I am reelly impressed with this reel. It has shielded bearings in water contact locations. After I removed the spool and greased the center shaft, it is really smooth. If you remove the handle, spool, and line roller, then you can give them a good coat of water proof grease to keep water out. It certainly gives my old Penn Spinfisher reels a run for their money. I am going to use this for my squid rig. It is big enough to jig for walleye etc. too, so multi purpose. Spooled it up with 200 yards of 8# Seaguar Red Label, although the spool is set up for braid. The line lays nice and flat. Would I use this reel series for large fish? Probably not. The place for reels like this is smaller fish/squid etc or to give to your kids. It seems a little flexy for a big tug of war. YMMV. Great at this price point! ... show more

I put this Pursuit IV 3000 reel on a Penn Battalion II Medium 7' rod and it makes a nice inshore combo. The balance is perfect if I put it between my last two fingers. The knob is nice and the reel functions fine so far. I think it's the best deal out there for a salt capable reel with sealed bearings. Beware the capacity ratings, though if you are trying to determine backing line length by math. Basing it on each of the capacity ratings for various weight lines returns widely varying results. I ended up putting the top shot on first, then the backer and unspooling and respooling with the braid on top. FYI, it lists 15 lb braid capacity at 250 yards but I only fit 150 yards plus ~22 yards of 15 lb mono backer. There's no way it would have held 250 yards of 15 lb braid. Not a big problem but partly because of this I'm glad I went with the 3000 instead of the 2500. ... show more

It’s a solid reel. What else can I really say? Realistically, it’s the heaviest part of my setup; matched with a MH 7’ carbon fiber rod, it’s easy to fish some tricky locations with. I’ve hit creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakesides- it had held up well, and It has worked for every catch. I probably won’t ever use it in the ocean due to the small size, although I understand some people use larger reels from Penn for such applications. I figure a little over-engineering for saltwater will make it last well with fresh water. Overall- no real complaints, because I wasn’t expecting it to be dipped in gold and vajazzled. Bought this reel to put on a rod for a surf fishing trip. It did great and held up to the salt and sand while on the beach. Cleaned it up when I got home and its good as new! Penn is a great product!
