a rod (only 7 ft and rated 40-80 lb). Because of the weight of the reel it was difficult cast properly a such a small rod. Overall very pleased and would recommend this reel but only with a longer and beefier rod. ... show more

  • Great product
Style: Ssvi - Old Model Size: 7500
Very strong drag , smooth operation good amount of line. Do not like Manuel bail return slows down the casting and return when intense fishing pressure is on!

  • I've been buying Penn for years
Style: Ssvi - Old Model Size: 3500
Penn reels are all I use in the Northeast US. They are durable & fully sealed for surf fishing but also light and smooth enough that I can slap it on a shorter rod and use it for boat fishing. They are a great value for the money and would highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a do-it-all fishing reel. ... show more
